I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about the NBA’s free agency period, and I have given a lot of thought and toyed with the thought of LeBron James both staying and leaving Miami.  I have thought about this a lot, and I think that I will make a list for Carmelo Anthony as well, but I have thought a lot about LBJ and what/where his best fit(s) are, and I am happy to announce that I have compiled a list of eight potential landing spots for him, but narrowed my list down to five specific teams.

I will go through each ranking and tell you why I think he would like to play there, and why he would not like to play there.  So without further ado, here we go.

    #5. New York Knicks

The New York Knicks are going to have some salary cap to play with now that Carmelo Anthony has opted out.  The Knicks had intrigued LeBron during the 2010 free agency period, but he ultimately decided to sign elsewhere with two other superstars, and I have a strange feeling that he will once again spurn New York to do the same thing.

Why LeBron may sign in New York:

Reason #1: Phil Jackson.  Phil Jackson has been an absolute savior to the New York Knicks franchise, or at least that is the way that it seems.  Phil has won 11 NBA Championships as an NBA head coach, and 2 as a player.  That is 13 NBA Championships in his ilustrious career, and that would appeal to anyone.  Phil Jackson has the mindset and connections to build a winning foundation in New York, and LeBron could ultimately look to one of the best basketball minds in the history of the NBA to help guide him to more championships.

Reason #2: Carmelo Anthony.  LeBron and Carmelo Anthony have always had a very good friendship, similar to that of James and Wade.  These two may want to play together, and if that’s the case, I can see New York as the place where they would come together.  New York does NOT have the salary cap space to sign both, but I am highly confident that if Phil could land LeBron and lure Carmelo back, they can make the necessary moves to clear cap space and surround these two with cheap, veteran talent.

Reason #3: New York Market.  The market in New York is undeniable, and one of the best markets in all of professional sports.  LeBron James would undoubtedly make the money back that he would lose from taking a pay cut, and then some.  New York would love LeBron, as they would make sure to have his face all over the city.

Why LeBron may not sign in New York:

Reason #1: Unproven Head Coach.  There is no doubt in my mind that Derek Fisher has all of the making to be at least somewhat respectable as an NBA head coach.  However, this is his first season as an NBA head coach, and he has no prior experience as any type of coach.  If LeBron went to New York, he would want to win an NBA Championship next season, and I just do not think that Fisher has the necessary coaching experience/ability to pull it off in his first year as a head coach.

Reason #2: James Dolan.  I do not know about you guys, but having James Dolan as an owner would frighten the hell out of me.  Things seem a little bit more peaceful with Phil in New York, but you can never underestimate the likes of an owner like Dolan.  At the end of the day, as the owner of the franchise, he will have the ultimate say in what happens with that organization, and if I was LeBron, that would make me feel uneasy due to Dolan’s well-documented past of screwing up the New York Knicks.

Final Opinion.  The New York Knicks are an intriguing destination for LeBron James, good enough to crack my top 5.  But to me, there are four other teams with more to offer than New York.  Who will the other 4 teams be that are better suitors for LeBron James?  Only time will tell… Thanks for reading.

May sound crazy, but I think LeBron may be a little sick of all the hooplah surrounding his every move. Listening to him this season…he just sounded exhausted in every news conference and interview. Yeah, a lot of that has to do with playing almost 100 games a season the last four years, but the media attention had to be daunting as well.

Because of that, I cannot see a situation where he leaves Miami.
    Did enjoy the rundown though.

Thank you, and that’s a very good point.  I am glad that you liked it though, because there are four more scenarioes in which I will explore in depth.

So its not even possible for LBJ to sign with New York. Unless miraculously Amare retired and/or they traded Bargnani and Chandler (neither of which will happen).

Even if Melo leaves New York this summer, the knicks are STILL in the red as far as cap space goes… It is indeed ugly for the KNicks this next year. But in 2015 they will have a lot of cap space.

Cap room can be overrated sometimes look what happened 4 years ago especially since they spent 2 years waiting for contracts to expire. People will argue that Miami got Lebron and Bosh because of cap space but it was because of Wade & Riley they signed. In summer of 2010 the Knicks over paid for Amare instead of keeping Lee. Too make things worse they foolishly traded 1st rounders n Galo, Chandler, Felton and more for Melo, Billups. Thats 4 1sts and cap space for 5 years in 2 moves. Need to build through the draft and not hand out max contracts. The rumored deal w/GS of Chandler for Barnes and Lee is worth it to me because it gives them a solid young SF in Barnes. The lack of a 1st rounder in 2 of the next 3 years really hurts. Melo I believe will either leave or ask for 20 plus million per year which is a cap killer. Lebron doesn’t want the pressure that NY/LA brings. Miami is a perfect sport town for him and it helps that Florida has no state tax so when he took a pay cut it didn’t hurt him as much.

I like the idea of melo and Lebron playing together but it’s not going to happen in new York. They have zero cap space even with melo opting out of his contract.

They have no talent or young assets, there is no chance he goes to New York.
