Interesting that the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Dante Exum is a strong chance to go 3 to the Sixers if still available.

    http://www.smh.com.au/sport/basketball/dante-exum-made-for-nba-says-patty-mills-20140625-zslb1.html

The SMH is generally considered to be a reputable publication. The article makes mention of Brett Brown and his ties to Australia, so perhaps there is something in this..  I have him falling to LA at 7, but only based on player need and swirling trade scenarios out there. I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

The SMH is generally also not going to have an expert opinion on American sports. The reason they are saying this is to hype up an Aussie sportsmen. They do it heaps whenever one of us does anything over there, as that is what interests people here. For example, the one or two times on the sports section of the news when they would talk about basketball, they would always mention that Patty Mills led the Spurs to victory with 11 points! I would not read into this at all.

Im Aussie too Buckets. Yeah its cringeworthy hearing journos call Patty Mills and Andrew Bogut superstars. The article says "almost certain" to go 3 if he’s still there. Thats a big call. If they had no idea about American sports, itd make no difference to them to say Exums going 5th or 7th or first round.  They wouldve had to get "top 3" from somewhere.

And I’ve been saying for months – he looks like Kobe at that age and IS NOT a point guard.  He’s a 2 that likes to create with the ball in his hands.  Unless you were happy with James Anderson @ 2, this is fine.  Plus coach Brown coached in Australia and can ease his transition.  To me the Sixers have a lot of options – all of them good given what we saw last year

I also read an article that strongly compared him to Kobe. That would be awesome for the sixers to take him, but how does the ball distribution work in the back court with MCW who is a ball dominant guard himself with a weak shot? I’m believing that Hinkie knows what he’s doing an will make the best choice.

If Sixers grab Exum at 3, I hope one of these proposed deals to move up to 7 or 8 happens. Otherwise you’re looking at guys like Stauskas/Harris/Lavine in a suddenly crowded backcourt with MCW and Exum. Move up, grab Randle or Gordon and target a 3 and D guy later in the draft.

If they can’t move up Payne would be a good pickup as well.

People saying Exum is a 2 – is it because he doesn’t have the vision to be a point or is it just he has a scorers mentality?

I have no more information or experience with Exum than anyone else, but to me, he is a classic combo guard. That means that he has the scoring mentality of a shooting guard with the floor game and handle of a point guard.

Lou Williams is a combo guard too, but Exum is about 5 inches taller and way longer. Since he has the skills and size to play the two I think that he has star potential at the 2. Whether or not he has star potential at the 1 is up in the air for me because I haven’t seen him enough to know if he has a point guard mentality or not. I believe that Point guards are born and not made. I also believe that MCW IS a true point guard.

For those reasons, I believe that Exum would be a great pick as our shooting guard, and my only concern becomes whether or not he is going to be ok with MCW handling the ball most of the time. It would be great for the Sixers to have two guards that are 6’6 or so and athletic and very skilled. Having two primary ball handlers is a boon as well.

The common refrain of Sixers fans these days is that if Hinkie thinks it can work then we are on board. We have a coach that is very good at developing young players. I am hoping that the MCW trade talk is all bluster to make Orlando think that we are serious about taking Exum. I hate the idea of trading MCW, and replacing him at the point with Exum. I only want Exum on the team in combination with MCW.

which is why I hope you guys end up with Wiggins so this is a non issue lol.

As far as Exum, if he has the vision, why can’t he be a less athletic/strong Penny? I hope that’s gonna turn out to be his mentality. Attack when he needs to but set up the guys around him first. I’m really excited to see how he pans out.
