aktripleParticipantI Looked at the Kings roster recently and as i looked at it i was shocked that they didnt choose vonleh in the draft.
I mean they had the 8th pick while they let players like payton, lavine and even to a certain extent payne just slip right past them.
I believe that this wasnt the fault of their gm as when i watched the behind the scenes of the draft for the kings all i heard from vivek ranadive was " I like stauskas" "oh no are they going to take stauskas?" and " they want to trade picks? no i want stauskas"
I mean really the kings already took a very quality player who i think will go off this year in ben mclemore so why choose stauskas when he plays very similarly to mclemore?
If they had known that they were not going to keep thomas (dont even get me started on that)
then wouldnt it have made sense to draft for that position? i mean if they didnt like thomas because he was too much of a scorer and couldnt get the ball to evryone why not someone like Tyler Ennis?
But back to my original point, i think vonleh would have been the perfect pick for this team which is starved for options up front behind boogie. as vonleh could have spaced the floor, allowed DMC more space to operate and could have developed into a very very good young offensive player and could become one of the best young pairings with DMC.
Again let me get your idea because i have heard rumours that the kings could play stauskas at point guard but i dont think thats very likely.
Sso who do you think the kings should have drafted? did they make the right call?

phila9012ParticipantYeah Vonleh would have been a great pick or Elfried Payton. He is a great defender and is good at getting his teammates involved. Either would have fit a need they have had for a few years. The vivek thing to I thought was weird when they showed their draft room. He looked like he wanted to be apart of it when he most likely knows very little about basketball. Mark Cuban at least doesnt try to be a talent evaluator, he supports his front office and does what ever he can to help, like pitching to free agents. Or the Heat owner, he just stays out of it and lets riley handle the personnel decisions. Those are the two types of owners ho are successful. Hopefully vivek doesnt get too involved and wind up having their front office take guys like the maloofs did with fredette a few years ago and if he does, then I feel bad for kings fans because they are going to continue to be disfunctional.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantWe have to give it some time to play out though, Stauskas could be one of the best players in the draft after a few seasons and prove the GM right, maybe Ben Mclemore isn’t as good as Stauskas in the end?
I would not have drafted Nik 8th overall, I would taken Noah Vonleh and never looked back…
I agree that his size and ability to play the stretch Four role in the future would have been perfect alongside Cousins and the GM should be put on high alert IMO, that’s an eye brow raising move to say the least, maybe Nik provides instant shooting sure, but Noah could’ve been a long term gem for the Kings
Even Adrian Payne would have been a great pick up IMO, he would have been a perfect mix of interior defense and outside shooting, I actually think the addition of Payne would have helped DMC in the locker…
We will just have to wait and see how Nik and Noah progress

CU.LIONSParticipantI think the Kings drafted Staukas because of 2 reasons. One, because they felt Staukas is/was the best player available, which I agree, And I believe you always take the BPA regardless of position when drafting. TWO, I also believe that they have/had plans on making a trade (probably McLemore) or one of the many PFs in a trade for a PG. Nothing has happened yet.
I am also not as high on Vonleh as some seem to be. I am not sure he is the best fit alongside ‘Boogie’ Despite being somewhat long, he is not a center at all and wouldn’t be a good side kick in the same lineup or coming off the bench for Cousins.
Time will tell.

Captain LParticipantI like Stauskas, so I don’t have a big problem with Sac. taking him but I do think Vonleh would have been a better pick, I was a little surprised that Vonleh fell as far as he did and I think he will be really good in the league, he is very young but shows a ton of skill for a 6’10 player.

rileymcshea3ParticipantI completely agree with the OP and think Vonleh falling to the kings was a match made in heaven. Big stretch 4 with potential, plus he fits Demarcus Cousins perfectly. I don’t get how you can pass on him, but they did so now it’s time to look at what Stauskas brings to the table.
As of right now I like what the kings are doing building around Rudy Gay and Cousins. Two guys who easily have the talent to be all stars but have just not learned how to take that step of being leaders and playing the game of basketball the right way. By the right way I mean creating for others, (Both guys are talented enough to do so, and need to learn making a extra pass is better then taking a bad shot) , preaching defense, and being more efficient on offense. Basically they need to watch some Spurs film.
Back to the point the Kings best chance of getting back on the right track is taking the risk on Cousins and Gay to be there main guys. To get the best out of them they need to surround them with guys who compliment them. Stauskas is perfect for that, bc gay and cousins are the main scorers and obviously score in the paint. Stauskas is a lights out shooter with potential to be a all around 2 guard. He also plays the game smart and can create for others, something the kings lack. As a Stauskas fan I like the scenario but only time will tell if this is a good pick or not.

MopgrassParticipantI can’t blame the owner. If I was an NBA owner I’d insist that Jimmer Fredette be my starting PG… and we’d never make playoffs.

Jr. ROXASParticipantVonleh is a project. He’s still pretty raw and will take him about 2-3 years to fully develop. And while he is in not ready and is in Mike Malone’s doghouse for the first 2 years, he won’t have much value than Thompson, Landry and Williams. Don’t get me wrong, Vonleh is a player, but he is a project. As of now, he is just as good as those 3 PFs in the kings logjam frontcourt and I didn’t the Kings would have wanted to add another one of those PFs.

NeggedLoveTradeRanterthey want to play a unique style of ball that’s benfits gay and cousins .
planting shooters all around who can bring a little more to the table as well position less basketball . they have a cluster of bigs I think they want a proven big to pair with Cousins .

KayjayParticipantSomething tells me they had their eye on him for awhile. He’s a true undrafted gem with shot blocking ability which as largely showcased during Summer League. Kings must have just chosen the cheaper gamble rather than the more expensive one at a position that already had a log jam at. I wanted the Kings to take Vonleh as well, but I also like Eric Moreland. So we’ll see what happens.

toady_buddhaParticipantThey could always look at the league’s favorite repository for unproven players, the Sixers. Maybe trade McLemore, Derrick Williams, Jason Thompson and picks for Thad Young, Jason Richardson and Henry Sims. Sac get a decent backup to Cousins (cheap and expiring, too), the epitome of a stretch four and great team guy too (that also doesn’t need alot of touches) and veteran SG player-coach type to coach up Stauskas (oh and an expiring, too). Phi takes essentially a flyer on McLemore and Williams (expiring), Thompson gives them a decent backup PF/C, and additional assets (spelled picks). Seems to work for everyone.

burgessfourParticipantIf I’m the sixers I would do that deal. Not saying it’s a bad trade for Sac., but definitely worth it for the sixers.
