I know this group of players get a lot of flak and there may never be a franchise player in this group. However, there are still some talented players with lots of upside. Sine potentially could be all stars. So which 2nd year players take the leap and who ends up being the best in this group?

I’m still expecting a pretty good season out of C.J. McCollum whether he starts or not.

    All Sophomore team.

PG: Oladipo – 17ppg, 6apg, Magic to increase wins

SG: Greek Freek – Solid all-around stats on rubbish team

SF: Anthony Bennett – Will breakout in my opinion. Happy to debate

PF – Nerlens (If you’re counting him)

C – Stephen Adams – My pick to have the best career. Just turned 21 and will be a top 3-5 centre in the league. quite soon.

I don’t really see Oladipo playing the point with the Magic picking up Payton in the draft.

    Also

Glen Rice Jr. – Think he’s going to be valuable this year, as a shooter off the bench

Kelly Olynyk – I imagine he’ll probably step into a starting role

Tony Snell – Great sniper off the pine who can stretch the floor

Gorgui Dieng – Confidence expanded greatly as the season wore on

Solomon Hill – Will get thrust into starter’s minutes due to George’s injury

I think Copeland will probably get the nod at SF for Indy. They also brought in Croatian veteran Damjan Rudez ( very solid outside shooter and distributer at 6’10”), who will certainly compete for mintues at the 3 and 4 spots. Hill will get a bump in minutes, but I bet it’s realisticly in the high teens, not the 30+ most starters play.

Tim Hardaway Jr. I think NY should get rid of JR smith and give the minutes to shump and Hardaway . That kid can ball, and truly wants to improve.

I think the players that got over looked last season, because of injuries or what have you, will have a strong chance to come into their own.  Noel, len, porter, mccollum, and shabazz. Overall though I like the potential of the big men in this class. Olynyk is a polished offensive weapon with a high motor and high iq. Adams will be a great 2 way player. Noel will be a terrific defender and looks improved on offense over the summer league. Len will be a question mark. Has tons of potential. Could be great  on both ends. But injuries are always a concern for big men. But I believe if he can find even a little bit of defensive improvement and a team that can cater to his abilities offensively,  I like olynyk chances of make quite a few all star games. After that, oladipo.

If you watched Ben McLemore during Summer League he looked like he had worked a lot on his decision making and shot selection.

He’s still going to be playing a 3rd or 4th option type roll for the Kings, but I’d expect higher shooting numbers, more consistancy, and overall higher production.

I’d expect about 13 ppg 3.5 rpg and a 3 point percentage close to 40%.

One has to think that Mason Plumlee getting the nod to be on Team USA means he should be in the conversation for making a leap. Now he will be somewhat burried on the Nets behind Lopez and KG at the C. And even if Team USA thinks he can play PF, the Nets have better options in Kirilenko and Teletovic (who is incidentally lighting things up at 26 points per game in the FIBA qualifying games this Summer, but then Teletovic always scores in Europe) at the PF spot.  So Plumlee may not get the minutes.

But if he has improved his rebounding and if he gets more respect from the refs due to his Team USA status and if he gets the minutes, he could put up some very high efficiency scoring numbers. I guess that is a lot of ifs. But he should be mentioned here.

Of the guys mentioned above, I like Adams and Hardaway. Adams should be the starting Center on a great OKC team. If he gets 25+ minutes per game he is going to turn some heads.

I totally agree. Not trying to be a jerk, but I think the Nets will be significantly worse than they were last year, and I think Plumlee could really see a lot of minutes, as KG and AK47 probably won’t be playing big minutes, and possibly traded, if the Nets are out of the playoff race by the ASG.

I think Plumlee could be a 13/10 type player next year, and along with TH Jr are will probably go down as two of the biggest steals in the 2013 draft.

Why would the Nets be significantly worse? Do you think the lose of Pierce, Livingston and Blatche is so huge? If the Nets get better health from DWill (and this is likely since the bone spurs removal surgery is something that he should have done to his ankles before) and if Lopez doesn’t break his foot again, the Nets should be about the same.  Pierce is fine at this stage of his career, but he isn’t better than AK or Teletovic as a PF.

The Nets probably need to cut one of their back up guards and grab a back up two guard. Unless they just want to play Jack at the two exclusively and they think that Teagues and Guiterrez can actually play NBA minutes at the point. But besides back up two, the team is very deep.

I thought the Nets last year would be about a 50 win team. And I think the Nets will again be only a bit worse this year at about 45-47. That will easily make the playoffs.

I just wonder how much KG, Deron Williams, AK47 and Joe Johnson have left in the tank. The essentially lost about 30 points per game, and their core scorers are all 30+ and fading… or in Lopez’ case, a craps shoot as to whether he’ll play 10 games or 70.

In a best case scenario where everyone stays healthy, sure, the Nets veteran saavy can get them 41-45 wins, but I just don’t think this is a best case year.

Plumlee is a guy who I think has a bright future and I think BK would be smart to start him and not KG or AK, Tetovic is a solid vet and Karasev is young and has some promise, but I just am not sure increased roles by those three can make up for Pierce’s ability to get a bucket in a pinch, AND make up for the games in which Brookyln’s aging core is on the bench resting a bum knee or just taking the night off.

I also think they drafted well, but I don’t think Markell Brown when he comes back from his hand injury or Cory Jefferson will be capable of playing much more than supplimentary bench roles.

Not to mention the Hornets and Hawks will be better, probably Detroit and New York as well. Maybe I’m glass half empty, but I could see the Nets winning 35 games and getting passed in the East….but I guess in a best case scenario, you’re probably right…IF they get a whole year out of Lopez and their vets stay healthy it’s possible they could be back at the level they were last season, I just have my doubts.

Playing time could be the key, I’ve never known a rookie year have so few players seeing court time near the top of the draft. I know Noel sat out a year due to injuries which also affected Bennett, Len, Porter, McCollum etc.

Bennett should see more minutes at Minny but may well still be stuck behind Thad Young for example and Porter has PP and Martel Webster ahead of him.

I could see Cody Zeller getting a few more minutes and increased production, Kelly Olynyk at Boston could kick on in year two and I’ll throw in Shane Larkin at the Knicks if he sees decent playing time.

The draft had a lot of solid role players and a couple of players who may be more.

Tier 1(Franchise guys): Greek Freak made strides in SL and we could be looking at something special in another year or two

Tier 2 (Multiple All-Star): Nerlens Noel was considered the best player in the class and if not for Giannis still would be. He isn’t the franchise piece, however will be very good player as long as he remains healthy.

Tier 3 (All-Star Role Player): These are the guys that will play well year to year and be key pieces on their team and will have a big year or three giving them a chance at All-Star berth (i.e Paul Millsap).
Victor Oladipo & Steven Adams – Have the best chance to join Noel as a multiple time All-Star.
Mason Plumlee – Team USA will help him hugely, will be very solid.
Anthony Bennett – Still a lot of potential will be a solid player.
Tim Hardaway Jr – Kid looks very good and could move into tjat starting SG spot at any time, I think he will have a great career.
MCW – I was a little reluctant to put him here, but he does have great size and talent. My only concern is when Philly decide to start winning, how he will look out there.

Tier 4 (Role Players): Starters – Porter, Zeller, McCollum, Olynyk, Dieng, Shroeder, Hill
Bench – McLemore, KCP, Burke, Snell, Wolters

    Unknowns – Gobert, Goodwin
