    Because teams operate under a strict salary cap, many players cannot get paid what the deserve if the team is to build a contending roster…

    Theoretically, could teams pay players on the side? The Cavs could sign Lebron for the veteran minimum salary ($1.4 million?) and then couldn’t Lebron just get a ‘job’ for Quicken Loans (Dan Gilbert’s company) and be on payroll with Quicken Loans for $30 million per year?

    A little sketchy, but is it against the CBA?

    And if that is against the CBA, can’t Gilbert (or any other owner) could just get a good friend with a large corporation to give a player a ‘job’ and then just pay the friend back via putting the friend on the board of their company?

    we have seen a player get payed on the side.
    Andrei turned down 10 mil to play for the nets at this stage in his career.

    he has to be getting paid somewhere in Russia on the side.

      Turned down a 10 million dollar one year player option for a 3 year 9 million dollar deal with a team option.

     Before it cost the T’Wolves 5 consectutive first round picks (one was given back). The case was Joe Smith who secretly had a deal going were he would play 3 years at less than 3 million a season then get a 80 million dollar deal. The owner and his agents cooked it up and it blew up in all their faces. Owner got fined and supended for a year, agents got remanded and Smith didn’t get his 80 million. T Wolves never gained his Bird Right’s which was the point of the moves. 

    It could lose you a team in today’s NBA. 

    Just google Joe Smith NY Times

    Instead of taking 1.4 million and 30 on the side why not take 20 million in cap and 30 on the side?

    Teams do it in smaller ways offering future front office jobs, i speculate that’s why Zach Randolph took 20 million over two years instead of 16.5 for one year.      Of course its against the CBA. They wouldn’t even let the Clippers trade for KG in conjunction with trading for Doc. You think they can let teams use other revenue streams to pay players? No.

      Shoe companies have been major players in which guys can go to certain markets. I heard Addidas didn’t want Rose and Dwight Howard in the same market. Addidas pays Lillard more than the NBA, I’m not saying they will determine were he plays but having in Portland the Nike capital of the world is a strong move.

        Paul Allen doesn’t own Adidas, so he’s not paying Damian Lillard to be a part of Adidas. If he pulled strings to make Lillard the CEO of Microsoft, then yes, that would be something the league would not allow to happen.

    Yes, theoretically players can get paid on the side.  And I would assume that it happens more than we think.

     

    Now your example of Lebron making 1.4 million and getting 30 mil on the side isn’t going to happen.  There would be an investigation, and multiple people would be losing their jobs.  An owner may even be forced to sell the team if the charges were true.  But if a player is offered equal salaries from two different teams, I’m sure there have been instances where it has happened.

     

    Lol bringing up Kirilenko, he was so obviously paid on the side.
