Just wanted to do a comparison on Batum’s and Greek Freak’s rookie years. They are both long, athletic 6’8" wing players who came from Europe without college experience

    Per 36m

    Batum: 45% fg, 10.5ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.8apg, 1.2spg, 1.0bpg

    Freak: 41% fg, 10.0ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.8apg, 1.1spg, 1.2bpg

So both have very similar rookie stats. I don’t watch Milwaukee games, so can anyone therefore explain to me why Greek Freak is being touted as the most talented player in the 2013 draft when he projects more like Batum 2.0?

They were both 19 during their rookies years, too.

Because Giannis has better upside. His growth plate is still open, and doctors are saying that he’ll eventually be a seven-footer. He’s also a more physically impressive specimen all around, taller, quicker, more athletic, whereas Batum’s were more technical. Giannis has more of the things you can’t teach, which are more important in determining a player’s upside.

He’s a surprisingly aggressive player for being 19. There were so many times where he’d get a rebound on one end and then take it coast to coast with a full head of steam. The ball handling and agility he displayed on these plays was incredible

If Giannis develops into Batum the Bucks should be extremely happy. Batum contributes and effects the game in a positive manor in every possible way. He is arguably the most versatile player in the leagur with the abillity to play 3 positions offensively and gaurd 4 defensively. He can slash, cut, shoot midrange, find shots, long range, spot up, pull up, penetrate, create.

Anyone expecting him to be better than Batum is expecting alot. Any team in the league would start Batum.

If Giannis reaches 7′ and fills out, he could guard/play all 5 positions. Doubt he’d ever need to, but still could have the ability to

OhCanada’s point is good.  If Giannis becomes as good as Batum, he very likely could become the best player from this draft class.

The thing is, Giannis very well could be even better than Batum.  Giannis is a much more inexperienced player than Batum at the same age, without nearly as much exposure to high level competition.  Giannis had an up-and-down season, but a season that compares favorably with the rookie years of Paul George, Andrei Kirilenko and Nic Batum.

Giannis has very legitimate all-star potential, with a level of production and effectiveness this season that is rather incredible given his complete lack of exposure to tough competition prior to being drafted.  Giannis is the most physically gifted rookie in the league and has a very unusual and versatile skill set, with the work ethic and drive to get better.

Giannis is exceptionally good at turning defense into offense and excels at getting to the rim.  That gives him star potential.  His game is less finesse based than Batum’s and he is more assertive with the ball in his hands than a young Batum.  Giannis needs to get stronger and is still clearly uncomfortable in his growing body, but has a level of length and athleticism matched only by Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant.  Giannis has fantastic court awareness, hence his elite court vision for a teenager and his emerging defensive instincts.  He already is the Bucks’ third best defensive player (after Larry Sanders and Nate Wolters, whom Giannis will soon surpass), as embarassing for the Bucks as that is.

Also, Giannis is a very good passer. I think he will be close to 4-5 apg in a few seasons

Batum is also, though. 5.1 APG this year.

Giannis could very possibly be 7′ by the time he is finished growing. How many 7 footers can you think of that have the skill set Giannis has? I also think he’s a better athlete than Batum

Sorry Land of Grant, just realized my post was very similar to yours lol. My bad. Still feel like a lot of people don’t know Giannis could be a 7 footer, so worth mentioning again. He could be a transcendent player with his size and skill set
