he has offically said he’s returning for his Jr season thru twitter.

i personally think this is a mistake. from everything i read, he was a certain lock for the 1st round. now he’s going back to UK where they have a absolute loaded front court with him,Marcus Lee, Dakari Johnson, Lyles, and Towns.

It’s such a unique situation when one chooses Kentucky. Now their gonna have a frontcourt with 4 McDonalds All-Americans and WCS who was good enough to be one. Not sure how it’s going to work with WCS, Towns, Lyles, Johnson and Lee. Honestly think the best decision for Dakari would be to transfer but most players especially blue chip recruits aren’t patient enough to sit out a whole year. Wouldn’t be a bad option for Lee either.

Dakari is better off declaring for the draft then transferring. this year’s class is slim at the Center position.

at this point, the only reason you should go to UK is if you’re a highly rated 5 star recruit who knows they will be playing. Marcus Lee made a mistake going over there. he knew Randle was going along with Johnson, who both were rated higher than him. now, it looks like he’s going to continue to get recruited over.

Same for Harrell, I had him slightly lower and I think there were remote chances he slipped to the second round, but he was almost a lock for the first. Also, he had a pretty disappointing season, losing his spot in the starting lineup to Dakari and showing little to no improvements in his game. Next year Kentucky is loaded among bigs, he will have to face really tough competition and if he doesn’t make a huge step ahead in his game he might kills his stock. Well, of course Dakari hasn’t said anything yet on whether he’s coming back or not and at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s considering the idea. He’s probably a bubble first rounder and not ready at all, but coming back might hurt him even more. Still, they have two top ten recruits coming in and Marcus Lee (who might have thrown his tv/laptop/phone/whatever he used to know about WCS out of the window). Also, funny how the Wildcats are going to be incredibly loaded with big man but really poor in the backcourt, if Harrisons and Young all leave. That’s what happens when you rely too much on potential one and doners.

even though i dont agree with Harrel’s decison as well, at least when he goes back he’s gauranteed alot of playing time. WCS isnt & like you said, Johnson already took his spot in that lineup due to how inconsistent he is.

and yes, Lee most likley was pissed when he heard the news. he had great momentum going into next year, and now it looks like he might be on the bench again. transfering really isnt an option because if you’re a legit prospect, like Lee is, transfering and wasting a year does more harm than good.

Yeah, I definitely agree, Harrell is going to have plentyt of opportunities but there’s a downside to that too, he’s pretty raw on offense and even if he improves his game (unless he turns into a great low post scorer all of a sudden, which is unlikely) he might struggle if asked to do too much. And I think Harrell would’ve gone higher, even if there are very few centers in this draft so probably WCS wouldn’t have gone too low. But yeah, probably WCS’s decision was even worse, as much as I have problems blaming a kid for coming back to school.

I think Lee should consider transfering nonetheless, staying another year riding the pine isn’t going to help him anyhow and sitting one year could be really helpful for a player’s development if he works hard, I’m thinking of Kelly Olynyk.

Trey Lyles should have just stayed committed to Indiana. People always get on Tom Creans case but he got his players to play to thier potential. Maybe not with Vonleh this year but maybe Vonleh needs to take some responsibility for that.

Most of u guys criticize one and done or early entry and then when one Cal’s guys stays u call him stupid. Make up ur minds already. Man the Cal hate is STRONG. A Cal player with a 3.0 stays to get his degree and improve his stock AND to win a chip and u idiots guys cry. Hmmm… sounds suspect.

i like Cal , i also have no problem with the 1 and done rule.

i dont like when players return when they’re locks to be 1st round picks, no matter if you’re a freshmen, sophmore or Jr.

I think they should be allowed to leave after high school but thats a different argument.

I agree about the players leaving but I think its only crazy for players to stay if they are lock lottery picks.  When players are projected outside of the lottery theres always a chance they could continue to slip.  WCS has alot of maturing to do both on and off the court so I can’t say its a bad decision.  He will likely continue to get plenty of minutes and he could end up being top 10, top 5 in the coming years with all the talent he has.

