This forum is created to have people jump in to name your favorite long shots to make the NBA and not just make the NBA but be a major contributor.

    My example is Terry Porter.

Played at Division III University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point (BTW-same league as UW-Whitewater- who won national titles in men’s Football, Basketball and Baseball last year).  Was selected in the 1st round (24th overall) in 1985.  Played for 17 years in the association (made the playoffs in 16 of those seasons) and spent the majority of them with the Trailblazers.

Over his career averaged 12.2 PPG with a stretch from 1988-93 where he was over 17 PPG.  Shot 46.3% from the field and 39% from deep over his career.  84% from the line (actually expected a little better) and averaged 5.6 APG while averaging between 8-10 APG for the season between 1987-91.

Played for Dick Bennett while at Stevens Point (Dick’s son is Tony at UVA) and Dick coached at UWGB, Washington State and Wisconsin.  The reason I point out Dick Bennett is that I was at an event where Dick talked about recruiting Terry.  Dick was in Milwaukee watching a high school game and actually scouting a different kid.  Dick was with his wife in the stands and Dick asked his wife what she thought about the player.  Her response was (and paraphrasing), you are looking at the wrong guy.  Go get that Terry Porter kid.

    Cheers to you Terry Porter.

Jack Sikma did the same thing. He went from a D III title at Illinois Weselyan to the Seattle Sonics.

Micah Littlejohn 6’6 SG Freshmen at Tulsa. I’ve been meaning to post a forum about him for a while now.Can Straight up score in many different ways. Has handles, can shoot, and can dunk. Can jump out of the gym and reminds me of Terrence Ross. He’s a great scorer, but sometimes his focus is only on scoring. Has court vision but only uses it when he looks to pass. Also good rebounder but once again only rebounds when he wants to.

Here’s a video of him dunking on someone, can’t embed videos the school IPad so here it the link

    http://youtu.be/vlKNnrd8dAl

And here is another one a couple years ago as a Sophomore in highschool

    http://youtu.be/RA0Kl-raf90

His talent is for sure, but will only go as far as his work ethic will take him.

Although he plays for Providence (Big East) I feel as though he is going widely unnoticed as far as NBA radar is concerned. NBA family pedigree as he is the brother of Tobias. He’s a 6’9 SF who plays more on the outside than his brother. 84% free throw shooting last season so I expect his shooting numbers to improve (shot 32% for 3pt land last season). He can rebound a bit and he has the size and developing skill to make an impact in the league.

Ben Wallace and Charles Oakley came from Division II Virginia Union. The much loved Manute Bol played at Bridgeport. Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman were from the NAIA.

Here is a pretty cool article on the question..

Who knows what the future holds for this guy, but I believe he makes someone’s roster one day.
