valentineDante Exum has outplayed Trey Burke for the 5th straight game.
Burke has been very average, and obviously has a lot of time to improve as the Jazz are in no hurry nor expecting to be a playoff team.
However Exum has been excellent, and must be in consideration for the starting job. He is shooting better, turning it over less often and the team is playing better as a team when he is on the floor.
I would not be surprised to see Exum earn the starting spot within a week if this continues.
Thoughts?

butidonthavemoneyExum has been playing better than Burke has, but he’s still not in great shape. He appears to get winded quickly during his time on the floor, spending most breaks in play breathing heavily and grabbing his jersey.
Besides, Burke is capable of more than what we’ve seen from him so far this season. He needs to time play out of his slump, if only to ensure his trade value doesn’t drop too much.
Utah only needs to make this adjustment if they believe they are competing for a playoff spot this season. Otherwise, it’s in everybody’s best interests to let Exum come along at his own pace. He has a lot of room to grow, and playing in 8-12 minute stints off the bench is the best way for him to do so right now, in my opinion.

benny15Participanti think you said it spot on in regards to exum’s conditioning. if people think he will get better as the season goes on, im actually expecting his production and abilities to drop. not that i think he’ll get worse, more that he will hit the rookie wall sooner than most. the talent is there and it can easily be seen, but his biggest hurdle right now is physical. he looks like a boy in a man’s league and doesnt look like he’ll finish this year solid after the NBA’s usual ground and pound.
i wish him the best and hope i get proven wrong. but im expecting him to have a better sophomore season than a rookie one, and maybe even have that bust out season his 3rd year in the league. it could be that he’s still getting used to the mountain air of utah, but i see it more of a high school kid getting minutes on the most high paced basketball league in the planet. when his body catches up to his talent, he’ll be a player to watch out for.

Ebown5ParticipantI was a big Exum fan going into the draft, but didn’t expect him to be so good so quickly. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was named the starter some time this season, but I would keep doing exactly what they are doing with him right now for a while.
He is getting floor time, and staying in control. Once he establishes himself as a consistent 20 minutes per game player for a few months then I would think about giving him more.

CU.LIONSParticipantWell simply put Exum does have the higher ceiling, I would expect at some point Exum takes over long term. I think any Utah fan would expect and hope this happens at some point this season.

bloodshyParticipantRight now Dante is getting 20+ minutes per game, which is what he can handle physically. Burke is getting a few minutes more, but the gap is small. Dante has been the more efficient player, but he’s also had a few more minutes vs backups.
There’s no reason to give up on Trey’s development. He was a first round pick one year ago and, though he’s been inefficient at times, he’ll improve. Since the Jazz are not a playoff team, the minutes should be ALL about development. As a Jazz fan I’d like to see the minutes numbers stay about the same as they are now and watch both players’ development. Obviously, we hope Exum is the future, but for now we should focus on developing both.

Captain LParticipantI love seeing Exum improve and show some of his potential, I like the fact he seems to be focusing on defense the most, most rookies struggle much more on the defensive end than on the offensive end but Exum is doing quite well defensively . He shows glimpses of his offensive potential and the more he plays the more comfortable he seems to get. I hope he can earn his way into the starting lineup by the allstar break, conditioning and strength do seem to be a problem and those things will take time and hard work to fix. He is showing more than I thought he would at this point in the season and that is a good sign.

FullCourtPressParticipantExum has looked better than I expected so early on, but he is still a ways from being the starting point guard. I’m a huge fan of his and I think he will be great player in this league and will eventually beat out Burke for the job. But so far he needs work on his ball handling and needs more confidence attacking the defence, because that is his main strength. He’s a super quick learner with a high iq who is only going to get better. I think keep him coming off the bench this season to let him grow at his on pace and re-evaluate next season. Also Exum holding his jersey is his trademark lol, he’s been doing that as long as I’ve been watching him since he was 16.

r377ParticipantTrey Burke is struggling with his shot at the moment but I still think he will turn out to be a good pro.
Exum looks like he has potential, he has good court awareness and bball IQ.

r377ParticipantLooks like Burke is getting it together scoring 20pts on 8/12 fg and 18pts on 8/14 fg last two games…
