TripleDoubleScoutParticipantYa know, I was thinking about how people debate constantly about overpaid players in basketball and football. I started wondering about the issue of the “max” contract in the NBA as far as how many players currently in their prime actually deserve a max contract. Then I came up with these pretty logical and definitive criteria for what I define as a Franchise Player. Here goes:
1) Must be the leader or 2nd option on a consistently contending team.
2) Must be “box office”, meaning that as an individual, they are (largely) responsible for the butts in the stands ON THE ROAD.
Yep only 2 criteria as it turns out. There are arguments for other criteria, but these are the only ones that are necessary to justify a max deal. In the real world players are underpaid and overpaid just like everyone else because we live in a capitalist structure, which im my opinion is hopelessly flawed but the best economic system currently in existence for better or worse.
Anywho here is a short list of players under 31 who fit the bill in no particular order:
Derrick Rose
Blake Griffin
Kevin Durant
Lebron James
Russell Westbrook
Chris Paul
Carmelo Anthony
Dwight HowardHere are some players who are obviously either on the cusp or have potential of being Franchise Level:
James Harden
Steph Curry
John WallNow, some notes: There is an exception to this rule and let’s call it the Tim Duncan Exception. This would describe that player or two in every era that supercedes their lack of popularity/recognition due to sheer production/winning. That is indeed an exception and does not undermine the rule. What under 31 player would or will fall under this exception?
So as you can see being a TRUE franchise player is actually really really really rare and has nothing to do with who as a fan my personal favorite players are. Heck only 2 of my favorite players even made the the list, which is why I know my analysis is at least objective and sound, if not perfect.

frogmanParticipantJames Harden, Steph Curry and John Wall are all worthy of max contracts. The thing is teams like Charlotte, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Sacramento etc. would/should offer max contracts to 2nd level stars (when they are not in rebuilding mode) sort of what Atlanta did when they signed Joe Johnson. Clearly he wasn’t deserving of being one of the few highest players in the league but to compete in a smaller market and to keep the fanbase interested the deal made sense.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantAh but frogman you really actually made one of my points. When has giving a max deal to a guy that isn’t a Franchise Player ever worked out for a small market team?

jjbutler73ParticipantHow many times has ANY contract “worked out” for a small market team? By your standards, never. The fact is, if teams want to compete, they have to pay. But since you feel you have all the answers to what a franchise player is, you can never be wrong.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantFirst off okc, san antonio are the two biggest examples. Second, there is no need to get fiesty because someone posted a frigging opinion and asked for others opinions on the subject. Jeez smh…

HaleParticipantBlake Griffin isn’t really a franchise player, but his popularity and marketability make him worth near the max.
I do think Harden, Curry and Wall could earn one in due time but to this point they haven’t. Also just wondering why did you pick 31 instead of 30? Seems like a random number to me.

David Stern a.k.a. da muthaf@cking leader of da kryptsParticipantBlake Griffin is not a franchise player. One could argue that Rondo should take his place on that list. D Wade also deserves to be there. Kevin Love was the best PF in the game when he was healthy so I would include him as well. I feel like people completely forgot about him and what he did every night in the Nba.
The potential franchise player list should be longer IMO. Paul George definitely deserves to be there (if you don’t consider him a franchise player yet) as well as Kyrie Irving, Demarcus Cousins and Damian Lillard. Maybe even Kawhi Leonard. I’m not very high on him, but I know others are.

mikeyvthedonParticipantHe was eating breakfast in Yorkville (fancy part of Toronto, he is here for Caribana). I walked by him a few times with my dog. Than, as live really close to there, I dropped my dog off. Than went back to a store to get a soda, this time wearing my "Oden: The Legacy Continues" shirt. He covered his hands in his face when he saw me. I than proceeded to say "Noah stopper" twice. His friend Rich repeated it once as he looked at me. I walked away. Instinct to do that, stupid. My eternal apologies go to LeBron James. However, he and Greg Oden are still my favorite players. Their combination, in my opinion, is incredible. Sorry, had to tell this story, end of my stupid fanboyism.

DipoTimeParticipantI have to agree with those saying Kyrie Irving. He is one of the best young players in the world. He has been putting on a show for the US team for a while now. He also put on a show All Star weekend. His excitement on the court mixed with his humor and humility off the court make him one of the most liked players in the league. If it weren’t for injuries then he would be close to that first tier of players on your list.

Detroit FanaddictParticipantAs good as Kyrie Irving is his team wasn’t a contender. If being a contender didn’t matter I’d be inclined to say LaMarcus Aldiridge, and Ricky Rubio as well.

And you’d have to consider Anthony Davis, Demarcus Cousins, Rubio, and Andrew Bynum.

Detroit FanaddictParticipantI wouldn’t consider Andrew Bynum for shit. He can’t stay healthy, never led his team and clearly didn’t want to play for the 76er’s post trade. He’s lucky he got the 12 million he did.

NastyDHLParticipantThat’s why I said you would have to consider him. If he’s healthy he’s a top 3 center and a top 3 post player…if Kevin Love is healthy, if Derrick Rose is healthy, if Dwight Howard is healthy, if Steph Curry is healthy…
He never led his team? Do you expect him to lead a team that has Kobe Bryant on it?

ph90702A franchise player is a guy who can be the best player on a championship team. He has to be able to make others around him better and take over games when needed.

phila9012ParticipantI think Kyrie is already a franchise player He did really well in the Blue white game, he is clutch, he is improving, he made the all star team in his second year in the league, and he can carry a team. Also Paul George should be added to the guys on the cusp he showed in the Playoffs how good he is and he should be better next year now that he knows how it is being the primary option for a team.

HitsterParticipantMax contract for a guy coming off a rookie deal is always a lot less than a max contract to a guy who is 27 or over and getting his 2nd post rookie deal.
Teams this summer have moved away from giving out huge deals and the only two FA’s who got max deals were CP3 and D12 who I doubt anyone would argue about.
I was interested why 31 was chosen as the age limit, another guy who would qualify for that criteria is Chris Bosh but he plays a slightly different role to a main franchise player or even on a team with two franchise guys. But he would probably get max deal offers if and when he is next a FA.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantSorry for not explaining the age thing guys in the original post. The reason is simply I wanted to focus on players who will be or are receiving their FIRST max deal. There is simply no argument/controversy for saying kobe or wade or nowitzki etc deserve max deals. I think its pretty obvious after the fact you know? Hope that answers your question…
