storm33ParticipantI am a Pistons fan, and I was just thinking about the fact that the Pistons have 4 draft picks in next week’s draft, 3 of which are second rounders.
I think it would make sense to pick former Florida guard Nick Calathes because clearly the Pistons will not sign all 4 guys to the team, so why not make a pick for the future? Calathes, who of course will play in Greece next year, has a low buyout and will probably make his way to the NBA in the next year or two.
Also, Rodney Stuckey hasn’t lived up to expectations so maybe Calathes, with experience from Greece in hand, could be the point guard of the future for the Pistons.

birdman113i agee they should take Calathes in the second round if they can.

gatorheelsParticipantCalathes is going in the 1st round. If the Pistons want him they have to pick him at 15 which I actually think would be a smart move. Calathes is a top 5 PG in this draft.

pman23ParticipantI think they should take Calathes because Rodney is more of a 2 Guard. With Calathes experience I think he would help the Pistons.

draftnikParticipantI like the Calathes pick. If he can develop anything that resembles a defensive game and find his way into a weigh room, he can be one of the top PG’s from this draft class

pistonsmanParticipantThe Pistons either have to take him at #35 or #39 but is that a little high. I have him going #42 to the Lakers. Will he be around when #44 rolls around i would say no. But you never know anything could happen he could get picked in the early second round.

Tim49461ParticipantActually seems DON”T take foreign players in the first round because of that…U haven’t seen the last few drafts yet have u….every person says why take him in the first round (u have to pay him money and he wont play) when u can get him in the second ( not pay him and let him develop then sign him).
Look up some stuff before u talk children, your opinion does not make it right.

gatorheelsParticipantActually you don’t have to pay him anything if he stays overseas for the first year even if you take him in the 1st round. For a team looking to save money they will take an international player in the 1st round.

maravich44ParticipantHe would be a stel in 2nd round. I would take him in aheartbeat there. He won’t fall however. Pistons don’t have the luxury of drafting a plyer who will not help them immediately unless they blow up team. Wallace, Hamilton and gang have age. Team has short window. Nick will be a very good pro, but has to be taken by team that doesn’t need help right away.

Don’t pay attention to recent drafts? Let’s go back to 2007…picks 24, 28, and 30 (which, incidentally is near the range of Nick Calathes), Rudy Fernandez, Tiago Splitter, and Petteri Koponen. ALL first rounders. ALL stayed abroad. Rudy Fernandez just had a successful rookie year after taking this route, and in fact, Portland may just be the team to snag Calathes in the first round.
2006 draft? #17 Oleksiey Pecharov and #30 Joel Freeland. So on and so forth. Bottom line: often, teams DO draft foreign players in the first round knowing that they will stay abroad for a while. Moreso, Calathes has American basketball experience which makes him a more attractive candidate. Also, Calathes has a MUCH lower buyout than say, Ricky Rubio which makes bringing him over less of a financial burden.
In conclusion, you DON’T have to pay a player if he waits a year to enter the NBA. So calling out supposed “children” when you don’t even use proper grammar, spelling, or basketball knowledge makes you look like the child. (btw i am in college).

The MantisParticipantFrom what I have read, Calathes’ Greek contract can actually be bought out before he ever plays a game over there. And the buyout figure is relatively low. So, IF an NBA team wanted him to play for them this year it is indeed possible. If a team is willing to make that buyout and have him play this year, I think he could go in the top 20. If a team is not, then look for one of the teams that has multiple 1st round picks to take him late in the 1st and keep him overseas for a year. If I remember correctly, his contract in Greece is only for one year, anyway.
