MalcolmxParticipantKid has Legit size. He was Measured at a skills academy at 6’9.5 and 7’0 wingspan. Standing reach looks high as well. Probably in the 9′ to 9’2 neighborhood.( just a guess). Just 18 years of age. Needs to shed some weight and get in better conditioning but he moves pretty well for a guy pushing 290 pounds. I know he isn’t a bouncy athlete but he can play the game the way it’s supposed to be played. He keeps the ball above his head on rebounds and immediately looks down the floor. He doesn’t bring it down so little guards can swipe at it. He can stick the 17 foot jumper and can make free throws. He catches anything thrown his way and has good drop steps and pump fakes to get defenders in the air down low. He draws fouls due to his massive frame. He is so big that sometimes you have to foul him once he backs you down. His court vision is superb. Every rebound he grabs he instantly looks down the floor and hits his teammates right in stride.A few different guys on his team got wide open dunks due to Meeks Vision. I’ve been high on him sense his AAU and High School days. People always mentioned how he wasn’t athletic. I truthfully don’t care about how athletic a dude is, I care about if they can play. Sure it’s cool to be bouncy, fast, quick but it doesn’t matter if your not that effective. This young fella just played very well against title contending Louisville. And did it with a smile on his face. Seems to really be having fun while playing. I expect him to generate some draft buzz in the 2015 draft.

Bob BallParticipantMeeks reminds me of what Smith was supposed to be at UCLA. A big Body with soft hands who can score around the basket. he was throwing amazing passes today almost jaw dropping how accurate they were.

SiggyParticipantHe looks more like a 3-4 yr player to me. He needs to get in better shape, period. His offensive game isn’t much outside of his passing and soft hands and he’s a liability defensively because he’s slow. He does appear to have a high IQ though.

MalcolmxParticipantHe can stick a 15-18 foot jumpshot on offense. Actually hit one today. Also can do some work in the post and draws fouls. I think you will see more of what he brings to the table during the year. Roy Williams will have to play him some more from now on I would think.

druneave3ParticipantTrue, they were nice passes, but anyone could have made those passes. Louisville was not getting back and he was passing to wide open players.

mikeyvthedonParticipantDid bring some Love today on that factor, though that has always been part of his reputation. Very soft hands and a nice b-ball IQ for sure, plus I think he has done great things with his body/conditioning since he has hit campus at UNC. Still agree with Siggy that I think the NBA upside is sort of limited. I saw him hit that 15-footer today, just still think he got a majority of his buckets off of offensive rebounds and near the basket, while not really establishing much post position to create through in the half court.
Ultimately, his lack of athleticism will make it hard for him to draw much draft buzz. As someone who saw Kevin Love in high school, he was on a different level, weighed at least 20-30 pounds left and had much more diversity as an offensive player. Even Kevin had to completely change his body to get the player you see today. However, Kevin could also stretch the floor much more so than hitting the occasional 15 footer. He has definitely excelled as a PF and I truly believe he was a much better athlete than Meeks at a similar stage. I know this was not the original comparison in this post, just giving some of the major differences between a guy like Love and a guy like Meeks as prospects. Will Meeks do the things on offense to make up for his lack of quickness as a defender, especially as a likely center?
I think Meeks would be too easy to defend in the NBA and even at his size, he definitely does not have ideal size for a C, nor close to the athleticism to not be eaten alive by PF’s. His early production is quite promising, just think he needs to do major work on his body and maybe that will help him gain some of the necessary quickness for the next level. While he has some positive qualities, think the NBA is still quite a bit away and that North Carolina should just enjoy having a center who is making positive contributions and may do so for another few seasons.
