Just as the team started to click, Lopez breaks his foot and is out for the remainder of the season. I’m guessing they’ll go with KG at the 5 and Blatche at the 4. Is this a team that can still turn it around and make the playoffs?

I kind of feel a little guilty. Being a Hawks fan, and since we have the right to swap picks with Brooklyn this year, I’ve been watching every game and pulling for them to lose. Just recently I said "I just wish they lost Deron or Brooke for the year." I guess I should have instead said "I wish I won the lotto this year."

You beat me by 1 minute, so I’ll post in this thread.

Another tough blow for Jason Kidd and the Nets. It’s looking like Brook Lopez is about to have a similar career to Yao Ming.

     Terrible news.

They start KG at center (where he will play better than he has at PF) and they start Mirza at PF. Blatche probably stays as backup center (where he will get a lot of minutes due to KG’s minute restrictions). Eventually AK will come back and he will add some good depth.

Oden, Bynum, Lopez… and even D12′ back… is there a curse against best american centers?

Something tells me KG wishes he went to the Clippers now. I feel bad for Brooklyn because they haven’t even had a chance to showcase what they could do. Atleast Celtics fans saw their starting 5 win a title before pulling out the "Never lost a playoff round with our starting 5 healthy." Net’s fans might not even see this core reach the playoffs, and that’s depressing.

If the rest of the core can stay healthy though, then I do feel like they can make the playoffs. Once AK47 comes back they will have a multitude of small-ball lineups they can run with, and still have a lot of good vets on the team. Right now it’s about staying healthy, and finding the best group of guys to put on the floor at the same time. If they can do that, then I don’t see why they couldn’t be a decent second half team. Not title contenders like a lot of us thought at the begining of the year, but an fun team to watch never the less.

I do feel bad for Brook though. He was starting to grow into the center of their offense, and even seemed to be playing better D this year. I hope he can come back and stay healthy like Bogut did before him. Bogut had a similar injury I believe, and it took him a few years to get right, but even he seems to be on the right track.

It’s crazy because just last night after their OT loss to the Sixers I was writing on a Hawks blog about how the Nets schedule to close out December and open up in January is brutal with THREE away games @Indiana @San Antonio and @Oklahoma. Their January schedule is a mixed bag but I threw out there that if Williams or Lopez had any nagging injuries or missed time it could become really difficult for them to turn it around towards the end of the season. Then earlier today I saw the news on ESPN, and like you said being a Hawks fan this is secretly the best news you could get, because as it stands we might actually both lock up a playoff spot and be in the lottery in a very deep draft. On the other hand seeing another big man go down to a foot injury or any kind of injury is tough, and hopefully he comes back next year fully healthy and playing well.