Wow! This is crazy!  I actually thought him and Randle were the only locks to declare.

As a UK fan, I’m excited because I love watching him play but there has to be some transfers or declares to come.  They are loaded at the 4 and 5 spots next year.  Lee, WCS, Dakari, Lyles, Towns, and Poythress who can play both 3 and 4.

I say Dakari pulls a stunner and declares.  That leaves Lee and Lyles to rotate the 4 and Towns and WCS to rotate the 5.  If not, things will be interesting.

Does this push Poythress out?  Now there will be even fewer minutes to go around. And like you guys said, WCS and Harrell are going back to school so there aren’t too many big guy.

Poythess also played well and had some solid plays so be should have some buzz.

And take into account that next year will be loaded with big men.  This might now be the draft for Poythress.

Poythress is not a 1st round selection though. he’s the worst kind of tweener and didnt improve this year. i read that he’s a year away from earning his degree, so it wouldnt make sense for him to leave, even with a loaded front court next year at UK.

If young does stay then Poythress will be the backup SF and Cal will be able to do hockey like line changes.

Cal did say after last year(2012-13) that he would NEVER AGAIN have a short bench like he had when Noel got injured and they had only WCS and Poy inside.

PS they also have Derek Willis a 6-10 200lb SF/PF freshman who was highly recruited, especially by Louisville and Perdue, who barely got to play as well for what its worth.

Willis is 6’8 and was a 3 star recruit. not exactly a ‘ highly’ rated recruit.

he would play for other schools in the nation though. i dont know why he wouldnt leave, its become obvious he will continue to be recruited over at UK.

I think it should be the opposite, I mean, I don’t usually neg anyone, except for offensive posts. If I disagree I’d rather explain why and provide arguments instead, especially when someone might have wrote something I think it’s wrong, but he had a rationale behind it to explain his reasons. I think it’s disrespectful, childish and dumb to just give neg, each time someone makes the effort of using logic arguments to make his case he is making the forum a better place, he’s doing a good job of making the discussion worth reading. Getting rid of such posts with a neg is childish and I think might frustrate users trying to write quality posts. Obviously it’s not the same for +1, I tend to give them pretty often, as I think it’s pretty useless to post just to write I agree with you, or great post or whatever.

He’ll still be a starter next year did you see how Cal was subbing the last three tournament games. He was managing his big men minutes pretty well.

If twins come back and if Jabari Parker leaves (that’s a big if at this point) UK will definitely be the #1 ranked team next year. And any word on James Young? Imagine all them coming back. UK will be scary next year if he does.

but word from Lexington is that Young is leading the charge to try to get everyone to agree to stay, supposedly if Young stays Randle will honor his moms wishes and stay as well.

Basically if the Harrisons decide to stay then Young will tell Randle lets stay and Derek Willis(Louisville native) and EJ Floreal(nephew of UK alum) will both become walk-ons to leave scholarships with the 4 incoming freshman getting theirs and the ones freed up by Jared Polson and Jon Hood who graduated.

I know, I’m not trying to make light of that situation at all with Harrow. It was just a dark humor way of saying that I’m predicting one of the bigs will transfer; no harm meant.

I’m a little disappointed, because if the Celtics aren’t lucky enough to land Joell Embiid with their lottery pick, I was hoping they could pick up WCS with their second pick. We need a big, athletic, front court player who can block shots and defend the rim.

UK needs the twins back.  They loose those two guys and they have to rely strictly on Ullis and Booker.  Front court is great but not nearly as effective without guards.  I wouldn’t be surprisedmif you see Dakari Johnson test the waters.  I personally think he is a better long term pro prospect compared to WCS.

Good news if your a Kentucky fan if the team manages not to lose their frontcourt to transfers and/or declarations, bad news for Dakari Johnson, Trey Lyles and Karl Towns and Marcus Lee.  This year was supposed to be Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee’s breakout year and now minutes are going to be tough to come by if they stay with upperclassmen coming back and freshman coming in.

