I am 99% sure that Lance Stephenson will not be back in Indiana. So what next for the franchise?

Too early for that call but if it were to come true the Pacers would still be contenders to make the conference finals, maybe even win the East… So many free agency moves to come.

the Pacers do lose Stephenson, I don’t see them making the ECF unless what the guy below me said comes true and they were able to pull a sign and trade for Bledsoe. They would need a good talent to make up for Stephenson not being there. With the roster they have without Stephenson, I don’t see them beating Miami (if big 3 all stay), Chicago or Washington.

Without Stephenson the Pacers still have a lineup featuring George, West, Hibbert (taking his knocks these days) and the league’s best D.  Like the Spurs, the Pacers are about the system and would certainly sign someone to replace Stephenson.  I wouldn’t put Washington above them, especially with Ariza hitting the FA market.  Chicago would need to sign Melo or have Rose come back close to where he was to top the Pacers.  If Miami resign their big 3 they’ll be in the ECF again.
A sign and trade for a legit championship level PG would do wonders for this team.

    Stephenson sign-and-trade for either Bledsoe?

I’m not sure the Suns would love the trade, but it would give them a true two-way shooting guard to pair with a point guard. The Pacers used Stephenson in a half-court offense that had two big men clogging the lane. I think Stephenson would become extremely effective in a fast-paced system that opened the court with big men who can shoot threes. People forget that Stephenson’s best trait has always been his driving ability, but that ability isn’t used very well in the Pacers’ offense.

I’m not sure that makes the Suns a better team, but if they think that Bledsoe wants to leave, at least they can lock up a solid player (fringe all-star) for four years.

Ideally, the Pacers could get Bledsoe to pair with George moving forward. They could then start to transition over the next few years to an uptempto offense. With West aging the transition may be natural. Bledsoe is a crazy defender who pairs well with George. His play-making ability would replace Stephenson’s well.

I don’t know if it makes either team that much better, but at least neither team drops off because they lost a key piece that they couldn’t replace.

Why would the Suns trade Bledsoe for a player they could just sign?

Team fit? Cap Space?  I don’t get that, they can still trade Dragic and get something of value for him.  So the team fit would be the same.  As for cap space they could trade him to a team with cap space, a trade exception or a non guaranteed deal.  Thus the cap space could be the same.  Still doesn’t make any sense.  I’m not trying to be negative, I just don’t see why the Suns would just give away Dragic for a player they could just sign.  These trade rumors all favor the Pacers, they seem to be getting a good young player for nothing.

If they make this trade they will have to re-sign Bledsoe and that will be expensive and they view him as starting point guard now and in the future. Stephenson sign and trade will basically be like keeping Dragic financially, but in terms of building for the future Lance is only 23yrs old.

dragic to me is ready to compete now, at 27 he is starting to hit his prime. If and when Phoenix are ready to truly contend it’ll be another 3-4years to get it done properly and Dragic will be 30+. Not to say he still won’t be very good, but his best chance to be a meaningful piece on a contender would be now and Phoenix isn’t there just yet.

I understand wanting to get Stephenson, resigning Bledsoe and trading Dragic.  That’s makes sense.  What I’m saying is resign Bledsoe, I’d say would be around 4 years 60 million, maybe 5 years 60 million.  That’s 15 million, then give Stephenson 5 years 50 to 55 million(You’ll have to beat Indy’s offer), that’s 11 million.  That’s 26 million out of the 30 plus Million in cap space the suns have.  You then trade Dragic and his 7.5 million contract to a team with cap space, trade exception or players who deal you can void and other assets like first round picks.  At min you’d get a couple of first round picks and take back no salary if that’s a big deal.  You end up in the same place, but get first round picks or other players and assets.
