You guys might’ve heard it already, but Hasheem Thabeet just got traded to Philly for a 2nd round pick!!! Awesome. A lot of us, maybe all of us have already given up on the kid and labeled him bust. But this is a really big opportunity for him here because finally, he has NO ONE to compete playing time with. Embiid is likely out for the year, so I assume minutes at the 5 goes to him while Nerlens plays the 4.

Over his career he had been stuck in every team’s doghouse over other centers such as Aldridge, Gasol and Perkins. Now, he has absolutely no competition, because well, it’s the Sixers. Hoping for a great year for him.

You are joking right? All the reports have Thabeet being waived once the trade is completed. Undrafted Henry Sims has performed better in his short still in Philadelphia than the number 2 pick Thabeet has in his entire career.

I’m sort of sad to see him go. He wasn’t much of an impact on the court but he was actually pretty active in the Oklahoma community. Everyone knew his name, even though he rarely played. But as far as basketball goes I can’t help but imagine that a 2nd rounder will be an upgrade. Especially if the pick is near the early 2nd round.

An early second round pick could definitely be an upgrade I just doubt the 76ers traded them an early second rounder. In all likelihood it will be a second round pick from some likely playoff team.

The pick is so protected it’ll never be a pick.  He was sent with cash for a trade exception they took back (OKC).  This, was, of course, Presti calling Hinkie and asking for some help clearing a little cap space.

Someone may take a flier on him for height – but he can’t play

According to every source I see, the Sixers plan on waiving Thabeet.

OP, Thabeet didn’t play much because he sucked. Not because of those starting big men you named.

His career may be over. I guess theres a slim chance a team like Boston or even Cavs give him a unguaranteed contract.

Wow 2nd overall pick and he’s out of the league now … then you got a guy like Patty Mills 55th overall and he’s won a ring and carving a place in this league … just goes too show it’s not about what number you get selected

That is common sense. There have been some late second round picks or undrafted players doing good things in the league and there are some of top 5 picks who were busts.

I’d be very happy for the Celtics to take a run at him, he gives the Celtics some form of rim-protection that has otherwise been missing entirely from our roster.

Stevena could be the guy to turn things around for him and make him a rotation big at least.

He actually had a decent run with the Thunder before Adams was drafted, I don’t think he drops out of the NBA just yet.

I don’t get this trade for the 76ers. How does it work out for them?

Ok, you guys are right, he sucks. But I can’t help hoping this guy could turn things around with at least some playing time. I mean, you can’t go wrong by playing a 7’2 center who can block shots with the best of em playing time when the team is tanking anyway. He did average 1.3 blocks in 13 MINS his rookie season.

He should still be picked up even if its just benchwarmer minutes, he can still block shots with his height and you can never have enough depth at the bigs.

Clippers could use him as a 5th big behind Griffin – Jordan, Davis – Hawes

Chicago could use a natural center Gasol – Noah – Gibson / Mirotic

and maybe Cleveland if they’re looking for competition for Haywood

Cavs could use a back up big. If they can’t get Okafor, I’m all for giving this guy a shot if they think he can contribute.

Great 3rd string center option for the Cavs.  HUGE guy with lots of length.  Decent athlete.  He can block shots and protect the paint.

Other than that, I would like to see what the Spurs could do with him.

He’s not great, but he does have something to offer in the right situation. In the 2009/2010 season (the season in which he has appeared in the most games), he averaged almost a double double plus 3.6 bpg per 36. I don’t think he’s lost anything physically since then, so no reason he couldn’t duplicate that production. Having said that, he’s got a ton of work to do and he better hustle his butt off every play if he hopes to stick somewhere. I also agree Boston should give him a shot.

The Grizzlies used to run a mean Zone Defense with him anchoring the middle.

Unfortunately for him, we had one of the worst benches ALL TIME when he was with us.  I mean, Darrell Arthur was basically our sixth man, and this wasn’t even PEAK DA.

Memphis had drafted him with the assumption that Zach Randolph would move on in due course I guess. When you look at who they passed on, hindsight is very cruel.

I’ll admit I was a big Hasheem fan during his college days and thought he could be a good NBA defensive anchor. The only thing he did notable in his NBA career was leading Blocks per minute played in his rookie season.

The trade is basically OKC have paid Philly to waive Thabeet so OKC can get a trade exception and won’t have the salary on their cap. Philly have probably made a bit of cash from it I guess.

They dont need him to do much, just alter shots. They should definately give him a look.
