Such a sad story for a guy who made millions in his career… What happened?

TarHeelRavenParticipantMillions of dollars spent on his entourage, cars, jewelry, boats and houses with no investing or planning out for the future is what happened. He also had to pay hundreds of thousands in child support for his 5 kids after his divorce. At the settlement Iverson, said, "Your honor, I don’t even have enough money to buy a cheeseburger." I saw that article too and didn’t want to believe it was real. That one of the most exciting players in NBA history who made all that money and all those endoresement deals was just flat broke. Sad.

Lotto StudParticipant“Though the 76ers legend is currently bankrupt, he does have a $30 million trust with Reebok, which he cannot access until he is 55-years-old.”
Thank the people at Reebok! They are his Savior! If they never implemented this plan, he would have ran through that check as well. I don’t care if he were 54! There is no justification for blowing $154.5 million in salary. Poor decision maker. I respect this man to the utmost, but he brought that upon himself with the “Lavish Life”.
I highly doubt anyone in their right mind would see this man suffer. I’m being real with this one. There has been a many of athletes to hit rock-bottom and never bounce back, but he will never be one. Name holds too much weight. I’m just speaking on the situation of him blowing money throughout his whole career. Not the “present”. There are levels to being broke and Meek Mill said it best! He’s not in that bracket anymore, but he’s not broke.

ConsiderableUpsideParticipantWow, very strange feeling reading this. I’m not surprised Iverson’s life has gotten even worse, but to hear about him begging at a mall is shocking to me. For a proud athlete with such a big name to resort to that as a way to make cash is hard to imagine. A celebrity of his caliber can easily exploit himself and his name for some easy money (in much less demeaning ways than begging). IF this story is indeed true, then there is got to be more to the story. Maybe, god forbid he has developed a serious drug problem in addition to his already documented alcoholism. Or who knows maybe that, and/or something worse, whatever that may be.
im 27 years old. Iverson is one of the players who made me fall in love with the game of basketball. I grew up watching him play and owned as many pairs of his shoes as I possibly could lol. Guys like Iverson, Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, KG were entering their prime just as I was old enough to really start understanding and playing the game competitively and with some ability. So it really is sad to me to see one of my idols in such a bad place. I’m sure I’m not alone on this, Iverson is a beloved figure which makes this even more hard to believe. Just don’t see AI begging like that unless something is going on besides what we already know about. What do you all think about this?

Meditated StatesParticipantI am sure he could get money speaking, autographs, or just showing up to take pictures at a nightclub venue. The deal reebok put in for him is his savior. Every athelete should get one if they can just in case.

doubledribblerParticipantNo need to feel sorry for him. He did it to himself. I could split the amount he made among a decent amount of people and they could stretch that portion out farther than he did. He basically gave money away. $800K+ owed to a jewler…that was just the portion he never paid to a jewler and you claim to have nothing left for your kids. That’s pathetic. Don’t get me wrong. Money isn’t everything, but I have a pretty strong intuition that he hasn’t given his kids much from what I know to be true about him in general.
He needs to thank Reebok, but I wonder if he makes it that long or if he doesn’t have another long line of people he still owes that are going to take some of what is left.

ConsiderableUpsideParticipantI said the situation is sad, that’s not the same thing as feeling sorry for him. He is a man who I admire for his great achievements in his profession. His personality and talent made him a unique player. Come on, how can you not love a 5 foot 10 scoring champ? So of course it’s sad. I don’t think you can deny that. That doesn’t mean I admire what he is outside of basketball or that I think he deserves pity for his financial woes. Not to mention his kids who have been the real victims here. I think sad is the perfect way to describe the whole thing.
I agree, Iverson has made mistakes and is fully responsible for his life issues. That being said, it’s far more complicated than the man just being a deadbeat bum who selfishly blew all his money. It’s a lot harder than you think to manage millions of dollars as a young man from a poor background. Watch "Broke", the Espn 30 for 30 flick if you haven’t already. Gives you a lot of insight into why things like this happen over and over throughout the years. Alcoholism is a crippling disease as it is, add massive sums of money and fame into the mix and you have nothing short of a ticking time bomb.

Lotto StudParticipantArticle below made for a bigger storyline over the last past week.
If she does not know anything about this man, what is the purpose of having a photo with him?
One thing I cannot stand, is for someone to possess pure ignorance of lacking knowledge. Plain and simple she tried to flex. This story is no different than the 2 girls “with” Mario Chalmers, acting like they were poppin’ bottles, when in actuality, he only posed for a photo.
