DP2005ParticipantWhen I see Wiggins I see Rudy Gay. All the length and athleticism that coaches salivate over. But that killer instinct that leads to championships just isn’t there yet. He needs to bulk up and tighten that handle and work on that jump shot. I’d hate him to turn out like Rudy Gay. Too much talent

Magic JordanParticipantUnlike Rudy Gay Wiggins doesn’t take the worst statistical shot in basketball (long 2 pointers) like they are worth 6 points much like Rudy does.
Wiggins seemed completely comfortable playing within a system. Really nothing like Rudy Gay besides from an athletic stand point and even that is only vertically. Endline to endline Wiggins is by far the superior athlete.
I understand the concerns about him not being aggressive but sometimes I feel like these kids can’t win. Rip a kid because he doesn’t shoot enough or prefers playing the team game…. My how basketball has changed.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantI don’t think wiggins understands a team concept. In a team concept you carry your team when you have to.

LitteringAnd…ParticipantFirst, that statement is a contradiction in terms – and Wiggins has been nothing but a team player all year, and when Embiid went out he did just that with a 40 point game!
I’ve been thinking of posting on Wiggins for a bit but Magic Jodan has nicely summed up my thoughts:
A) the Rudy comprison is way off, he’s a chucker, well has been most of his career, and he’s bigger; a diferent kind of atheltic to Wiggins who has a slighter frame and is lightning down the floor.
B) Prospects like him can’t win; if you don’t take over and carry your team then you’re too passive. But if you try to carry them chances are you miss a lot of shots and get labelled a chucker who forces things.
C) the college system and particularly big team like the Js are built to win championships with the everchanging pieces they have, not showcase NBA talent. I just don’t get so many of the knocks on him. I think he looks great playing the role he’s been give at Kansas. He is an atheltic freak and has all the tools to develop a great two-way game. I love that he’s taken a team role, it tells me he’ll listen to a coach, work hard to learn and most importantly not be another waste of talent who disrupts his teams game (Josh Smith, JR Smith, Swaggy, Rudy).
D) I think the suggestion that he doesn’t dominate enough at this level when he’s clearly being asked to play as part of a team offense is ludicrous. I think he’s a great prospect and the only one better than him has the same sort of upside and 4 more inches.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantIt’s not a contradiction in terms. Team player = you do what you have to do to win. If you are passive and you’re team loses you are selfish. I hate it when people advocate a players image over their team’s winning. Do you think Greg Popovich cares about his IMAGE?

baller77ParticipantTaking only 6 shots in a win or go home game is just not going to do it when you are the most talented player on a team like he was on kansas.
He has all the talent in the world but im hesitant to say he will be a star because of his habit to simply disapear from games.
I honestly would liked to have seen him go 2 for 14 then 1 for 6. At least then i would know he tried to put the team on his back when they really needed him. And they did with Embiid out.
In the syracuse game you saw Ennis triy to win the game twice at the end. Sure he probably should have gone to the basket instead of shooting the three at the end, but I appreciate his willingness to put the game in his hands. Wiggins needs a similar mindset.

OhCanada-ParticipantEven if Wiggins doesnt become a 23-ppg player he wont just end up being Rudy Gay. Wiggins will be an elite man to man defender at the wing position and at the very least a great third option for a great team.

Land of GrantParticipantWiggins is springier and has much better all around quickness, as well as a solid mid-range game which doesn’t involve pointless jab steps and ball-stopping. One thing that struck me is that he would always get his points within the flow of the offense, if it was stagnant, he’d try to create, he would throw entry passes, he’s attack the rim if his defender was winded or rotating, and shoot if open. Guys like Gay don’t respect the offense that they’re a part of.
I’m not saying that Wiggins is timid and doesn’t look to take over, although that is a legitimate criticism for him, I’m saying that when he does get the ball, he always does what would be natural for the offensive system with it.
Young players that don’t try to do enough are far more encouraging than middle-aged (from an athletic trajectory standpoint) players that try to do too much.

justymlParticipantI agree I called that a ways back..once he tightens up that handle and ger his jumper together….rudy gay is an elite athlete but doesn’t really have that killer mentality like wiggins..superstars are born with a mindset that they have to be the best and work their way to get there along with their gifts and honestly i don’t think wiggins is there mentality he often acts like he doesn’t care thats what I get from him.

OhCanada-ParticipantYou really have to watch Rudy Gay a couple times to understand the difference. Not just one or two games highlight films. Or your favourite teams highlights vs Sacramento. You gotta watch him consistantly he takes out of the flow shots which kills any team chemistry. From 20 foot contested jumpshots to 4 foot jumpshots, he stops the ball, kills momentum that his team builds…he is just a complete rolemodel for how not to play his position.
Skills wise he is on par with anybody in the league all around top 15 talent but he does not play with any fundimentals.
The height, wingspan, athletisism, and skills, may or may not be similar. But the mental approach to how to win a basketball is not. Rudy Gay has learned and seems to believe he needs to take 30 shots from the outside to win a game, Wiggins is still learning.

jwall1ParticipantI feel that its likely that he could have a career similar to Rudy Gays (borderline allstar with allstar potential), but I really dont see too many similarities besides their physical attributes. Wiggins is obviously more athletic, and completely polar opposite in terms of taking shots. Gay takes way too many shots while Wiggins at many times does not. Wiggins is still a raw prospect offensively (struggles with his iso game and finishing at the rim [due to his lack of strength]), but defensively he is good and IMO he has to potential to be a better defender then Gay…

MopgrassParticipantI think Wiggins has a very good jump shot, but he looks nervous or self-conscious thinking about it. He never knows when to shoot it and doesn’t have a sense for what is in rhythm or what is the right time. I’m not sure if that’s something that will sort itself out after a while in the NBA or what. My thought is he just needs to get comfortable under the spotlight.
I really like his mid-range shot. That’s already gold.

ibe12ParticipantTrying to compare Wiggins is pretty tough but I don’t see Rudy Gay. He’s probably the toughest guy in this whole draft to figure out because we’ve seen him have some really good games where he’s being aggressive and we’ve some games where he doesn’t seem interested. He also had many games where you think he didn’t do anything and you look at the box score and he had like 18 pts. and 8 rebounds. I really didn’t like how coach Self used him at all but I think Wiggins biggest problem is he’s too nice. Every all star player has a selfish side to them. He can come in the league right now and average 15 pts.a game but unfortunately for him that won’t be good enough because of the expectations. No matter where he goes I hope the fan base realizes he’s not a finished product. I personally don’t think he or anyone else in this draft are franchise players (except Embiid if he stays healthy) but he can be a perennial all star which isn’t a bad thing.

ropeParticipantRudy Gay has averaged consistently averaged 19 -20 points a game and is making almost $18 million a year. Why does everyone act like he is a bust? I know Wiggins has more hype, but Gay is carving out a pretty good career stat line.
