He’s the greatest scorer I’ve ever seen, so smooth and consistent. He had 28 tonight and he really didn’t have a good game by his standards. I believe barring a career-threatening injury he’ll pass Kareem for #1 on the all-time scoring list when it’s all set and done.

Best pure scorer I have ever seen.  Literally no weaknesses on the offensive end.  If he stays healthy, he’ll break the all time scoring record easily.

One of the most underrated things about Kareem was his intense fitness regimine. He was able to play for a long time because of that and his diet.

Also, his hook shot was unstoppable and was always there. Not as easy for KD as you think. Though he is the guy with the best chance to do it.

KD is a phenominal talent. You look at a guy like Lebron, who is the best in the game, right now, and you say that guy was born to be an athlete…hence all this if Lebron could play football or hockey BS we always see on EPSN, but KD was born to play basketball.

I think his upside is as high as it gets as long as he stays healthy. He’s a cross between MJ and Dirk, with a flash of Bird. His D isn’t at the level it could be but, this kid is a major talent. As much as I respect Lebron James, it kind of feels like 5 or so years ago when Kobe was regarded by many as the best in the game, and Lebron was clearly the next in line.

I would’ve hated for him not to reach the milestone due to what happened after Adrian Peterson’s miraculous season.

Sorry to be boring, but I gotta go with MJ as the best scorer of all time. MJ would have led the league in scoring for 12 consecutive seasons if he hadn’t retired. Durant is probably a more well-rounded scorer in that he’s a better 3pt shooter and ft shooter, but I think MJ was better in the mid-range, post-ups and and driving to the hoop.

Durant is 6’9ish with more range than Jordan.  KD is averaging over 32 points per game in a slightly different league than MJ.  Would this be like scoring 35 or 36 points back in the day?  Maybe.

Durant COULD win 7 scoring titles (as many as Wilt) or 10 (as many as Jordan) which is pretty incredible.  I think he has the talent and all-around scoring ability.

Back to JoeWolf’s point, Durant has Jordan’s devastating scoring and Bird’s devastating shooting.  Heck of a combination.

You could one day say that Durant has been the Best Scorer in NBA history while also saying that Jordan is still recognized as the BEST PLAYER in NBA history due to more titles, better defense, etc.  You can separate scoring greatness from all around greatness.  So, Durant might be named the best EVER as far as scoring goes, without him being able to pass Jordan, Wilt, or even LeBron on the lists of BEST EVER.

Durant looks like a guy who should be among the 10 to 15 best players EVER.  How far up that ladder he climbs will depend primarily on rings.  There are some guys up there with LOTS of rings.  Looks like his baseline would be to end up as the third best small forward in NBA history behind Bird/LeBron.  Now Durant could obviously do some things to make that distinction pretty much a three way tie.

One day, the all-time starting five in terms of freakish, all around talent could be Magic, MJ, Durant, LeBron, and Wilt.

You also have to give Durant credit for taking an MVP award away from LeBron.

As for your larger point about KD playing in a different league than MJ, that is true. The pace was faster, on average, in MJ’s day. I’m not sure how to compare the different eras, but the idea that KD could score more then sounds very possible.

I think if KD adapts as he gets older, takes up yoga like Kareem did (don’t change your name to Keveem Abdul-Gaddar though) whatever to add a couple years, and then adds a killer non athleticism-dependent move, may I suggest a post fadeaway which would be deadly with that length, he could get that record, but it’s also possible that he slows down in his later years and becomes a Solid Veteran Who Gives You 17 A Game.

I think (and hope) he gets the all-time scoring record. The all-time greats have the talent to play until they’re 40 and KD loves the game so much that he’ll play as long as his body holds up. He doesn’t seem to be struggling with any injuries thus far in his career because he’s so light on his feet.

Even when his athleticism is lost he should still have the length to shoot over players like Dirk, so can’t see him being less than a 25ppg scorer until hes 37. That has to take him close to the record.

KD is one of the greatest scorers in the NBA today and his career to date ranks alongside many of the best scorers ever to play. I still think that beating Kareem’s record is a long way away. To put Kareem in context, if you add LeBron’s career points to KD’s they are still less than Kareem achieved. KD is in his 7th NBA season and LeBron his 11th so either would have to go at the other’s respective rate for that many years to get close to Kareem.

    Thank You!

Too many people don’t seem to realize the unreal consistency it would take to attain certain records. KD’s first seven seasons have been spectacular, probably 4 scoring titles and about 15,000 points after this season. He has also been fortunate enough to not have been affected by any injuries.

If his next 7 years are just as good as his first seven he will have about 30,000 points but he’ll be going into his 15th season and will be about 33 years old with about 1100 regular season games on his body and probably about 140+ playoff games too. His body will start to break down and his scoring will decrease, it happens to everyone. Even Kareem was averaging about 22 PPG by his 14th season at the age of 35. Saying KD will average 25 PPG until he is 37 is generous at best.

He’ll still need another 8500 points or so. It is certainly possible but he’ll need to stay healthy, continue being the focal point of his team’s offense and play at an All-Star level until he is 37 or 38. It’s nowhere near a probability and saying that he’ll break the all-time scoring record “easily” is absurd.

Very good point by ItsVO and what I said above about players needing to play for many more years to get near to Kareem’s figure. Plus you have to factor in injuries which may occur along the way. Kobe had been virtually injury free for the majority of his career but only played 6 games this season so the chances are players will miss chunks of their career at sometime. Hopefully it will not be a serious Kobe or D-Rose type injury but players with lon careers will miss a certain percentage of games due to minor injuries and those games mount up slowly over a career and perhaps cost the players 500 to 1000 points long term.

     Scary thought:

He still has room to improve.

I love KD and think about this, he doesn’t have much of a post game yet.  I bet that the minute Dirk retires, KD will hire him to help develop his post game.  If he can get that fade away that Dirk loves, he will be unguardable until he is 40.
