The Scare Crow RisesParticipantThey are all still playing but these guys were special players before suffering injuries and becoming shells of their former selves, I’d throw Caron Butler and Danny Granger into that category

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI wouoldn’t really say injuries “killed” Sabonis’s career the guy played basketball at a high level for a long time. Unfortunately his prime was spent in Europe. Yes he suffered through a few unfortunate injuries but they didn’t completely derail his career. If you count Sabonis then perhaps guys like Alonzo Mourning and Brad Daugherty should be on there too.
Larry Johnson and Manning should def be on there too and also an often overlooked player in Jeff Ruland.
Gotta admit I’m kind of shocked that nobody has mentioned Bill Walton yet

felixthecatParticipantSabonis career was delayed by POLITICS!!!!! We didn’t get to see him rival a David Robinson when he was young and could run and jump like a deer. When he came he was already ground bound. Still could shoot and pass, but not with the same verve as when he was younger.
How about both Duke PGs- Hurley and Williams. Neither really had a career after their auto and motorcycle accidents.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantOh and Sidney Moncrief too, knee problems hurt his career smack dab in his prime
Bernard King pieced together a few great seasons but his career was interrupted by a few bad injuries too, he’s still a HOFer but he could’ve had a George Gervin kind of legacy.

felixthecatParticipantIf healthy Sam would have had a fantastic career, IDK about Jordan level, but he would have gone down as one of the best centers ever. His Kentucky exploits were done on one leg.

Roland209ParticipantI’ll have to respectfully disagree. His stats weren’t the greatest when he played. Albeit he was still a rookie and could have improved. However, I think he was more of a great college player who wouldn’t have transitioned well in the NBA. Kind of like Mateen Cleaves.

GrandmamaParticipantAnd I’ll respectfully tell you Jay Williams was 10x the player Mateen Cleaves ever was. He only played one year, so to talk about his stats is pretty unfair. He played on a horrible Bulls team. And other than a poor shooting percentage (40%), his per 36 numbers were actually pretty solid for a rookie. 13.1 ppg, 6.4 apg, 3.6 rpg, 1.6 spg. He was also a career 39% 3-pt shooter in college, as opposed to only 32% his rookie year. I feel he definitely improves there as well. Saying he is like Mateen Cleaves is absurd. He may not have developed into a HOF’er, but he would have been a very good player, and would have made a few all-star games.

marcusfizer21ParticipantIt was disappointing to see Jay Williams struggling as a rookie when he was expected to be the runaway ROY during that time but it was clear he needed some time to develop at the next level but, man, he’s got All-Star written all over him if not for the motorcycle accident… 9.5 ppg and 4.7 apg were solid numbers for a rook but not enough to convince any one that he is a Rookie of the Year candidate ..
I’m a guy that lives on what-ifs and I could see Jay Williams have a Deron Williams-like career… Deron didn’t blow up during his rookie year (10.8 ppg and 4.5 apg) but he did improve vastly during his second year (16.2 ppg and 9.3 apg). I could see Jay average (16 and 8) had he stayed healthy for his second year for the Bulls.
But then again, we wouldn’t be having D-Rose on our team had Jay Williams stayed healthy.

llperezi think you’re crazy. Jay williams had everything. Size, speed, effortless shooter from nba range. Many pg’s struggle as rookies, it widely considered the hardest position to make an immediate transition. john stockton, gary payton, steve nash, billups just to name a few off the top of my head struggled as rookies. Heck, billups shot 37% from the field his first season then went on to win finals mvp. Tony parker scored 9 per game his rookie year, he turned out pretty good too.
