A friend and I were disscussing international ball the other day and I brought up Klay Thompson as a possibility.

I believe Klay has the ability to make a team as a shooter with hustle and fundenmental defense. Coach K, would love a player with his abilities to use in his system. My friends doesnt not believe he will have a chance.

    Reason I think he will:

Shooting: Without a doubt can be used in critical situations or clutch time. This one is a more obvious one.

Defense: I really think that his defense is underrated by most (this is why my friend doesnt think he will make it). He plays very fundemental and solid defense, seems to be learning how to use his 6’7 body as time passes on. He doesnt block may shots with it, but seems to be able to get his body in the right place to effect the opposition player enough. One thing he must change would be falling for shot fakes, often seen him get into foul trouble, needs to understand his fouls are much more valuable to the team than pervious.

Passing: Is definately on the up with improved vision shown later last season.

Dribilling: Needs to improve, but is also on the up. Rookie season he was always searching for a outlet pass from back court but last season he shows ability to dribble to front court with defensive pressure on him. Time should help me become a solid enough dribbler.

And as a team player, being able to contribute both ways and being a son of former NBA player (High basketball IQ plus maturity) allows me to believe he will make Team USA oneday.

What are your thoughts, please share.

He can play SF easily in international play as well, making his supposedly lack of lateral movement less of a problem. I can see him as a Team USA player, especially considering the growing importance of shooting, and although he will never be the star of Team USA he could be a solid contributor.

I think Coack K could win the gold with a bunch of 2nd/3rd maybe 4th tier players…That being said I am not sure where Thompson fits in. I do know Thompson is a greater shooter, that is obvious, but in order to get on Team USA he is going to have to tryout and compete against other potential USA players. I think thats where he runs into problems. I actually do agree in saying his defense is undervalued as a whole, but if he got an invite to the USA camp the other potential 3s I think would eat him up. Those other 3s previously being listed on the roster by Coach K as Kevin Durant, Lebron, Carmello, and Iggy. Obviously the first 3 there is no arguments for him there..I could see maybe arguing to take Thompson shooting over Iggys defensive capabilities but how many shooters do we need?

Lastly, and actually as I am writing this I kind of convinced myself to agree with your friend. For the upcoming games he will have to compete with not only the players I previously mentioned but look at K. Leonard, Paul George, J. Parker, Rudy Gay..they all can’t go..plus you have players like Gordan Haywood, Chandler Parsons, J Green, E Turner that I compare him more closely too that also I’m sure would love the opportunity.

Thing is he could definitely play for USA and contribute..but I don’t think he will ever be given the chance.

I think Klay is a no brainer for this team. His game is suited for international basketball. Iso-happy wings don’t usually do well in international basketball, unless they have the fundamentals.