Then again, maybe Kentucky is trying to set an example here in that it doesn’t matter how much talent they accumulate, what matters is they want to win a championship.  I can imagine WCS getting so close to a championship and then not being able to help his teammates over the hump was taken in to consideration in his decision to return.  It’s not a good move for WCS as an NBA prospect, but it’s a great move for Kentucky’s basketball team moving forward next season. No team in the nation is going to be able to top their frontcourt.

Only person it really hurts is Lee. WCS and Dakari(?) will continue to share minutes like last year while Towns and Lyles will split the PF minutes that Randle leaves behind. Alex will start and play almost all of his time at the SF. Not sure who is hearing the "trying to get the guys to stay" thing but it’s a well known secret that Randle is gone and Young is as close to a lock as you can get. The only questions are the twins and surprisingly Dakari

This is the problem with Kentucky. They get too much talent. It’s a good problem to have, but I’m sure there are some guys who could have made it to the NBA on another team and got stuck on Kentucky’s bench.

Poythress and Lee were underplayed this year, next year there will be more. When are players going to learn that they could get to the NBA more easily on a team that doesn’t stockpile to the point of gluttony. I don’t blame Kentucky, they do a super-awesome job. But some kids need to make better decisions.

Poythress was not underplayed, he underperformed.  Lee didn’t play very much because when he came in, he wasn’t prepared.  Earlier in the year you can see him getting yelled at for running the wrong play or guarding the wrong man.  All good coaches have relatively short rotations.  You put out your feelers and see who performs, but you can’t consistently play 10 players in March, at least not if you want to be good.  At some point you have to pick your horses and stay with them.

Going to Kentucky will make you showcased.  The only other offer Marcus Lee considered was California.  Yeah, he could play one year at Cal for a bunch of amateurs, or spend an extra year at UK playing with pros.  Pretty sure he made the right decision.

Poythress doesn’t always run the plays he’s supposed to and he can be found out of position on defense.  I wouldn’t  really call that underperforming. He was told not to drive and handle the ball. He didn’t underperform, he did what he was asked and played the role they gave him.

I’m just gonna play devil’s advocate for a second.

WCS is still 7 feet tall, and his stock is down. He’s being talked about in the 25-35 range right now, and unlike a lot of UK players, he’s not riding a stock bump due to his final 4 play because he was hurt. This isn’t a PJII or Sully situation where a coulple guys that are easy to pick apart forgo a lotto pick in a weak draft to ender a harder draft a year later. This is a raw as hamburger dude, who’s stock has slipped in a big way since Noel tore his ACL over a year ago.

Willie has NBA size and a trait that will not grow out of favor. Rim protection. He maybe hasn’t progressed on the offensive end the way many had hoped, but he got better at what he does best. WCS blocked .8 more shots per game in the same amount of minutes, with about the same amount of fouls. He also raised his FT percentage 11 points, for a barf worthy 37, to an awful 48, if he can raise it 10 more points his junior year…

WCS could have a season, based on his freshman to sophomore improvement, where he blocks over 3 shots and is close to a 60 % free throw shooter, which, sadly, is pretty decent for a young center prospect.

I don’t think he’s going to really raise his stock to being a lotto pick again, but I certainly think he can lock himself in the 14-20 range with a solid Junior season.

If you’re gonna get mad at him for passing up the money, then you should have been pissed a year ago when he would have gone in the lotto in a weak draft as a Frosh, but coming back for his Junior year, I think can be a positive thing for him. There is some risk involved, but this doesn’t really stick out as a "stupid" decision.

I agree with you on everything except the 14-20 range. UK’s frontcourt is going to be too loaded for WCS to have much of a year next season.

WCS is also a weird dude, who, if you’ve met him, totally seems like he could retire from basketball and start an organic garden.  The dude has hakuna matata tattooed on his neck for christ’s sake.  He probably doesn’t identify as a basketball player first, unlike many young athletes whose sole goal is to play professional sports.
