 He hasn’t signed it yet.  He could be the one that leaked the story to the USA Today.  Maybe his agent wanted to see if that would give him any more leverage.

 If it’s clear that Greg Monroe will leave in next years free agency then I’d be shocked if Detroit didn’t trade him by the deadline.

that being said.. it’s a terrible decision for him.. he’s 24 still and has a chance to make a ton of guarenteed money.. and im betting playing another season with josh smith lowers his value…  Especially on a market that will probably include Lamarcus Aldrige, paul millsap, KG, Brook lopez, al jefferson, roy hibbert, david west, marc gasol and others..

theirs bad blood now they should sign and trade him now to whoever he wants to play for.

I firmly believe a team with caproom should have been signed him to a poison  pill deal like j lins  that’s front heavy and has a team option. no way would the pistons match that.

Monroe is done with the log jam but most importantly  the front office of Detroit. Theirs no reason he wasn’t signed or giving a offer by now.

I like the move by Monroe. Just think if a guy like Eric Gordon had done this, he could have gone to the Suns a year later and been healthy and been a star.

Instead he’s been stuck in New Orleans with an organisation that no longer values him and can’t keep him healthy.

Is in a tough spot here also in egards to his rotations. Do you limit his minutes somewhat knowing that hes probably not a part of your teams future and that your other big contract player plays so much better as a power  forward. Monroe might be motivted as he would be in essentially a contract year but as he doesnt seem like he wants to stay and again isnt part of the future core. To me they would be best advised to trade him before the season if they can and for a decent small forward. Obviously Monroe having to sign off on any trade now limits the teams options a fair bit. Just better to act sooner rather than later as his value isnt going to go up that much based on his unrestricted status.

 Interesting that taking this one year qualifying deal gives him a no trade clause. I’d be interested to know who came in for Greg and what sort of offers he got plus how the change of personnel in Detroit effected Greg’s thinking. Greg does have control of his choices now but he is taking a risk leaving loads of money on the table.

If Detroit had made him an offer lets say $50 million over 4 years and he refused to sign it and says he’ll sign only a qualifying one year offer, do Detroit have to make him this offer or not. Could they leave him in limbo or by a certain date next season would he become an UFA or would he have to wait until next summer as Detroit could not have an indefinite right to match any offers.

My take on it is that Greg was annoyed he wasn’t resigned last summer so has played hard ball. He is risking a lot potentially playing for less than half he’d have got under a new contract next season and leaving loads more on the table. Lets just say SVG plays hardball and sits Monroe initially, I’m sure then his people would really start pushing for a trade when he becomes available for one. The Pistons could still get something for him this way and it could effect Monroe’s price tag next summer if they held him all year.

Realistically I think SVG will use Monroe, likely from the bench if he assumes that Greg will move on and then come around deadline day I bet some contender will be in for Greg as with a $5.4 million odd deal, his trade would be very easy to balance out salarywise.

My other option for Greg’s people would have been to have tried to get Sam Hinkie to give him a one year deal to help fill up 76ers salary cap space at over $10 million a year, at this sort of rate I don’t think that Detroit would have matched or Philly could have tried to pull a small S and T with some of their 2nd round picks for this year. The clear intention is that Monroe plays and puts himself in the shop window whilst Embiid is out and then around deadline day Philly flip him to a team he would likely resign for in return for a salary dump and at least one first rounder. Philly don’t have Monroe’s output all year so it doesn’t effect Operation Tank, Greg gives them a stop gap whilst Embiid is out, they get at least one first round pick in return for their troubles. Greg gets onto a likely team of choice and can get a potential 5 year deal next year. The receiving team get Greg and have his Bird rights – so everyone wins.
