    I was thinking about the most prototypical NBA player in the L then expanded my thoughts on a starting 5 of the most prototypical NBA players in the L.  I can’t seem to fill it though.

    By prototypical I mean, a guy that isn’t going to be an All-Star but is definitely a starter.  A guy that won’t win you a title, but won’t be the reason as to why you don’t.  A player that isn’t a specialist but has a solid all-around game.  Players that don’t have extreme strengths or glaring weaknesses.

    The players I could come up with:  Arron Afflalo and Wesley Matthews.

    They both make the right pass but won’t lead your team in assists.  They’ll rebound if they have to but aren’t going to grab 10 any time soon.  They’re going to play tough defense but won’t shut down their opponent.  They can create their own shot but aren’t going to do it 15-20 times a game.  (Note:  I realize Afflalo has nice numbers right now but that’s because he’s on the Magic).

    What are some other prototypical NBA players?

     most prototypical players in NBA are 3 and D guys.Every team has couple of them,that or shoot first PGs off the bench(also alot of team has those guards)

      …that’s not ‘prototypical’, look up the meaning of the word. Is the prototype centre a 3 & D guy?

    Sounds very similar to a "glue guy" except most glue guys come off the bench.

    Iggy or a prime Gerald Wallace. Ill even throw in a coupla old schoolers: Horace Grant, Danny Ainge, Terry Porter

     I tend to look at it in slightly different metrics.  I look at a prototype matching the physical range for a position (height/weight) and having adequate skills to match that position.  Perfect example was when MJ revolutionized the SG prototype and Kobe followed.  6’6" 190-210 guards that can do a bit of everything offensively and defensively.  I think CP3 and DWill still exemplify the prototype at PG.  The main position I see today without a consistent or more clearly defined prototype is Center.  Maybe it never was.  You had Russell and you had Yao….then everything in between.
