There is absolutely no doubt that Phil Jackson was able to coach two very talented teams to NBA titles. He did a great job in the capacity of coach of Michael and Kobe. He knows how to manage players and mold talent into championships.

The question is would he be a good person to have final say in all matters which this article says.

    http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2014/3/9/5487272/phil-jackson-knicks-front-office-serious

He doesn’t want to live in New York so he is going to be a outside observer who they are giving final say to? How can someone have a feel for how a team is interacting if they are not near the team? I realize it may be a case of addition by subtraction if this is to get the owner out of the way. I can see why he may still have some name appeal. I realize Pat Riley has made the move from the bench to the front office but not sure being a great coach automatically makes one a good front office man. It is NY so there are benefits that other places do not have. I realize he is a former Knick player. Is this just a ploy to use his name? I know he would not take a front office job in someplace like Milwaukee of Minny but does anyone think he has such a great basketball mind that he could turn those teams around?

I think this is nothing more than a PR move by the Knicks.  They are such a mess right now from a salary cap and personnel perspective that they are doing what they can to save face with Phil.  And, as  you note, Phil is a coach and not a GM so it certainly is an open question as to how he would adjust to the man making all of the decisions for the Knicks.  Not to mention, his health is not great and running the Knicks is a more than full time job.

Part of me thinks it is Phil playing games to get a gig with the Lakers.  He is not above this type of power play.  However, I am not going as far as Bill Simmons yesterday when he said on national TV that he thought this was a money grab by Phil.

Dont get caught up in the hype people he advised the Pistons to hire Mo Cheeks, who lasted about 10 games with the Pistons…..If he’s not coaching idk what he can do. Melo should Leave (Bulls, Bobcats (stretch 4 in that lineup would be great) Memphis (for Zach Randolph) are my top 3.

If Phil Jackson were to coach the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony would be more likely to stay.  Or, better, yet, the Knicks could take a run at LeBron James.

That is one plausible scenario for Phil Jackson.

Another, would be to coach the Cavs if LeBron goes back to Cleveland.  He would have LeBron, Kyrie Irving, and some other guys to work with.

Or, the Thunder if they don’t make the Finals and if they want to move away from Scott Brooks as a head coach.

I would like to see Phil Jackson coach a younger team that he could mold into a title contender, like the Orlando Magic if they got to pair Andrew Wiggins with Victor Oladipo.  That would be really fun to watch.

It’s never safe to assume that a great player or great coach is gonna make a great front office exec.

Phil knows how to win and that is what the Knicks need. How he’ll do running a front office, we don’t know but his coaching record was second to none and don’t forget that Red Auerbach who also became a great GM.

Phil will have huge contacts and experience and I’d back him to put the right team in place around him plus he is a drawing point for any potenial FA’s in 2015 and helps their chances of keeping Melo maybe.

Personally I don’t think Phil would ever coach again unless with the Lakers as he is now 68 years old, has had health issues and has been away from the bench for 3 years. But the chance to build a team and appoint is own men must appeal to him.

The one thing I do think Phil will do is hire high quality front office and coaching staff if he does make changes and they will all buy into his ideas. If he gets the right people in place then it makes his own job much easier.

I really don’t know what to expect about this move by the Knicks and I don’t really get what kind of advisor Phil Jackson now should be to this club but we’ll se and this should be at least exciting in NYC where nothing is forever…

What I find more interesting about this move of Phil Jacksons is Kobes reaction to this. You should definetively give this video below a look if you have 10 mins of time. This video is from the press conference 2 days after the Lakers announced Kobes season ending diagnosis. Amongst others he said the following:

The Lakers organisation needs a clear leadership at the top (what is true but very honest) and a decision what they want to do with Mike (D’Antoni)

That he doesn’t have the patience to wait another year for the last run to scku again next year (what is honest)

That he wants the Lakers to go all in this summer to make moves bringing in a competetive group

… he doesn’t want to say them who they should bring in but he at least espects them to call him personally when moves were made! (see Steve Blake trade and is a huge slap in the face to his boss)

His job is to be on the court and perform and that is what he is going to be expected …  … and the same can be said about the front office

    AND LADIES AND GENTLEMEN

That he can’t believe that (that Phil was not signed to the Lakers) something like that can’t happen twice. He meant that Phil was up for grabs and the Lakers didn’t sign him. He said that this is really hard to explain.

The reason why I think the Buss family doesn’t do this is because Phil might have the club and the bosses in his hands and they would be out of the picture.

You should really take some minutes on this one and the conversation in the studio with Shaq and Kamla was nice as well. Shaq backed Kobe up and understands what getting it started again means for him. The window is clearly closing now and he wants to compete which is okay and a healthy Laker organisation should grab this by the neck to make them relevant again.
