    Mello, Shump, Hardaway jr.

    For

    Harden, Asik, 2014 1st rounder (#25 overall)

Did I just include Harden? Oh yes I did….

Mello is an upgrade over Harden. Their strengths are their offense and weakness their defense. With that said, Mello is the better offensive player and Harden a much worst defender. Harden is a much better playmaker for others, but that’s why Lin remains as the starting pg. I know he has not been himself lately, but we expected that since both he and Harden needed the ball. With Harden gone, Lin can play his normal game.

Shumpert also brings in elite perimeter defense, which Houston lacks and add to that Hardway who is a very good young player.

    Howard

    Jones

    Anthony

    Shump

    Lin

Bench lead by Parsons, Beverly, Hardaway

Knicks, get a star to replace Mello and to build around. Also get additional 1 year 8 million contract that comes off the books giving them space to build around Harden during the next 2 Summers

    Chandler

    Stoudamire

    Smith?

    Harden

    Felton

I’m sure that even if the rockets were to remotely entertain the idea of swapping harden for Melo that they would immediately hang up the phone once the Knicks asked for asik AND first rounder as well.

The Knicks have no leverage in Any negotiations regarding a sign and trade involving melo since he is unrestricted.  They(the rockets) can probably trade asik for a first rounder to another team and then use the cap space to sign melo either way.

Regarding that, which was mentioned before, how does trading Asik give them enough cap space? He’s making 15, but only 8 counts against the cap. Houston is about 6 million over already. Riding themselves of both Asik and Lin still wouldn’t give them enough space. Please tell me if I’m missing something here.

You are NOT wrong.  99% of the trades proposed do not take into account the salary cap.  In comparison, 99% of NBA GM’s seem to value salary cap flexibility over small talent increases.

Both Asik and Lin were signed to ridiculous contracts that caught both the Knicks and Bulls off guard at the time as "Poison Pill" contracts.  The Rockets were laughing at what they thought were steals at the time.  Now, they need to be very creative with trading these guys and they have either found that impossible due to the unique nature of these contracts OR they are extremely overvaluing their assets.  Asik SHOULD have been moved.  It would have been best for everyone involved.  So they either wanted too much in return, there wasn’t a market for him, OR (and I find this to be the most likely scenario) the weird nature of the contract caused too many issues to get a deal done.

Agreed.  The only hope they have is if they can get a team like Chicago to give them a 1st rounder or better for Melo.  They have 0 picks in the upcoming draft and are trying to put together a new system and basically are stuck in neutral for an entire season waiting for Bargnani, Chandler, and Amare to come off their books. But you are right…

They have ZERO leverage.  Besides adding a pick or two, which a team like the Bulls would only do because of the guaranteed salary that 1st rounders make which would not allow enough room under the cap for enough of a contract for Melo, MAYBE the Knicks could unload a bad contract like JR Smith.  But pretty much any team but the Lakers that might be in the running for Carmelo doesn’t have room to add another bad contract.  The Lakers do, which would be a great fit, but ONCE AGAIN…

Carmelo owns ALL the leverage, followed by the team he decides to sign with, followed by the Knicks (who only have a tiny bit due to the amount of money they can help Carmelo make and since they are over the cap even without Carmelo they can attain either a pick or young asset in exchange for taking on another bad expiring deal that will expire before the big free agent class of 2015).

If I am the Knicks I want Jeremy Lin, Omer Asik, Chandler Parsons, and draft picks.

The Knicks would win that trade.

And if I am the Rockets I laugh in your face.

Unfortunately the Rockets missed the opportunity to cash in on Asik or Lin if they are serious in their pursuit of Melo.  Teams know this, cap space is the only thing they will get for these guys since they will have to trade them to a team with cap space in order to prevent from bringing back salary in return thus rendering trading Asik and Lin pointless.

Same thing goes with the Bulls.  People keep negging me for saying this but fail to provide any realistic scenario where either of these teams trades these players to clear cap room and nets something in return.

Of the teams who have cap space the vast majority are going to be in the lottery… and no lottery team will be willing to give up draft picks for one of these players.

Not to say Asik wouldn’t be worth a late lottery pick potentially, just that given the circumstances, if the Rockets plan to chase Melo.. they have no leverage to demand anything else.

I like the idea of a trade to Houston, idk how much I agree with all who is involved in the trade, but the main thing for Melo is to get out of the East away from Lebron……..spurs are even older, okc still having trouble with chemistry (westbrook vs durant balance) and aint no telling what the clippers are gonna look like. So if the rockets can keep Howard, possibly keep Harden and then add Mel and a few other pieces I think they could take the West for some years to come
