Shooting guard was team’s top returning scorer
By Michael Hunt of the Journal Sentinel July 30, 2014 6:21 p.m.Guard Todd Mayo, who would have been a senior this season, has left the Marquette basketball team to begin a professional career, presumably in Europe.
Mayo’s departure leaves a depth-shy team in a bind. The Golden Eagles had 11 scholarship players, two under the NCAA limit, before Mayo left.
“We wish Todd nothing but the best and appreciate his contributions to the program, not only since I arrived at Marquette, but during his entire career,” coach Steve Wojciechowski said in a statement. “I completely understand his desire to continue his career at the professional level and support his decision.”
Mayo was in and out of trouble with former coach Buzz Williams. Mayo was sent home to West Virginia after his freshman year and told to think about whether he still wanted to be part of the team. He was declared academically ineligible the first semester of his sophomore season.
Marquette said in the statement that he left the school in good academic standing.
As a reserve last season, Mayo averaged 11.3 points and 2.7 rebounds.

Lotto StudParticipantI really didn’t expect much from Todd on the collegiate level, because he flew under the radar his whole HS career. From time to time, he would show great flashes of the aggressive scorer his brother O.J. is by attacking the rim. Other than attacking the basket, he really did not excel in any other areas on the court. It would have been nice to see him develop some type of PG skill, but he is a scorer, and his mind was set on scoring even though he would make a few nice passes here and there.
I hope all goes well with him on his journey across the water to make a decent living.

TheTruth86ParticipantListed at 6’3/195 he is best suited for 2 guard in Europe. With his athleticism and scoring instincts it should be easy for him to find a team in Europe, signing for 150-200k per year.

HitsterParticipantRegarding an occurance like this what are the rules about an NBA team trying to sign a player in such an instance, he is still draft eligible so would he have to wait until 2015 draft to be picked up by an NBA team. If he was then undrafted he’d be free to join whatever rosters for try outs etc.
My point would be lets say a guy like Caris LeVert who will be a Jnr this coming season had some bust up with his University and walked out on them this summer. I’d guess he’d not be free to join any NBA team’s roster immediately as this would make it possible for any player to go to virtually any team they want.

HitsterParticipantMy point would be a top prospect doesn’t declare after their freshman year, waits to post draft and drops out of college and signs with the defending champions or a big market team. There must be a rule on this as all players would be doing it otherwise and it would defeat the whole US sport ethos of the draft being the great leveller.

Robb_CParticipantTodd Mayo didn’t leave… he was most likely pushed out by his teammates and the new coach, this guy is the what defines a team cancer…he routinely use to steal from his teammates among other things thats not worth even mentioning..

Nevada233ParticipantPlayers shoes and other items often ended up missing and Todd was usually the culprit.
He was often late to practices and clashed with coaches. His chances of making it in the NBA are slim to none…. Closer to none

The8thDeadlySinParticipantTodd Mayo, brother of OJ Mayo, was stealing shoes? Doubtful. Im sure he is flush with cash and at the very least, has enough shoes.
However, i do see him being pushed out. New coach in town that is likley looking to make him impact felt on the team right away.

Nevada233 is clearly someone that is close to the program as well for the sole fact that he knows what I know and I would like to keep it at that… Im giving you the reason why he left the program.. the fact is Marquette had him leave a bit ago Marquette just waited to publish it to the media.
