ReDraft the 2007 NBA Draft

The other day I saw on the ESPN insider page they were redrafting the 2007 NBA Draft and I wanted to see what yall would do. I tired to take into account what the teams were like back then bc there were a few blockbuster trades that draft, ie the BIG THREE, but this is what I think the lottery should have been:

Portland – KD
Seattle – Al Horford – They had no legitimate center. You could also go with Joakim Noah here.
Atlanta – Marc Gasol – They needed a center and Gasol would fit great here.
Memphis – They had Kyle Lowry, so they could go with Noah for a center with Pau Gasol.
Boston – Mike Conley would be a great fit here, Rondo was definitely not a houselhold name yet.
Milwaukee – Thaddeus Young – great combo forward for a team that needed youth.
Minnesota – jeff green – Would have been given so much freedom in this offense to develop
Charlotte – Aaron Affalo – good scorer for a team that could not score against the UCONN womens basketball team that won this year
Chicago – Aaron Brooks – good PG off the bench for them
Sacramento – Wilso Chandler – good scorer for a team that needed a replacement for peja
Atlanta – Corey brewer – good defeneder to make atlanta a tough defensive team
Phili – tiago splitter – good big to go with a team that needed height
New orleans – Jared dudley – good defender who can help stretch defenses with his three pt shot
LA Clips – Brandan Wright – Underrated center that could play well for a joke team like the Clippers were

i agree with your draft but just wanted to mention other notables from that draft.
1st rounders: spencer hawes, rodney stuckey, nick young, marco bellinelli, rudy fernandez
2nd rounders: carl landry, glen davis, josh mcroberts, ramon sessions
undrafted: mirza teletovic, gary neal, anthony tolliver
i could see any of these guys being included on the back end based on their careers and/or recent success.

You don’t think anyone of those teams would take a flyer on Greg Oden even if they knew what they know now? Some of his injuries have put into question the Blazers medical staff more so than Oden himself. If I’m Chicago in your scenario, I would totally give Oden a shot over trigger happy, defensive liabilty Brooks.

  If anyone knew by 2014 Greg Oden will have not played significant games/minutes to this point of his career, absolutely no one would have touched him in the top 10.
  If you want to blame the Blazers medical staff, go ahead, but the argument that "Wouldn’t a team take a flyer on a guy who got hurt his first 5 years in the league and then was literally out of the league due to injury for 2 years?" is not a very good one.

I’d probably go with Noah ahead of Horford for sure and probably Gasol. But aside from that I can’t disagree much. Conley took longer to come around than I expected but he has a shot to put up the best career numbers for anyone there not named Durant.
My question is how many people would have taken KD over Oden even back then? Oden was by no means the clear consensus…so who favored KD all along?

At the moment I would be tempted to put the more durable Noah ahead of Horford and certainly Gasol on Stevie’s original list.

I feel sad for Oden and Sam Bowie when I hear the word "bust" used against them. Both had so much talent and it was injuries alone that prevented them from being outstanding players.
Calling them a bust is no different to saying Jay Williams is a bust (motorcycle accident) or Len Bias is a bust (cocaine overdose) yet no-one does for some reason….

You can’t call Oden a bust. Injuries totally ruined his career. Guys his size with the skill level he had coming out of Ohio St don’t come around very often.

With regards to this years draft; I would not take Imbid over Parker or Wiggins just based on history. Taking a big over bigtime wing players doesn’t work out well. Imbid is no where near the prospect Oden or Bowie were.

    Did you watch Greg Oden at Ohio State? he helped lead them to a 35-4 record only to lose in the National Championship. In that game against Florida he outplayed Noah and Hortford even though Florida won the game. Oden had 25 pts, 12 rb, 4 blocks against two all star big men who were both a few years older as well. Embiid is a great prospect but not quite as good as Oden. I think people forget how great of a prospect he was just because of his career in the nba has been derailed by injuries. If Embiid was the prospect instead of Oden in the 2007 draft then Durant would of went first in my opinion.

      oh, i know how great he was. i believe he would’ve been among the top centers in the game today if his knees didnt betray him. my comment was not a slight to him. it was more towards Embiid and him being a legit Center prospect.
      Embiid’s upside is huge. he has all the tools to become the best center in the game. he’s not as advanced of a prospect at this age as Oden was, but his future outlook is just as bright.

        Second off, here is the thing people are missing with Embiid. The league is going away from back to the basket centers. If you look at any of the advanced metrics and true plus/minuses, the best big men in the league are basically all ones who can shoot, and then a few of the studs like Aldridge and Griffin.
        I’m not questioning Embiid’s potential skillset, but looking at Wiggins and Parker, building your team around a wing player just seems a lot smarter than building it around a center. There are very few centers who dominate with their offense. Gasol has a good skillset, but doesn’t put up huge numbers, Howard is a non traditional center who mostly uses his athletic ability, and guys like Noah and Hibbert are certainly not scorers.
        And beyond all of that, Embiid’s offensive game is still incredibly raw. I think you are getting a potential defensive ace rim protector, and I think he can be a decent piece for a team’s offense. But I don’t think people are considering where the league is going and how offense is being ran. It’s not the early 90s, it is an era where teams don’t just feed bigmen and get out of the way.

Kevin Durant was a tier above every prospect in this draft and Oden went ahead of him playing injured for half of his only year in college. I don’t think Embiid does a single thing better than Oden did at the same stage plus Oden was built like a tank.

  Not many circumstances where it was a 2 player draft between a big and a wing, but the point is, that it works out as often as it doesn’t, it is just that Oden & Bowie are brought up disproportionately.
  Not sure the teams who drafted Olajuwon, Mourning, Ewing, Duncan, Shaq, or even A.Davis worry about the big man curse.
