     Against my better judgement…

Cavs acquire Greg Monroe, Charlie Villanueva

Pistons acquire Luol Deng, 2nd rd pick (Pick from: ORL ’14, MEM ’14, CLE ’14 or ’15)

Cavs get the post presence they desperately need, Charlie V comes along for the ride for salary reasons. Pistons get a legit 3 and are able to slide Smith to the 4. Deng allows Smith to work on the inside/mid range instead of chucking 3’s and long 2’s. I didn’t know which pick would make it most fair for both sides so I just listed them.

I’m sure Detroit would rather keep Monroe but they could lose him in RFA if someone is willing to over pay, and I don’t think its too hard to over pay a quality big man. On the other hand, their current lineup is too crowded and Monroe’s contract is more moveable than Smith’s.

     Pistons idea:

Josh Smith, Bynum, and a second rounder for Gerald Green, Emeka Okafor, and a late first rounder

Detroit: builds for the future and dumps the bad signing in Smith

    Jennings – KCP – Green – Monroe – Drummond

    Billups – Stuckey – Singler – Jerebko/Mitchell – Harrelson

Phoenix: gets a solid player who can run the floor with their guards and can rim protect and a solid defender

    Bledsoe – Dragic – Smith – Morris – Plumlee

    Bynum – Goodwin – Tucker – Morris / Frye – Len

That would open up a trade to move Tristan Thompson, unless they play Monroe at C.

Think the Cavaliers will trade Luol Deng for Harrison Barnes and the Warrior’s Richard Jefferson trade exception?

yeah, i bet the cavs would make that trade in a heartbeat.  no way golden st. would take that though.  i don’t think deng would be happy playing off the bench and basically there is no way they could re-sign him.  they’d basically be giving harrison barnes away when he is probably one of the hottest names on the trade market.

word is if barnes is moving, so is david lee’s contract.

I think the Pistons are probably trying to see if anyone will take Smith before they trade Monroe. I love a Monroe + Villaneuva for Deng trade for both sides. Dengs probably gone at the end of the year, but at least Monroe will be a restricted free agent so the Cavs can match any offer. Deng gives the Pistons the spacing they need.

As a Cavs fan I would do this trade in a heartbeat but it’s highly unlikely the Pistons would be up for it.  If I was the GM I would even be willing to include top 5 protected pick and maybe another pick to make this happen.

It’s impossible to get a pick after 5 to play as good as Monroe will over the next 4 years.

These teams are "competing" for the 8th seed though and unless Dtroit is in full tank mode then this ain’t happening. I would give a completely unprotected 2014 pick if I were Cleveland.

I must admit I was ready to neg you, but as a pistons fan I would like this trade(+1). Also, I agree with you that some team is going to overpay monroe this offseason (__Insert_WASHINGTON WIZARDS_here).  But part of me believes that Luol Deng will bolt someone after this season (ala Jose Calderon) so we’ll just have him for half a season, but still gives us some cap. Only thing I would add in this trade is to include another guard, pref. CJ Miles. The pistons could finally lock themselves in the playoffs this season. However, in the off season they have their work cut out for them. And I still would like to see Aaron Afflalo in a pistons uniform, if they can get him by deadline as well. He is the pistons missing piece at the SG spot, and he is attainable without losing Monroe or Smith.

But to have a lineup of

    Jennings-Afflalo-Deng-Smith-Drummond

That lineup should solve the pistons perimeter problems, temporarily. As well as cover up Brandon Jennings defensive liabilities too.
