No really, Darko Milicic has more potential than Carmelo Anthony – seriously – I’m not pulling your leg

I’ll be the first one to say Darko having more potential than Carmelo is obviously ridiculous, but that doesn’t mean Darko didn’t have great potential.  He just didn’t reach that potential, and a majority of the fault lies with the team that drafted him.

dumars didn’t work out. i don’t believe it was entirely his fault. the darko comment is funny, but the reality is that before the nba, darko was a highly regarded prospect with combine like skills that many other teams would have made the same mistake. melo should have been drafted higher, but there was no talk of bosh, wade, or anyone else being selected ahead of him, so that has to say something there.

unrelated topic (figured i could use this thread posted news instead of posting another thread)
not quite other news, but mixed rumors have been going around about calipari coaching the lakers. this started from rex chapman via twitter, and calipari denied it. i think calipari is a good coach, but not great coach. he’s the best recruiter in college basketball and a good motivator. i don’t think he has what it takes to coach in the league. just my opinion. what do you guys think? will he go to lala land? or stay with what he’s great at and stick with recruiting monster talent at kentucky? my guess is he’s staying, but it’s hard to see if it’s smoke screen or not.

you’re absolutely right, darko was still a highly regarded prospect, that probably would have been in the top 5 regardless in 2003.

that being said, dumars still put together a team that made 7 straight eastern conference finals and won a championship. still probably the worst GM ever at signing free agents.

The Lakers job and the success of the next coach is predicated on them getting THE STARS to come to rebuild LA.  The Lakers NEED Kevin Love, LeBron James, and a really good pick this year (which it should be).

John Calipari is a great RECRUITER and promoter.  I can see him making a run at Love and LeBron.  That’s the only chance the Lakers have (free agency).  If Cal can’t get those guys to LA I don’t think anybody can.

Then you have a solid pick (at worst) in this draft.  Now what if they get Andrew Wiggins to go with LeBron and Love?  That’s a heck of a team.  Coach Cal would be good for that job.  Motivate those guys, get them ready to play, put in some systems, and don’t overcoach.

I would rather coach LeBron, Wiggins, Love, and Kobe on his last legs than try to get AAA one and done classes at Kentucky EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

I think they should bring back Isiah Thomas to take his position. People dish our all the blame to Isiah for the knicks freefall, but I still believe Isiah is a good basketball mind who can make strong decisions. He’s a great drafter and I think he’ll have learned from his mistakes because he seems much more humble these last few years. Detroit doesn’t like going away from home-town heroes either.

Calipari had alot of talent in New Jersey and pissed it away. He cant "big time" people in the NBA like he does in college.

He sure went out with a bang in his last offseason. Signing two toxic, shot happy players, one with an especially terrible contract (J-Smoove). Passing on two backyard kids in Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. Hiring and firing Mo Cheeks in a matter of months. Drummond and Monroe are the only real positive things he has done in the past few years and he ruined it. He should  have had the foresight to put as many shooters as possible around those two to space the floor better. I know winning a championship buys you a certain amount of gravitas and time but he stuck around waaaaaay too long. And hiring Isiah would be such a bad decision. I don’t understand the logic. While he did do well as a drafter, he was worse with contracts and trades than Dumars. And that is hard to do. Look at his moves as the Knicks GM:

    – trading two 1st round draft picks for Starbury and a washed up Penny. 2004 pick turned into Luol Deng I believe. After getting Starbury, gave him a 4yr, $68mil extension. Towards the end, things soured so badly that he basically paid Steph $20mil to stay away from the team.

-trading for and signing perrenial fatty Eddy Curry to a fatty 6yr, $56mil contract.

-signing Jerome James to a 5yr, $30mil contract. Enough said

-trading for a washed up Steve Francis and his massive contract, and pairing his headcase with Starbury’s

-in 2006/07, had contracts of retired Allan Houston ($20mil), Jalen Rose ($16mil), Steph ($18mil), Stevie ($15mil) and Jamal Crawford ($7mil). This $66mil won them 33 games that year.

-the Larry Brown saga. Embarassing media circus ensued.

-his worst move of all: trying to holler at Anucha Browne-Sanders. $116mil paid out in damages.
