I know this has been discussed already, but after the FIBA tourney, it looks like Pau is healthy and ready to be a difference maker this year.

The East is going to be a very exciting two team race this year, unlikely the faux rivalry of Heat-Pacers. If everyone stays healthy I’ve got the Cavs winning the East in 7 over the bulls, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Chicago wins 65+ and runs away with the regular season. They just have so much talent 1-5.

    Comparison:

PG- Rose v Irving. I give Rose the clear edge here if he can stay healthy. Both are explosive on offense, but DRose can really D up and to me that is the difference. Irving will be getting a lot of open 3 looks though.

SG- Butler vs Waiters. Both players have different skill sets, but overall I’m going to call it a push. I don’t think many games will be won and lost in this individual matchup. Waiters will get more buckets and Butler should make more hustle plays and defend and rebound better.

SF- Gibson vs Lebron. Moving on…

PF- Pau vs. Love. Klove gets the slight edge here, with the 3 point shooting and rebounding. But I think Pau will get his share of buckets in this matchup while shooting over 50%. Pau has all the intangibles of a champion, but Love is just too young and quick for him at this point in their careers.

C- Varejao vs Noah- Noah should dominate this matchup, while also trying to slow down Lebron and company from scoring too many layups and dunks in the restricted area.

Bench- I think the Bulls have a significant edge here with Dougie buckets, Dunleavy, Brewer, Mirotic and others. Best bench in the league IMO.

Coaching- Thibs is a great defensive coach, but will he finally not play his starters 40+ min a night now that he has a bench? Davit Blatt is unproven at the NBA level, but I really don’t see Thibs outcoaching him in the X’s and O’s. Lebron being a coach on the court also even things out. This is a push to me as well.

Overall, this should be extremely close. In the end I think it will come down to Rose vs Lebron. Hopefully everyone can stay healthy and we can see a good battle this year. Who you got?

I think Thibobeau is going to have a good challenge for how he plays his team against the Cavs and I think he’ll try a bunch of different combinations. The 3 big rotation you mentioned above is interesting but I can’t see it being used for long stretches of time. I think that Jimmy Butler will be used as the primary defender on James and therefore Thibodeau’s decision will be who to play at the other wing. Offensively, he could play Jimmy at SG and Marion at SF (for more defense) with two bigs. Mcbuckets Hinrich and Brewer Will all get play too and anyone of them who establishes any sort of two way consistency should get a lot of minutes.

In the past, Thibodeau has countered small ball by staying big and I tihnk thats what he will do against the Cavs. I think that Gibson can get away with guarding Lebron (with help) for stretches (much like Diaw did in the past 2 finals).

There’s so much thats going to go into this matchup and I can’t wait to see the chess match that develops between these two coaches. Hopefully everyone stays healthy so we can get an epic ECF.

Also there’s no way that Bulls will start Gibson, Gasol, and Noah. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dunleavy start early on with McDermott getting more minutes as the season progresses and eventually getting the starting gig. Tony Snell is also in the mix too. This Bulls team is stacked and has about as much potential as any team in the league. If they stay healthy, they really don’t have much of a weakness.

You said Heat in the title but referred to the Cavs in the post.
Until the Cavaliers get a rim protector that can stay healthy for the whole season I’ll go with the Bulls because of Thibs defensive schemes. I would love to see Ray Allen on the Bulls.

Just like Bobcats and Hornets, plenty of people are going to confuse Heat and Cavs this season.  Everyone got used to Team LeBron being in Florida, it will take some time, and games, for fans to get used to him being a Cav again.

And I agree with Dunleavy starting for the bulls over Gibson, the bulls will need his floor spacing, especially if the 3ball isn’t falling for Rose. I expect McDermott to be the starter by the end of the season, I think he is athletic enough to defend the 3 position and not get exposed out there, especially with Noah backing him up in the paint.

Hopefully Rose figures out that his job will be to get the rest of the guys going early instead of going into Video Game Allen Iverson Mode.  Then he can be the closer at the end of the game by getting to the basket.

D Rose is the guy, it’s his team, but he doesn’t have to go for 30 every night.

He should still play to his strengths and use his size and athleticism, but look to get other guys going first, THEN try to close games at the end.  In the really, really big games then he should be more aggressive on offfense.  This is basically what he did at the University of Memphis and it worked very well.

In a Cavs-Bulls playoff series, if Kyrie Irving is gunning for stats, and Rose is managing the game and playing within himself and the system, then I really like the Bulls’ chances.

to be to be honest and off-topic, im actually interested to get into a disucssion with the teams in the title. i believe that not only chicago, but miami as well can very well represent the east in the NBA finals over media-darling Cavs. id love to have these two team meet each other in the second round of the play-offs. just look at these match-ups:

Wade vs Rose. has always been a great game when they have played each other. both chiacago based guards love going at it and challenging each other. although it would be better if they were both in their physical peak, ill take it that both come with questions marks. wade has age against him, but rose hasnt been fully healthy, physically or mentaly in 2 years. anyway you put it, these two would be a great match-up on both ends of the court.

Bosh vs Noah. one of the more interesting match-ups to me in the whole league. you have both players being outstanding on one end of the court while being unspectacular but solid on the other. it makes it even better that their strengths are opposing so when bosh’s best will be matched-up with noah’s and vice versa. one could argue and i might agree that noah’s d is supperior to bosh’s offensive capabilities, but it can also be argued that the same thing applies when noah has the ball in his hands.

Deng vs Butler. luol is a classic bull, would love for him to return and retire as one in the future, gets to match-up with the guy who replaced him and took his role in the team. jimmy has the youth and explosiveness on his side, but id still give the advantage to the savy vet. deng has been one of the most consistent players in the NBA through out his career, thats what makes his time with kyrie more puzzling. i fully expect him to have a good season this year playing the role of a secondary or third option on offense while holding down the team’s perimeter defense.

Chalmers vs Hinrich. Rock Chalk Jayhawk. these two former KU alums essentially have the same role. they help facilitate the offense by being the secondary ball handler in the back-court, space the floor by being an outside threat, and theyll primarilly guard the opposing team’s back-court star, wade and rose to save their own stars from potential foul trouble. although one could start while the other will come off the bench, i fully expect both to get about the same amount of minutes.

Granger vs McDermott. if danny is healthy, not even to his former physical traits, just healthy enough to play, he can end up being the veteran version of mcbuckets. sure doug had much better athletics numbers in the combine than what we thought, but im pretty much sure he will still play simillarly to what he did in college. a lot of off-ball movement, catch and shoot opportunities, and one or two dribble then pull-up. its essentially how granger used to score. he was never the ball handling wizzard who would slash his way to the cup. he had an underated post game and a solid jumper. its actually what i expect from dougie in his career.

now dont get me wrong, i fully expect chicago to have the advantage on paper. mcroberts is a poor man’s poor man version of pau gasol. im a fan of his game and think what he does goes beyond what is seen on the box score. however, his greatest strength, court vision and passing, is not something pau lacks, while gasol is supperior in every other aspect of the game. then theres taj gibson who is better than birdman in much of the same sense pau is to josh. i also believe that aaron brooks is at the very least on par with norris cole or shabazz napier. however, teams arent simply a sum of their players, which will make this match-up very interesting and one i hope to see in the play-offs.
