Every talking head and their mother has seemingly already moved on from San Antone’s amazing championship run and now focus on the near future of the Heat and what will happen to them going forward. I would instead like to highlight how incredibly well the Spurs are set up for the future.

Their salary cap situation is beyond flexible. After next year, the only player under contract is Tiago Splitter and they can make qualifying offers to Kawahi and Cory Joseph. No doubt Kawahi gets a real nice extension and I’d bet they want to keep Joseph. And while I think next year will be Timmy’s and Manu’s last hurrah, Tony will only be 33yrs old in normal people years. He has a ton of basketball miles on him, making him seem older but I could see the Spurs handing him a 3year extension to finish out his career and he will still be effective. Danny Green will be 27 and they might want to keep him around though he could command a nice sized salary. He owes the Spurs a lot though in turning around his career and I’d bet on him staying for less. The futures of Patty, Aaron Baynes, Jeff Ayres and Austin Daye are obviously very up in the air and they could easily all be gone soon. So I’d envision their core still being Parker, Kawahi, Splitter and Green.

Then by that point, there are 3 internationals they have stashed that I think have the potential to make an impact sooner rather than later:

    – Davis Bertans from Latavia. Skinny, 6’10" kid who can shoot it like nobody’s business. The biggest concerns with him are his slight frame and whether he has the foot speed to be a SF in the league. I think those concerns are lessened in that he was drafted by this franchise. Shooting is a premium in this league and he’s got it. Another concern was him coming off knee surgery but he looked pretty good, scoring 20pts in 19mins in his 1st game back:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg4UzYoRWQg

At 21yrs old now, he looks a bit bulkier than when he was drafted and can surely gain a little more weight. Also, he came to the Spurs as a part of the Leonard/Hill trade, which could even further tip the scales in the Spurs favor.

    – Adam Hanga of Hungary. This write up is better than anything I can do on the kid:

    http://www.poundingtherock.com/2014/3/24/5534988/adam-hanga-spurs-europe-player-develop

What I will say though is that if the Spurs shooting coach can fix Kawahi’s shot, Hanga’s is probably way more managable. He also displays the tenants the Spurs play by: movement, passing, defensive awareness  and IQ. He is 25yrs old so he’s not the youngest prospect ever.

    – Livio Jean-Charles of France. He got hurt and was out for the whole year but was super impressive in the U-20 FIBA EuroBasket. I think in his first couple years, he could become a really good back up to Kawahi and eventually maybe more. Still only 20yrs old.

    – there is a couple other guys, including Ryan Richards of England and American guys like Marcus Denmon (Mizzou) and DeShaun Thomas (Ohio St) who I think have a 50/50 shot of ever making it at best. Another write up here:

    http://www.poundingtherock.com/2014/3/9/5484398/checking-in-on-the-spurs-draft-and-stash-prospects

Then there’s this years draft. Spurs have picks 30, 58 and 60. In my mock, I could see them taking Mitch McGary. We all saw how important Boris Diaw was to the Spurs and McGary has a similar skill set. And while he isn’t as gifted a passer, he is a very talented passer for his size and has more athletic ability than Boris ever possessed. In the 2nd round, I think they would take more internationals. I pretty much randomly mocked them 20yr old big man Lucas Mariano from Brazil, as they’ve obviously had success with Brazilian big men, and 20yr old athletic forward Michalis Kamperidis from Greece. His highlight reel is pretty impressive and there are multiple videos on his draft profile on this site (wouldn’t copy and paste link). In 2015, this site has Andrew Harrison down at #30 and that other site that shall not be named has 19yr old big man Nikola Milutinov of Serbia (which makes sense given their track record).

I’ll wrap this up now. In a few years I can envision their roster looking something like:

    PG: Parker, Joseph, (open)

    SG: Green, Hanga, (open)

    SF: Kawahi, Jean-Charles, Betrans

    PF: McGary, (multiple open spots)

    C: Splitter, Milutinov, (open)

Player rights they hold: Denmon, Richards, Thomas, Mariano, Kamperidis

With their cap space, they can obviously fill the bench pretty liberally in terms of spending and maybe even sign a big free agent. I bet Jason Kidd often thinks about what could have been had he signed in San Antonio over New Jersey. They also have all these young guys that can be used as trade bait to catch a bigger fish. There will never be another Timmy D or GINOBLIIIIII!!! but the Spurs have still put themselves in a great position to be successful as they transition away from the vets and I wanted to dive into that a little more than most analysts do. Sorry for the length and thanks for your time.

