imAboutDatActionParticipantim not impressed with him. he’s a one trick pony. he can shoot the 3 ball, but thats all he can do. if he starts missing, he’s useless. let me run down the things wrong with him..
1. Does not play defense.
2. Not a good rebounder
3. poor handles
4. cant create offense for himself or others
5. not quick laterallly or explosive off the bounce.
6. plays soft
7. wingspan is not impressive.
i would not waste a lottery pick on him. doesnt provide much value. if his 3 ball doesnt fall down at the NBA, a coach would have no choice but to leave him on the bench.
will bump in the future when he eithers bust or proves me wrong.

HomerKangParticipantI think so too. No idea what the person’ s thinking was on the current homepage board by having the Sixers select him at 10. What are they, crazy ?

TarHeelRavenParticipantRodney Hood is not a lottery talent, I agree with you. I do think he can provide good value in the early 20’s. His no show game against Mercer really hurt his draft stock in my opinion. He waited for the worst time to play his worst game of the season. I think he can be a good guy coming off the bench and maybe a starter somewhere down the road. He’ll have a solid NBA career.

For_Never_EverParticipantI also think he is too highly rated and agree with most of your points.
He is a player that can come off the bench to knock down the open shot like Jame Jones.

Jdean24ParticipantI couldn’t agree more. The best thing that will happen is he will slide far enough to maybe play with an elite point guard so he doesn’t have to create his own shot which is a huge weakness of his.

tuck243Participantand I agree… I remember coming on this site and seeing his name there and just confused… I never really see him take it to the hole and all he did was shoot 3’s… I didn’t see much of a game there, it just seem so one diminsional… Thought he was a 4 year player at Duke for sure… But I guess his numbers allowed him to be in this position… These guys get paid the big bucks and do this for a living… We do this as a hobby… We’ll see who’s right and I have a feeling we are…

JoeWolf1I don’t think he’ll bust…I think he’ll slide. I could honestly see Hood dropping to the 18-25 range where his expectations will be much lower.

MopgrassParticipantWhat I really like was that they ran zero plays for him and he scored about the same amount of points as Parker.
Other than that, he has a great shot from everywhere, respectable athleticism, and a couple pretty good moves. I’m hesitant to make any predictions, but if you’re a great shooter, there’s a pace for you in the NBA and usually, the only thing that would stop you is a lack of athleticism, but Hood is solid there.
I’m sure his stock dropped a bit because he fell off at the end of the year.

tidhoParticipantThe expectations for him aren’t high enough to bust. He’s viewed as a 3&D guy, not a playmaker. I don’t see anyone suggesting he’ll be a star. I also don’t see why anyone thinks he can’t stand in a corner and drain threes all day long.
I’ve seen him compared to Sean Elliot, which is a pretty good comparison in a lot of ways. Hood didn’t have the that type of impact in college though. Of course he was also playing with Parker so it wasn’t a wide open opportunity either.

benny15Participantto be a 3 and d guy you have to be able to play D, something i havent seen from him honestly. bad technique or natural feel on that end of the court. if he gets picked, it’ll be due to his offensive upside and shooting since he doesnt bring any defensive qualities on the court.

TrollingParticipantAnother thread about Hood being a bust… I am not sure of the expectations many of you have for him, but he should be able to meet his actual expectations. Hood is a willing defender, 3 point shooter, above average athlete, and led the nation with his pull up jumper (per DEx). The last is very telling of what he can be; this makes him more than a “spot up” shooter. Hood can dramatically improve any team that needs spacing and looks to be more than a one trick pony. Duke had no pg, so Hood and Parker had to generate much of their own offense (Hood almost 1/3 per DEx).

mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}Honestly I see Hood fitting in on many of the rosters of the NBA. Sure he wouldn’t be a key piece on the Heat, but you see the spacing James Jones provides when he’s out there. Jones is a huge defensive liability though, Hood is at least a willing defender who is fluid and moves well laterally. Watching these playoffs, teams such as the Rockets, Bobcats, Raptors, Thunder, Heat, & probably any team to some degree. The Bobcats might be the only team he starts on out of that group, but once again… What are your expectations?
It may take a year or two to adjust, but I would love to have an above average 6’8 athlete who can get his own shot, knock down the open shot, has a low turnover rate, solid basketball IQ, and hit the pull up jumper on my team. Sure he has flaws, all prospects do, but his flaws are not very concerning when comparing him to other shooters. Spacing is the new NBA and Hood should be an asset in attempting to provide the star players with room to work.

