chall23ParticipantI’ve heard about this guy for a couple years now but he was more of like a myth than a player, A 7’3 center with a 7’9 wingspan with good mobility. He hasn’t played basketball for too long but he’s actually getting time now and opening eyes (from the article I read about him). My question to you guys is, have any of you seen him play? Do you think he’s a second round pick draft and stash, (like he’s projected)? Do you think a team bites on the size and potentially sneaks into the 1st round? Like I said I have not seen him play but these measurements are worth a legitamite look right?

HobbyOGParticipantCould be a first round pick and stash like the Hawks did BeBe last season. The Heat could take him late and make him stay overseas.

2quick4uParticipanti’m from spain so i’ve seen him play quite a few times and i can tell you he’s a real deal.. he’s still raw offensively and deffensively but heck he’s been playing BB for only 3 years and is already a key piece on his team! he is not only size and length, he’s also pretty agile and athletic for his size plus he’s got huge hands, great touch(75% FT), good timing and feel for the game..
he ain’t peter ramos or hasheem thabeet, believe me..i think there’s no player like him with his tools right now in the nba, other than may be rudy gobert but tavares is 2 inches taller and stronger already than him.. i think he can be better than hibbert and if he reaches his potential he could be something close to mutombo..
you can call me crazy but i think tavares is worth a mid 1st round even if he stayed in europe 2 more years, wich i think would be great for his development as he’s playing for a playoff team in the second best league in the world..

omphalosParticipantReally hoping the Celtics get him, we desperately need rim protection amd this guy looks like a better bet than WCS in that regard just based on his enormous length.

Jr. ROXASParticipantMan I think he’d be stuck in the doghouse if that happens. You guys just signed faverani, have sullinger and olynyk and bass as well as kris humphries who says he wants resign. I hope he goes to a team where he can get some playing time from his coach and slowly gain his confidence playing against nba backups.

TONYDABOSS77ParticipantI’d like him more if he were younger, he’s 22 & he’ll most likely be 23 or 24 before you even get him on an NBA court.

TONYDABOSS77ParticipantSorry for the double post, but along with his age, it seems that his greatest attribute is his size. I just don’t think you can afford to draft him in the first round, especially in this draft where it seems somebody will fall. His 75% from the line intrigues me though.

MopgrassParticipantHe’s got a barrel chest and needs to work out his arms, but really, really needs to work out the legs. YouTube doesn’t show any vertical at all in clips, so I hope he’s added something there.
He’s a non-offensive player, but if he’s added to his game, how do you go wrong with a 7’3″ kid. Having said that, he needs an incredible amount of work. I have seen elementary school kids with more basketball acumen… of course, none were 7’3″.

XYRYXParticipantHaven’t really seen much from him and there is only a limited amount of clips showing his game on the web. Btw his name is Tavares and not Taveras if you have trouble youtubing him like me.
His age combined with his limited basketball experience might scare some teams and I definetely wouln’t gamble on him in the 1st round but if he falls to the mid 2nd I would take him or do a minor trade for him. Personally I have no problems with older guys especially bigs, it’s not like the Hassan Whitesides of this planet are better players because they are younger come draft day. If expectations are too high like in Thabeets case things won’t come easy for guys like him or Tavares but why don’t let him play 1 or 2 more years in europe and bring him over then? Guys like him need to be coached and playing a significant role in one of the best leagues in spain won’t hurt his development.
He runs the floor very well and from what I’ve seen his hands are really good for a player his size. His timing and vertical game are not very good as of right now and he might be a Shawn Bradley type of poster boy if he doesn’t develope this part of his game. As of right now I wouln’t pick him of Nurkic who I think could be a Marc Gasol type of player on day!

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantI am of the belief that there is no reason why a team would not want to take him in the second round. He is in many ways another incarnation of Rudy Gobert. Much like with Gobert last year, I do not think he should be in the NBA soon. The skills aren’t there, the body is lacking strength, and he does not move laterally particularly well. It is not the end of the world for a giant 22 year old who is not especially experienced, but he is more of a giant than a basketball player at this point. He certainly needs more time to learn the game before stepping into the NBA. If he stays in Spain and gets more familiar with the game and allows his body to mature, he could turn into a player worth having. Even if he goes undrafted, he is still going to be someone on radars in the years going forward. Even though Timofey Mozgov, Miroslav Raduljic, Slava Kravtsov, Pero Antic, Alexis Ajinca, and Vitor Faverani are far from setting the NBA on fire, they are signs that NBA teams don’t give up on prospects (especially of big men) after the age of 22.