I like McGary but got the feeling that Spurs might have better options at #30. Kawhi is pretty much the only athletic wing player they’ve got and I would not be surprised if players like KJ McDaniels, GR III or PJ Hairston end up drafted drafted by SAS at #30. They also need a backup post-player and few prospects might be there at the bottom of the draft – Alec Brown, Jordan Bachynski, Isaiah Austin, Juvonte Reddic, Patric Young. The other root Pop and the front-office might take is to draft is to go international at #30 – Micic, Capela, Nurkic (if slips) or even Bogdanovic – those guys are clearly not NBA ready but can be stashed for a season or two and come to the L at higher level. As for the current players’ right they hold – Hanga, Bertrans and the others – I think they’ll have hard times to crack Spurs’ or any other NBA rooster. Maybe only the french guy they drafted last year have some untabbed potential but sadly he got injured and we wouldn’t know at least for now.

Bertans has loads of potential man. Only 21yrs old. Lights out shooter. I disagree on him. Hanga on the other hand may be a little too old but even then, Calathes, Prigioni and others have come over as older players and made an impact. And they need another big guy as much as they need another wing. Timmy, Boris and Bonner are all old and they could use some fresh blood with Splitter and one who has more potential than Ayres or Baynes. At wing, atleast they have Kawahi and Green in place going forward, with some international possibilities. Not much depth in the frontcourt.

He’s definitely Raw but given time to develop he can play. He’s long, quick and has a decent jump shot for a man his size. Richards is only 23 years of age.

Solid post and good info. I like Livio-jean and Adam Hanga to join the Spurs hopefully this season.

Ryan Richards is not living up to his potential and actually has some mental problems, so I don’t see him doing anything.

I like Bertans but the torn ACL didn’t help his case. Lots of posibilities for the Spurs in the future from Europe.

Probably will lose Bonner (thank God), there has been rumors of Patty Mills to the Knicks, Dayne is non-garunteed money. I like Baynes, should be interesting.

The Spurs really don’t need to do much to stay competitive for at least one more year. I’d like to see them get a little more athletic at the 2 or 3 position to help DG and Kawhi. OKC still scares me with Durant/Westbrook due to the pure athleticism.

Yeah the Spurs definitely have a bright future.  I hope Dennis Lindsey can bring that type of opportunity to my Jazz.  The French kid, Jean-Charles, is really exciting.  I think it was on another post here that he won the MVP of the Nike Hoop Summit on the international team that included the likes of Andrew Wiggins and Dante Exum which says a lot especially playing against the level of talent that was on the USA side such as Parker.  I think San Antonio has it locked down for quite sometime.  Hopefully they don’t overpay too many of these guys though.  I love Kahwi and wish the Jazz would have taken him at 12 in that 2011 draft but like a lot of other people have said I think the finals MVP situation (even though he deserved it hands down) could set expectaions that might not be acheived and pay a player a max contract that they wont live up to.  Just like I hope that Utah doesn’t throw one at Gordon Hayward this year.  Way good post though I wasn’t even aware of the other prospects the Spurs had.

At 30 they have choices like Anderson (if he falls), McGary, Hairston, and even Markel Brown. Their staff works with everyone and can make anyone better. The current mock has Isaiah Austin falling to them which could be awesome.

They probably need a stretch four who can hit the 3 AND defend inside/block shots.

If they can work on McGary’s shot would he be the guy?

Patric Young is limited offensively, but he is big and a good athlete and rebounder.  He can play next to either Duncan or Splitter and defend the paint.

They could look at it like they are trying to put together a new Young Core.  They already have Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green.  If they resign Patty Mills, that would give them another guy.  So, who should be the fourth young guy?  Their young perimeter looks great.  What about an inside guy?

At 58 or 60, they can look at Luke Hancock.  He is a crafty guard who can shoot and score.  Solid passing and all around game.

Geron Johnson is a bigger point guard who is basically a combo guard.  He is a great athlete and can drive, and guard BOTH guard spots.  If they can work on his shot, he would be a great backup to TP, and Danny Green.  They can use Geron as a guy to throw at point guards like Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, and Steph Curry, OR shorter 2 guards like D Wade, Bradley Beal, and Victor Oladipo.

If the Spurs want a low post scorer and a LEGIT rebounder at 30, Jarnell Stokes would be a great option.  He also has a foater and a Euro Step.  He could be a monster if he improves his consistency on his shot.