OhCanada-ParticipantHe reminds me of Wesley Johnson. Great athlete and jumpshot which allowed him to dominate lesser competition in the NCAA on a stacked team although I doubt he has the assertiveness to become a starter in the NBA on a good team. By no chance will I completely rule him out and call him a bust. He can really hit pull up jumpers and set shots well so a coach should have no problem finding him a niche but its up to him to perform.
Whether or not he is a lottery talent remains to be seen. Although a team looking for decent glue guy to mold and be steady next to a star player may want to pick him up and that looks like it starts with Cleveland at 9.

hoopsfanatic7ParticipantBehind Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins, Rodney Hood is probably the best wing prospect in the draft. At the very least we know that he has very good size for his position and that he can really shoot the ball from deep. Those two attributes alone will keep him in the conversation and makes him one of the safest picks regardless of where he is taken. The kicker is that he has far more to offer than just being able to shoot 3’s.
1. “does not play defense” – false. This is definitely an area in which Hood needs to improve but he is more than capable. I was at the ACC Tournament and he put forth more than solid efforts defending KJ McDaniels, TJ Warren and Joe Harris. He also guarded the opposing team’s best player all year long for Duke. He was their best defender and always stepped up to the challenge.
2. “not a good rebounder” – true. His numbers should have been better here considering how small Duke was in the post this year. He didn’t look to box much. This undoubtedly would have raised his average by atleast two a game. Again, it doesn’t mean that he’s not capable. There were games where he was very solid on the boards. Not consistent enough.
3. “poor handles” – false. Hood is an elite ball handler…especially for his size. This is a strength along with his scoring ability that will undoubtedly make him a lottery pick. He can attack going both left and right and can pretty much get anywhere on the court whenever he wants. He was one of the best in the country scoring off of ballscreens this year and he was absolutely deadly at attacking closeouts.
4. “can’t create offense for himself or others” – false. He’s a smart, heady, unselfish player who was Duke’s best decision maker this year. Hood is good off the bounce. So good that he would often draw two on his drives resulting in wide open jump shots for teammates and dump down dunks and layups for bigs. Duke used him in the post too where he was able create matchup problems for teams by attacking smaller guards and hitting wide open shooters out of double teams.
5. “not quick laterally or explosive off the bounce” – false. Hood has good footwork. He never appeared to be stuck in quicksand. His flaw defensively was that he would come out of his stance or relax while guarding the ball. When in a stance, he looked like a defender. As for explosiveness, Hood has a very smooth and fluid game. This doesn’t mean that he isn’t explosive. I saw at least 5 or 6 dunks where his head was at the rim. That’s got to count for something.6. “plays soft” – false. Not sure where you’ve seen this. Lamar Patterson is one of the most physically gaurds in the country and I witnessed Hood completely lock him down and frustrate him with physicality. Same can be said about TJ Warren in the Duke vs NC State ACC Tourney game. He also guarded 4’s at times this year and I never saw him get dislodged or put in the basket by post players.
7. “wingspan is not impressive” – true. He has a 6’8 and 1/2 wingspan, he stands 6’8 and 1/2 in shoes, and he weighs 210. Pretty good numbers for a NBA 2 guard/small forward.
He may not have impressed you but he has impressed NBA teams across the league looking for his attributes and I for one can see why. Hood’s offensive game translates perfectly to the NBA. You can’t say that about the other highly regarded wing prospects in this year’s draft. So yeah, you’d be a fool not to consider drafting him in the lottery.

hoopsfanatic7ParticipantAs I mentioned above, Rodney Hood is probably the safest pick a team could make in the mid to late lottery and the thread starter is making him out to be Reggie Bullock. UNC fans will even chuckle at this. Lets look at the parts of his game that translate well to the net level.
1. Size – Hood is 6’8 and1/2, weighs around 210 and has a 6’8 and 1/2 wingspan. His wingspan is probably below average compared to guys his height but he still has great size for a traditional 3 or untraditional 2. Matchup problems come in to play here depending on how you choose to use him.
2. Shooting the 3 – He shot at a 42% clip this year from behind the arc. He’s shown that he can consistently make range shots in catch and shoot situations and off the dribble. NBA teams are always looking for shooters who can effectively space the floor.
3. Versatility and scoring – Duke used Hood all over the floor this. No he wasn’t their primary scoring option but he created matchup problems. He can break people down off the dibble, score in transition, catch and shoot, and score it in the post…and all at a high clip. Hood being primarily a 3 pt shooter is a bad rumor.
4. Excellent off of ballscreens – The NBA is all about read and react and most if not all offenses heavily rely on the pick and roll. Well Hood was one of the best in the country at it. Duke’s system highlighted this particular part of his game and it will undoubtedly translate to the NBA.
5. Deadly attacking closeouts – Yes, I said deadly. Hood is an absolute nightmare when he has someone running at him on the perimeter. His shooting ability paired with a mean head fake and jab creates problems for other teams because is a good slasher and has a great pull up mid-range jumper.
6. High Offensive I.Q. – Hood was by far Duke’s best decision maker this year. You could see him directing traffic and getting his teammates in positions to attack this year. He made heady plays for his team this year and absolutely dissected 2/3 zones by always making the correct play.
7. Efficiency – Hood was not Duke’s primary scorer or go to guy but he was very efficient and effective. Jabari Parker averaged 3 more points than Hood and shot 87 more shots on the season. The NBA needs guys who can get a lot done with limited touches and Hood can provide that.
These are just a few reasons why he is so intriguing as a prospect. Yes, he obviously has flaws and areas of improvement (as do all draftees) but Hood is pretty solid all the around. If he performs well in Chicago and has solid workouts with teams slotted for the lottery, it would be hard for any team needing scoring on the wing to pass up on him. Solid prospect.

