I’m kind of addicted to watching his highlight videos while trying to disguise my envy. He isn’t projected to be a one-and-done so he has no profile on this site yet.

I know highlight reels don’t tell the whole story, but my goodness. He is 6-4 with a solid build, he has range, vision, insane leaping ability, a great basketball IQ, and a polished midrange game. What a talent. I don’t know whether or not he defends, boxes out, gets after loose balls, or is physical enough for the NBA, but I’m looking forward to finding out.

Anyone have a best-case, worst-case, and reasonable-case comparison for him?

you know dunking in game is much different than a slam dunk contest.

Austin Rivers looked pretty athletic here http://www.youtube.com/watch

I feel Grayson Allen might be a similar type of athlete. I do like his game though.

     Grayson Allen= Shannon Brown

Both were MDAA- Shannon was #3 overall, so yes he was a better player than Grayson.

Both were in MDAA Dunk Contest- Grayson won, and to this day I still feel Brown should have beat Lebron in 03!

Both are great athletes- obviously both have sick verticals. Plus, both are finess dunkers that don’t really try to go through people.

Both are excellent shooters- Shannon Brown would go off for 5 plus 3 pointers in games ALL THE TIME. That is what every Allen mixtape looks like.

    6’3 to 6’4

Both were solid, but not great defenders in HS. Brown stepped it up under Izzo’s guidence, but at Provo East he was a star (but still wasn’t know for his defense). For Grayson everyone says, "Well, he’s not terrible" when talking about his defense.

I hate that people stick to only comparing white people to white people and black people to black people. With the exception of the color of their skin, I think this comparison is CLOSE, not EXACT…

I think it’s a good comparison but Allen isn’t on Brown’s level athletically. Good athlete in Allen. Great athlete in Brown. Also I think Brown was more of an explosive scorer than Allen. Also I think Brown was a little stronger.

Brown’s one handed off one foot Statue of Liberty 360 was one of the best dunks I’ve ever seen on any level. He got up, put it down hard and took off from 12-13 feet. Was insane. He was consistently better than Lebron but Lebron just had those power jams. JR Giddens was good too.

Also can see some similarities with Giddens

who won the dunk contest, is a lights out 3 point shooter and is going to Duke. And you compare him to Ron Baker?!?! He can barely get over the rim on his dunk attempts.

If you guys are going to be lazy and just pick white guys, then just call him JJ Redick and end the thread.

There hasn’t been a white guy with that much hops since Brent Barry!

No, I’m saying that because there is a lot of video out on him that shows him making passes to people who a lot of other players would not have seen or recognized were open. An awareness of where teammates are is a big part of basketball IQ. There’s also footage of him running P&R and he shows a great ability to speed up or slow down to freeze the defender guarding his teammate to create more space for his teammate. Those are things that require attention to detail and a good understanding of the game, hence, a good basketball IQ.

And you’re the one who brought up skin color, not me, so please do not accuse me of using that as the rationale for my comments.

Poor man’s Ray Allen. Similar builds, Ray is 6’5 ~200, but was more around Grayson’s 185 when he was coming out of UConn. Similar games, great shooters, but can put it on the floor and finish above the rim when given the chance. Not terrible, but middling defenders. I think Grayson will play a similar game to what Allen does, knock down lots of threes, and take it to the rack on occasion to remind everyone that he can get up.

For those that don’t remember, Ray wasn’t a jump out of the gym athlete, but he still had some up. He was in the 1997 dunk contest, can watch his dunks here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re_Nrc3JRII

I have watched 3 of Grayson Allen’s aau games live.  He won’t have the impact many of you expect IMHO.  He didn’t beat out D’angelo Russel for the 2-guard spot.  He was his backup.  As you all note he is an explosive athlete and good shooter, but is prone to disappear.  He doesn’t have a demanding presence on the court where he will draw the oppenents best defenders.  He has high upside but don’t expect him to make a splash until his junior or senior year.  I’d compare him to Andre Dawkins personally.  Of course I could be wrong (won’t be the first time nor the last) but I think he will be buried behind Suilaimon, Matt Jones, Quin Cook, Justice Winslow (now this guy OTOH will impact right away) and possibly Semi Olejeye in the wing rotation.  Even further down if Jabari stays.
