chrisinozParticipantShould teams such as Detroit/Minny/ Denver just stop trying to win for the rest of the season? They tried and failed to make the playoffs so is there any point in winning any more games apart from individual stats?

Lotto StudParticipantHard to say because this will bring up the "flawed" tanking/lottery talks again.

chrisinozParticipantI feel its slightly different to tanking, as the goal at the start of the season was to make playoffs ect. Detroit has a top 8 protected pick so surely they would want that pick as opposed to winning a few games that mean nothing and end up with the 9th pick ( Lottery could also change this too)

frogmanParticipantLearning to win now even though you can’t make the postseason seems more important than improving your 10th overall pick for the ninth. The T’wolves beat the Spurs tonight.

HitsterParticipantAll teams almost go into the same mode when they have positions secured:-
Lottery teams look to tank as much as possible, give the young talent as much playing time as possible.
Teams secure in the play off will push for best seeding but have one eye on resting their big guns for play off run especially in last few games.
Late Lottery teams as identified by Chrisinoz have nothing to play for so may rest best players to try and improve lottery chances slightly.
So we often see some strange line ups for the last few games of regular season.

aztwulfParticipantCannot improve, or decrease, their lottery position. They will be slated to pick 13th (prelottery) regardless of whether they win, or lose, ALL of their remaining games.
The Wolves have been playing hard, beating Memphis, Miami, and San Antonio, and losing only to Orlando (when Love was out with back spasms) in their last four games. I think in the case of the Wolves, they are trying hard to finish with a winning record.

OhCanada-ParticipantThose teams should not lose on purpose. They have been competing all year and working towards instilling the right intangibles as a unit to be successful. The way teams tank is not by trying to lose its by shedding salaries and acquiring shorterm project players that will lose in lineups. Teams dont tank by telling their teams to stop trying. Development and building a winning enviroment never stops. Those are expectations.
