Can Nik Stauskas make the L?

From what I’ve seen, he’s clearly added a lot to his game. His ballhandling is a lot better, allowing him to create shots, his defense has improved, and he’s become a very solid finisher, including a couple nice dunks (!). He definitely has NBA SG size. Can he be a successful NBA player?

  He’s 6’6", and he can shoot. Last time I checked, Jimmer Fredette, Kyle Korver, and Danny Green are still in the league.
  In the NBA, all you need is one GREAT talent to make the league. Nik has that talent.

yep hes big for a wing and is a lights out shooter. if korver can sign a big ol extension every year staukas will make the league.

Of course he can. If you’ve actually seen him and play and don’t just assume he’s your typical white three-point sepcialist wing player, then you’ll know that, in addition to shoot the three, he can drive it very well. Yes, he won’t be particularly effective at driving in the NBA, but he has all the tools that many passable guys have, plus he’s deadly from 3. Like BBnB said above, he’s big for a shooting guard so it’s not like he’d be much of a liability anywhere on the court.

Stauskas is actually a pretty darn good athlete too…He can sure shoot it…I don’t see why he wouldn’t get at least a shot

I think he can. Not only is he a lights out shooter, but he’s shown that he can actually put the ball on the deck and make plays if teams run him off the line which makes him more than just a catch shoot guy.
I think he’d struggle defending NBA SGs though. I think he’d have a better chance trying to defend SFs.

I think his handle was fine last year too, he just had to play all the time off the ball with Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway, so he didn’t have many chances to show his ball skill. He still managed to be the best player in big 10 in PPP as a pick and roll ball handler (here’s the source: http://www.umhoops.com/2013/05/21/report-card-2013-nik-stauskas/). He’s definitely added strength and muscles, so he’s improved driving and finishing. While I don’t know if he can bring that to the Nba, he certainly could be a good and valuable secondary ball handler, like JJ Redick has been in some situations in recent years (not this year because playing with Chris Paul he’s not asked to do a lot in terms of ball handling) and also has the ability to hit pull up jumpers after one or two dribbles. He has a chance not only for his outstanding shooting ability, this kid has clearly a great passion for the game and work ethic. If he continues to play like this for the whole season and he adds a thing or two to his offensive game (some fakes, perfecting his footwork on triple threat situations, moving more off the ball) and keep working on D he might have a chance as early as next year.

JJ Reddick is in the league as a shorter and less athletic combo guard and has been starting for a good team. I don’t see why Stauskas can’t. If he works hard he has the talent.

  Don’t forget, in college, he was averaging 30 PPG on the best team in the nation his senior year.

    Oh I’m not trying to sell JJ short but he isn’t athletic and wasn’t really a guy that could handle the ball and be a playmaker for others until recently. JJ was great in college but greatness in college doesn’t always translate to productive NBA player. JJ worked hard and made it after treading that thin line for a few years. It’ll take work for Stauskas but it took work for a guy like Reddick as well. Point is it can be done. He can be a good player in the L.

      Redick has developed very nice ball handling skills, he’s one of the best in the league moving off the ball and coming off screens, he has great fundamentals (his footwork is amazing and it allows him to create separation or to blow by his man, especially on curls, though he’s not that quick), he has a lot of crafty moves (pass or shot fakes) that allows him to score with decent efficiency close to the basket even if he’s unathletic and with T-Rex arms. He’s also improved a lot as a defender, and while he doesn’t have great lateral quickness nor size, he puts a lot of effort, he has a very good awareness and plays sound team defense, so he’s not a minus defender even with his physical limitations. Stauskas can model his game after Redick’s, but still has a long way to go. Redick has put on a lot of work after getting in the Nba, has added many things and changed drastically some parts of his game (for an example the way he steps off screens) and he was a dominant player in college.

Elite shooters always have a place in the league. He likely won’t ever start, but he can contribute off the bench as a 3 point gunner.
