It’s a slow time in the basketball world, but the FIBA World Cup gives us a look at the 2014 International Man of Mystery against competition much better than the likes of those rookies and journeymen that suited up in Vegas last month.

During the first two FIBA games Utah rookie, Dante Exum, has had a slightly underwhelming impact early in the tournament. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though. He’s very much a player drafted for his upside, and at #5 I thought he was well worth the risk.

    Through Australia’s first two games…

    12 mpg – 2 ppg 1 rpg 2 apg .2 spg 1 TO pg – 25 % FG 0% 3PT 0% FT

Has anyone caught either of Australia’s games? Do you think he’s still a legit threat to de-throne Trey Burke as Utah’s starter? What kind of impact do you see Exum having as a rookie?

He is going to have to spend the whole year getting his body in shape. Weight wise he is fine but has no strength at all. He has great instincts but he is very behind physically. If he averaged 6 points a game this year, I’d be surprised. Trading down to get TJ Warren would have been a better idea.

He will spend the whole season in the d league he can not play the two he can’t shoot and is not physical enough he is a point and Burke is lightyears ahead of him. In a couple years he could be a player but I think he’ll be best case scenario an Antonio Daniels. The reason being is even tough rookies struggle in summer league most of the time they have on attribute that shines allowing you to see future dominance. In his case he is quick but he doesn’t have the rose Westbrook leaping ability and with out a killer midrange game he’s destined to be a strong defensive offensive role player.

No, he won’t. Utah didn’t draft him at 5 so they could drop him to D league. They know he’s a bit of a project but I believe they want to keep him around so he can develop chemistry with the rest of the playing group.

Many people think he’s a SG because of his siz,e but I’m 100% convinced Exum is a true point guard who will thrive in putting up a good amount of assists from the start.

I caught the second game and he looked tentative, particularly with his shot. It seems like he now knows the world is watching and it’s affecting his game. His shot still needs work – I think like John Wall his jumper will be a work in progress for many years. What he does have is great athleticism and excellent court vision. He was using his hesitation dribble to drive the lane and find open men. He could have taken a shot while he was there as he had a size advantage but I think he was consciously trying to set others up when his shot wasn’t falling. One stretch he had a great behind the back pass to Bairstow for an assist, then a few plays later drove the lane and dished round the corner behind his defender to Jawai for a big dunk. You can see the potential but he just needs to relax a bit with his offence and it will come. Defensively he was pesky but obviously still needs work on that end too. I think by the end of the year he will have shown a lot of improvement but will start VERY slowly.

What do you guys make of his ball-handling? It actually seems kinda loose when you watch, yet he seems to be able to create off the drive and get into the paint easily.

His best ability at this stage is his passing.

Conditioning & shooting are the biggest areas of improvement.

As an Aussie I’ve watched all out games and he has looked fine. He suffered a minor ankle sprain against Finland so he’s not being played. It’s only an exhibition tournament , the coaching staff not want to risk him

International play is a tough predictor. I mean look at Rose falling on his face and Faried looking like a top 3 player.

I’d say Exum will have a rough first year but blow by Burke shortly after. 6’6", 6’10" wingspan, lightning first step….can’t teach that.

As an Aussie myself I’ve been following all of Australia’s games. Here’s my breakdown of what I see in Exum:
    – Has the potential to be an above average defender from day 1
    – Looks smooth and comfortable with the ball in his hands
    – Rushes plays as a PG, spaces well as the off guard
    – Occasionally makes the wrong decisions especially leaving his feet before releasing a pass
    – Plays well off the ball especially when he catches in a triple threat position, his first step is lightning quick
    – Does well on driving kick outs and assessing options whilst slashing
    – Gets into good rebounding positions, needs to develop more strength but

    Summary:
Exum can be a good defender from day go in the NBA he knows how to use his length and has great footwork; however he lacks a lot of offensive prowess beyond driving shots and layups, he needs to improve his jumpshot badly. This hurts his potential in the NBA as defenders will constantly go under screens until he proves he can shoot. With the flex offense that Utah runs don’t expect him to be a scoring threat outside of the lane but he should fit in well with his active feet on defense and good floor spacing.

As a Jazz fan I’ve been worried about Exum and how he is playing, I continue to have hope and look for the good but it is hard to see it, I agree that he is a point guard and not a 2, he does pass well but to me his handle is weak / shaky. His shooting is a work in progress , the little I have seen him play (summer league games) he stands around when he plays the 2 and he defers to the point guard if he is not the main point. He is young and I have hope he can and will become a very good player but we will have to be patient. I love how he see the floor and looks to pass and give his teammates good shots. I hope his is determined to work hard because that is what he will need to do to become the player many think he can be.  I don’t think he will start to start the season but hopefully by the allstar game he can earn his way into the starting lineup.

Woah, people please settle down. He’s playing in FIBA, not in the NBA, Greek Freak hardly gets any run with the Greek national team. Euro ball is very different from the NBA. European and national teams tend to give minutes to veteren players who the coach has familiarity with. Do you really think Delevedova should be playing ahead of Exum? Please, Exum is going to be fine, summer league is how you should evaluate Exum this early, not in FIBA.

Of course Dellavedova should be playing ahead of Exum (now). This is a short tournament, not a franchise run and experience counts.

So you would play Dellevedova over Exum if you were coaching?

i would. dellevedova provides my starting unit with more stability and direction, something i would be demanding from my starting point guard. dante exum isnt at his level yet when it comes to playing against this kind of competition and controlling the tempo of the game. mathew’s also a better outside shooter and passes the ball quicker. sure he’s not as dynamic with the ball in his hands, doesnt have the speed and quick step that great slashers got, but he doesnt need to if their team system doesnt ask that from him.

at the end of the day, its about whats best for the team and i honestly believe that exum coming of the bench would be for the best of the boomers. he offers a change of tempo kind of game if they need it and the boomers could stick with their system. one day in the future, dante could be the starter and mathew his back-up, but we’re not there yet.

its just like in the 2008 olympics with spain. Jose Calderon was starting over Ricky Rubio untill he got injured. you got to go with the more stable vet since the team will be better over-all with him over the young buck who has greater potential, but has yet to surpass your vet’s level of team play.
