Which player do you think will be better short term/long term? I’m also curious what you all think their NBA comparisons are, as the site doesn’t currently have any listed. Happy New Year to all my homies on this site!

Short term, I’d say Rodney Hood. Long term, I’d go with James Young. Both guys are lefties, which I feel slowly but surely we’re starting to more and more of each year. Both guys have very smooth games too. Hood definitely is more efficient at this point, but Young is only a freshman so I’d expect to see that get better with age.

I’m not usually too good with coming up with comparisons for players. I usually do better just evaluating their strengths and weaknesses but as far as NBA comparisons, I think James Young has Michael Redd listed as a comparison but doesn’t have a rating for him. I’d assume this is pre-injury Michael Redd and I’d tend to agree with something along those lines. Young still has a ways to go before he’s the shooter that Redd was but the tools are all there. Plus he’s probably more athletic than Redd was too so the potential could ultimately be even higher.

For Rodney Hood, I saw a Michael Finley comparison on another site. I’m not sure if I really agree with that as I don’t know if Hood will ever be the type of playmaker that Finley was during his prime years, but I can see parts of it from an athletic and size standpoint. Another comparison that I saw was Danny Granger. Again, I don’t know if I really agree with that comparison either as I don’t know if Hood can ever be the scorer that Granger once was. I think a combination of those two with a little less scoring ability would be an appropriate comparison for Rodney.

I like both prospects and they will both be lottery picks in whatever draft they come out but there is a 5% chance that either player has the career numbers of Micheal Finley or Micheal Redd. I don’t think together combined they will make half as much money as Redd or Finley made in their careers. Young and Hood may have between them one NBA All Star game tops.

Those former NBA All Stars may be there ultimate maximum potential ceiling but their floors are Wes Johnson for Hood and Wanye Ellington for Young.

This is not a diss IMO, but a actual fair comparison of floor and ceiling.

I actually agree with you. Those comparisons were kind of my ceiling projections for them. I always like to give prospects the benefit of the doubt in what they can develop into. I will say though that I think Young has a much better chance of reaching an All Star level than Hood does.

Once I really thought about it Hood’s floor is closer to Martell Webster than Wesley Johnson.

From what I’ve seen, which isn’t THAT much, Hood seems like the more pro-ready player. Young looks like he has more room to grow, and a little more explosive. His smooth offensive game combined with his quickness and solid explosiveness make him intriguing to me. That said though, he needs to improve upon his shooting numbers which I’m sure he’ll do sooner or later this season. For now though, I don’t think you can go wrong with either.

Also, Hood looks like the more all around scorer. Young seems to be more of a slasher and spot up shooter at the moment. Can’t really comment on his shot creating abilities since I haven’t seen as much as I need to.

I’ve watched Rodney Hood twice this year and he made things happen whether he was the focal point or not. It makes me think he could be a really good teammate. He doesn’t try to outdo Jabari, he works very well with him. He’s also entirely consistent. There aren’t a lot of 6’8" guys who can drive with a 53%FG, 42%3PT, 83%FT while averaging 17 points. A lot to like.

Rodney Hood is more of a safe bet? I think because of his size and skillset, he could be a fairly valuable NBA complimentary player. I don’t think most people have him pegged to be a star, but he is pretty much solid in ever category and can really help spread the floor.

I would rather take the guy who played under Coach K — all else being equal.

rodney hood..short term and long term…hes slightly just a better player and has a prototype nba body…could help a team out off the bench…..young is very very talented, on the other hand, there are a million guys just like him…if he was shooting better from 3(his biggest strength) then my opinion might be different. But if im choosing 1 of these guys in the nba draft im going with hood, no question

Hood is older he could almost be looked at as a juniour. Obviously he sat out last year but he was involved in practice and weight training etc for a whole year in the Duke program not tomention his time at MSU. He’s juust alot more seasoned. I dont know how many of yuo saw him at MSU but he was very similar to Young now. He lit that stacked Kentucky championshipteam up during the first half of one of there matchups
