Yep. Wroten is better at every aspect of the game, yet for some weird stigma, some people still think Wroten is better suited as a combo guard off the bench

It’s because he plays like a chicken with its head cut off.  Wroten is absolutely a combo guard.  He has skills, but he’s not in the same stratosphere as MCW when it comes to the little things that go into being a PG.

Wroten’s gotten off to a hot start in terms of scoring, so we’ll see if he can keep it up, but before this year began, I would have said MCW has the edge as a passer, defender, and (somehow) shooter (but obviously both have generally been terrible as shooters).  Wroten is a better finisher though IMO.

Although Wroten appears to be too erratic with his style of play, I don’t think he gets the credit that he deserves for his vision in facilitating the ball.

Don’t get me wrong… he does have great vision and passing abilities.  He just has no clue how to harness it at all.  He can make all the passes you need to be able to make as a PG and then some, but he doesn’t know how to handle the intricacies that go into being a PG at all, whereas that’s something that MCW has IMO.

Can you please go more in depth for me with all the facets of the skill to pass. I’m very aware that there are levels to the skill, but could you break it down.

MCW the passer vs Tony Wroten the passer

I would say Wroten is probably more skilled or at least equally skilled in terms of actual passing ability.  But he doesn’t know how to manage a game at all.  He’s kind of like Brandon Knight in the sense that he’s seemingly always trying to go 100 MPH on the court.  He’s pretty much always in attack mode, which has its value, but at the same time, there are times throughout games where you have to slow things down and try to calm everyone down, get a good shot, take some time off the clock, etc.  The 76ers as a team don’t have all that much experience with slowing things down in late game scenarios simply because they generally aren’t in games by the end lol, but there’s still times throughout every game that you want your PG to be able to slow things down and try to set things up to get a good shot.

Wroten doesn’t really run a team offense.  He doesn’t really let the game come to him.  He’s just always attacking and trying to create plays for himself or his teammates.  That’s why I think he can be a tremendous spark plug off the bench.

But to be a full-time PG, you need to be able to play the role of floor general sometimes.  MCW showed a knack for that at Syracuse and did it at times for Philly last year.  He can get out of control sometimes too, but he also generally has done a pretty good job of remaining calm and being able to initiate an actual team offense.  That’s not to say that he’s ALWAYS in control or that he doesn’t take bad shots, because he definitely does from time to time.  But I think MCW has more of a PG’s presence on the floor, especially as a rookie last year, whereas Wroten, IMO, is just very good at attacking the defense and making things happen.

I see what you mean. In a sense, Wroten has many similarities to the early develemental stages of John Wall. I agree. Flash and flare is what Tony needs to excel in this league because there aren’t that many high-energy skill guys around that can bring you back into the game from a 6th Man spot. On the plus side of things he can start full-time as well if given the opportunity. More so, Jamal Crawford and J.R. Smith fit the mold of what I am expressing although Crawford can run the 1 very effectively and not Smith.

All in all, great observation on your part.

I understand your point about MCW currently being the better playmaker but Wroten’s only 21, 2 years years than MCW, don’t you think he can learn to be a better setup man? Also what do you think about Wroten at SG?

I think he can improve, but I think he’ll eventually settle in as a playmaking SG (kinda like Harden back when he was in OKC, but not as gifted a scorer), but who knows?  Maybe everything will click for him someday and he’ll develop those PG intangibles.
