Supposedly Lakers and Suns have been recruiting teams into a Gasol trade. Lakers want to try to get a valuable play in return and not picks.

They have approached Philly and Cleveland in a deal that would send:

    Turner and Hawes to Cleveland.
Emeka Okafor, a phoenix 1st rounder, and 2nd rounders from Cleveland(2) and LA(1) to Philly.
Loul Deng to Lakers as well as a future 2nd rounder from Phoenix.
    Gasol to the suns.

Every player in the deal is on expiring contracts, but all would be target to resign except for Okafor.

Interesting. I wonder which of Phoenix’s first rounders was discuses I this is true. Also, would the sixers need to sign someone since they’re sending out two players and getting none in return?

I really like this for the Cavs, they found out they’re a long way from ready to compete and a bit of a mini-rebuild is needed. So Deng needs to go because they won’t want to pay him in the summer and they get some nice pieces without giving up a 1st.

Not sure wether Phoenix is ready for Gasol, I know they’re in a nice spot now but I’m just not sure if this makes them good enough to really compete in the west and the danger is they get stuck in a perenial 7/8th seed spot, never getting any higher.

This year with the Cavs and NO has really illustrated that you need to not rush rebuilds, it’s ok to suck for a bit longer, even if you’re not still in a top 10 pick spot you can still add pieces. Team really need to know the pieces are all there before you start talking about playoff runs and trading for vets/singing free agents. Too many teams want to win-now, get off the bottom for the fans and end up selling themselves into the dreaded middle-ground (yes I’m looking at you Milwaukee).

I get the move for Phoenix. They essentially get  Gasol for a pick that’s 19th-30th.

Cleveland gets some depth and are more likely to resign Hawes or Turner than Deng, while still having some kind of shot at the playoffs.

Philly only gets a middling 1st rounder and the possibility of resigning Okafor next year for both Hawes and Turner? I’m not sure about that.

The Lakers getting Deng for Gasol would be like Christmas for them. It’s a much lower salary, there’s a large presidence set for his trade value in terms of what they could get for him, and he could be traded again to get young chips (Bobcats?) and get even closer to the cap line.

…it would only conclude the greatest tank job in nba history by the 76ers.  but seriously, when you lose to golden st. by 40+ and let speights score 32 at full strength; there’s really not much hope….

Who doesn’t love sticking it to a former team.  According to Collins he didn’t hit the boards or D up so was dumped for nothing.  Funny – he’s turned that lack of skill into a long NBA career

I wonder what would be the Lakers end game in that situation?  They don’t get under the tax but turning Gasol into Deng would be pretty big if they had no intent to keep him.  Deng definitely holds more value than Pau.  I like the idea of flipping him right away to a team like the Bobcats for picks.  I don’t like the idea of him finishing the year with the team just to hold onto his bird rights and potentially sabotaging the Lakers lottery pick chances by 2 or 3 seeds.

From an objective stand point it looks pretty good for everybody involved.  I don’t really like this move from the Lakers stand point if they intend on keeping Deng because he will cut into their caproom significantly, and it just smells of the type of move that dooms teams to mediocrity.

It would depend on which Phx. round 1 pick it is, and also which of the Cav’s 2nd rounders is on the table. If the date is Feb. 20th and Hinkie doesn’t have a better offer he may take it regardless

I think it’s just that he’s the only Cavs player that can be involved in a trade in order to be traded again.

I plugged it into the trade machine and it worked. They usually stop you if something’s wrong. It did note that he can’t be traded with someone else, but it was a successful trade.
