With the draft being just a week away, I have a lot of picks based on rumors I’ve heard and workouts. Here is my latest two round mock, with comments.

Jerami Grant is a guy I can’t figure out right now. I’m a huge Cuse fan and I realize his shooting deficiencies but I think he’s a first round talent. He’s 6’8 and extremely athletic he can actually shoot the mid range fairly decent. I remember at one point he was projected around 10 on the mock now he’s dropping all the way to the 2nd round. He would be a great value if the Bucks did get him at 31.

I think a lot of the guys in the 25-35 range are interchangeable. Grant could just as easily be at 25 IMO. There’s just so much talent in that range, and only so many spots in the 1st round. I feel guys like GR3, Grant, Stokes, and Bogdanovic could end up in the 1st, and Wilcox, Adams, McGary, and Capela could go in the 2nd.

Crazy depth in that range, this year.

One of the best Mocks I’ve seen. But I don’t agree with 13-15. Minny and PHX don’t need PG’s and The Hawks need a 3 bad. I think the Hawks will take Kyle Anderson. He’s been down here twice for workouts and they are making a big deal about it in the papers down here. Me personally I wouldn’t take him but they are trying to sell the city on this kid.

What’s really the difference between somebody like McDaniels and Grant? I like both of them but if I’m making the pick I still view Grant as a better prospect. I think KJ can be a solid role player in the league but when you’re drafting in the 20”s and a player like Grant who has a lot of untapped pomtential is still on the board I would be tempted lol. Even if he never develops that shot like we hope he’s still a long athletic body that can defend and a decent rebounder. I guess it really depends on the team

McDaniels is super tough, and fairly NBA ready. I see him as a guy who’s offensive foundation can built on, I mean, he averaged 17 a game in a major conference. Admittedly, #20 is at the high end of his range, but I think he’s a good fit in Toronto. I think he’s a guy who’ll D up for 10 years, and he has way more potential as a shooter. He hit 43 this season compared to Grant’s 0 ( 6-21 on his NCAA career).

A team could very well fall in love with Grant’s upside, but I think at worst he’s a guy who’s out of the league after his rookie contract, rather than a guy who rebounds and defends for 10 years. I just don’t like Syracuse guys as elite man defenders, the potential may be there, but he spent two years advancing his game in an area that is virtually obsolete in the NBA. Wes Johnson and Hakeem Warrick are solid on D, but that is the type of ceiling I think Grant will have on D, not a lock down wing/pick and roll guy.

Aside from athletic ability, I personally don’t feel like he he’s a ton of translatable skills. Defensive potential is there, and if he could get the mid-range going he could be a nice role player, but I he worries me as a guy who if he doesn’t pan out he’ll be like James Johnson or Julian Wright, who could both play some D, but their offense was inconsistant and riddled with poor decisions and now in 2014 they’re both kind of off the map.

He’s also only 1 year younger than McDaniels.

Grant is a tad polarizing, but I’m not really a believer. That being said, I acknowledge the intrigue around him, and I still think he’s a valid option in the 25-30 range and a no brainer pick in the early 2nd. I like McDaniels more, not necessarily more than guys I have behind him like Warren, Clarkson, and Hariston, but I think he’s a good fit in Toronto….honestly, K.J. could very well be on the board at 31 and Grant could be wearing a ball cap…I just prefer McDaniels personally.

I like your mock, I liked the older versions, too. Still, I wonder why would Minny use a lottery pick on a backup PG (yes, I read your comment, still I don’t think Rubio is going anywhere and even if he is, Wolves will fight for the POs next season and need contribution right away), same with Celtics’ 17th – don’t get me wrong – I like Ennis he could end up a Rondo-like steal, but if we assume that Rondo is staying if I was Ainge, I’d look for athletic 2-way wing player like PJ Hairston or James Young (if there), I know PJ would be a reach, but why not gamble on him. He fills a need and can contribute right away. Other option is to roll the dice on Jusuf Nurkic. Boston has lots of PFs but lack a starting-calibre center. I genuinly think that this is not Boston’s draft and their selections will be bond with trades. I mean justified by current or future trades and as you say, possibly in favour of other teams’ needs (The Love affair).

Love the line on Nate in your second round.  I think he can be a very solid NBA PG.

I like your mock but do you think the Bulls would really go with two bigs?  There are a lot of rumblings about trading for the Nuggets #11 and grabbing Harris, but they are pretty shallow on the wings, though they might believe in Tony Snell more than I do.

I’m actually a Bulls fan, and I love Payne in Chicago. Boozer is likely amnestied, and if they pursue a big free agent there’s a good chance they’ll have to part with Gibson or Mirotic. I think Payne makes all the sesnse in the world, but Ennis or Payton could be in play too, with the uncertain future of Rose, and D.J. Augustine being a free agent.

I think Rodney Hood and Tony Snell are a bit redundant in back to back years. They really have missed having a legit backup center since Omer left, and Nurkic could be an enforcer off the bench for the Bulls. He wouldn’t be the worst pick, but Butler, Snell and another wing in 4 years is just a lot of guys that are pretty similar IMO.

I do think Harris or Staus is their guy if they package to 11. I think they’d love to have either one.

Nice mock draft. You think Utah should trade Kanter if they select Vonleh and move Favors to the 5 and start Vonleh at the 4? Also, Cleanthony Early is a perfect fit in OKC at #21. They desperately need another scoring option and Early would be instant offense off the bench.

I’m also feeling Sixers drafting Saric at 10, especially because it’s not the end of the world if he doesn’t come right over, and has so much potential..

If the Sixers land Wiggins, it might be enough to convince Saric to make the jump, although supposedly his father is advising him against it.

as its very similar to mine with a few exceptions:

Mcdaniels at 20 is a good fit in Toronto but a bit of a gamble with talent like Ennis, Clarkson and Warren who should be available for the Raps

Anderson at 24 is too low as the Hawks seem locked into him and have a history of identifying the players they will draft early on.

GR3 in the second round is too low as his athleticism and lineage makes him a good gamble in the high 20’s.

Young at 37 makes ssense in terms of fit and need for the Raps but I think the will be able to draft Stokes at 37.

Smith at 39 is a bit too high but I agree with the 76ers selecting him as they need instant offense of the bench but I believe they will draft him with the 47 or 54 pick.

    Wolves will not target Payton.

they already have a PG who cant shoot. They will not draft someone as an insurance to back him up with the same flaw.

Rubio has one year left on his deal, and without Love, I really doubt the Wolves ability to bring him back. Payton has a lot to offer, and he’s one of the best guys left on the board at 13.

You’re right, Payton isn’t a good shooter, but unlike Rubio, Payton can get to the rim and score in other ways. He shot over 50% from the feild, and has strength and athleticism Ricky does not.

Rubio shoots jumpers despite being bad at them, and his FG% suffers. He didn’t go to college, but his last 3 seasons in Europe he shot 31.8% from the field, 31% and 40.4 %. They are different leagues, but Payton shot 448%, 473% and 509%.

A whopping 58% of Rubios shots were jumpers, good for a whopping .301%

Elfrid’s shot selection was almost the complete opposite as he shot 57.4% of his shots at the rim where he shot 70.1%

Neither are great shooters, but Payton’s style of play is much different.

They very well may go a different direction, but the two players aren’t very similar.