Lotto StudParticipantWhat I like that no one has mentioned is his ability to play around the rim. I love that he can offensively rebound and is not afraid to go up and flush on someone when he needs to attack the basket.

imAboutDatActionParticipantthe kid is soft and didnt rebound the ball like he should’ve.
0- Posted on: Tue, 04/29/2014 - 8:14am #895293
hoopsfanatic7ParticipantWhat evidence can you provide to prove he’s soft? And will his inability to get a lot of rebounds prevent him from landing a spot in the top 14?
When you weigh the pros and cons of his game, there is no question that he belongs right there where he is projected.

imAboutDatActionParticipanthis inability to get to the line, to seek/absorb contact, and rebounding. those are good ways to determine someones toughness. not to mention he played bad defense, he didnt like contact.
the kid is soft.

hoopsfanatic7ParticipantYou’re reaching and from the looks of it, you’re trying pretty hard to discredit the kid. Hood is a far better prospect than you’re giving him credit for. These videos prove you wrong and undeniably show why he is regarded as a lottery pick.
Your opinion is your opinion but none of these guys are finished products at this point. They all have room for improvement and most will improve when given the opportunity. Outside of Parker and Wiggins, you’d be hard pressed to find that combination of shooting ability, skill, and size in this years draft. If so, name them…I’ll wait.

imAboutDatActionParticipantshowing highlight videos dont help your case.
the problem with Hood is that he plays smaller than his 6’8. his only positive is that he can shoot the college 3 ball, and i dont think thats enough to warrant a lottery pick.
he’s not a great athlete in NBA terms. skilled? well, i mean yes he can shoot, but he cant handle, pass, or defend.

hoopsfanatic7Participantlol…No, showing “highlight videos” show the truth. GMs use tools like this and advanced stats to make decisions on players all the time.
You said that he didn’t like contact. I showed you instances where he sought out contact and scored the ball for and ones. The ‘Versatility’ breakdown video showed you his entire package and you’re still discrediting the kid.
He’s not skilled and can’t handle the ball? lol Here’s another “highlight video”….Make sure you log off after you watch it because it’s sure to reveal how stupid you sound trying to convince people that Hood can’t play.
Official ACC Highlights: Duke Forward Rodney Hood
Now if you watched that you saw:
– 3’s off the catch
– 3’s off the bounce
– midrange j’s going left and right
– operating out of ball screens
– smooth finishes at the rim
– crossovers
– no look passes
– floaters
– head fakes
– jabs
– step backs
– athleticism (head at the rim)
– catching lobs
– read and react
– attacking closeouts
– I can go all daylol…Log off and never enter this thread again. Rodney Hood is legit.

imAboutDatActionParticipantLOL
highlight videos arent good tools to use in an arguement due to the fact they only shows the positives. i can find a highlight video of a bad prospect and come out thinknig he’s great due to the nitpicking involved.
i’ve seen enough of Hood to come out thinking all he can provide is 3 point shooting. thats not enough to be a lottery pick.
i can tell you have strong feelings for Hood so im not gonna even continue with you.

hoopsfanatic7ParticipantI enjoy debating and I enjoy destroying baseless arguments like the one you have presented here. I’ve been following Hood since Mississippi State and I really think he will develop into a really good all around pro. So yeah, you can say I have strong feelings for wanting to see the kid excel. Not so sure why your feelings towards him are so strong though…??
You started a thread and named it “Rodney Hood will bust” and repeatedly called the kid soft among other things that I chose to address and refute in my post. I gave you sound reasoning and proof as too why you were wrong in your assessment. We can agree to disagree.

tidhoParticipantI don’t think Hood is getting enough credit in this thread. Parker was the centerpiece of that offense and Hood did what was needed to play off him (a necessary trait at the next level, btw). Hood didn’t showcase all of his ability all the time, but as the highlights prove, the ability is there.
He’s not a superstar by any stretch, but he certainly can be a solid NBA starting SF.
Reasonable option as early as 8 to the Pistons, and would be a tough pass for the Cavaliers at 9. Neither would be sorry.
