To the ones that play basketball, I’m having trouble fixing my shot. People tell me all the time that I have a hitch in my jump shot, kind of like Kidd-Gilchrist. I was never a shooter but I just started adding a 3pt shot and now I’m being labeled as one just because I can hit it all the time. I just want to know if there are any tips or advice I can do to make it just one motion. Basically now how it is is that I bring it up to above my eye level, pause for a bit then release with a follow through. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The best thing a coach ever did for me and my shooting was standing still shooting with one-hand. It doesn’t allow the hitch as you would lose the ball out of your hand. In order to shoot the ball it needs to be in one motion.

The basics never hurt, with the practice make sure you have balance, your elbow is and stays tucked in and you follow your hand through to the rim.

The drill may not be exciting, but man it is effective. I was about 10-11 when I was shown this and the coach made me do it for 20mins twice a week for about 6 months, ever since then I have been know as a pretty good shooter in my basketball community.

truthfully some people have a textbook jumpshot and it works for them and others have more unconventional shooting motions that still work for them. If you have gotten so much better just remember to stay consistent always remember to flick your wrists. Fixing what needs to be fixed will come in time but the best advice to remember is do it the same way every time and flick the wrist. I apologize if im not the help you wanted i taught myself how to shoot, but its gotten consistent. Either way good luck to you.

Record your shot on video. I didn’t used to really notice it as I was shooting but I recorded myself shooting once and it looked like I was kind of rushing my shot. Something simple as that, slowing down just a little bit and concentrating on form and follow through helped me a lot.

I’ve recorded it a few times over the years. I was playing ball yesterday and it felt good when I was shooting, like psychologically I was thinking my form was textbook but then after I saw the video I kept seeing the hitch still there. I’m going to keep working on it. If I cant fix it ill just live with how it is since I’m more of a pass-first/defensive pg anyways.

That’s a terrible decision; If you don’t work on the things you’re bad at, you’re just going to end up with the “What if?” that players like Rondo and Dwight have. I still can’t believe it when I see a 21 year old player coming out of college and they “don’t have a left.” You can do better than that

“I bring it up to above my eye level, pause for a bit”

This is the problem, just don’t pause. To create enough arc on the ball you want to bring if past your eye level in a smooth, fluid motion. Players like Curry and Nash shoot beautifully because their shot is simplistic and strait forward. The more steps in your shot process is just that much more things that can go wrong during the shot. I recommend the aforementioned shooting with one hand drill. It forces you to keep your elbow tucked in, and you will learn to use your wrist more.

Just repetition, I usually start with standing right by the basket working on form.. take 10-20 shots (you can take more if you want) and try and swish all of them while working on form, then step back and do the same. Keep going for as far as you’re comfortable shooting from. Really helps me with my touch and shooting form and it’s my warm up before every game I’ve ever played.

You can always take classes with Gary Payton for 5,000$ an hour.

If you’re going that route you should go to whoever the Spurs shooting coach is (anyone?)
Go to San Antonio, put in work, become knockdown shooter, works every time.

I’ve seen some good advice already listed. I agree with Festar and R-Dot most though. When I played, I was a fairly good shooter, but really didn’t even start taking 3s until I was around 13 or so. It seriously is all about the basics. I’ve found that shooting drills with one hand were the best way to have a smooth jump shot for me at least and I assume for most other people as well. Whenever I shoot around to this day, I was always start with short little jumpers in the lane just to get going and eventually work myself out further. Hopefully this advice helps you. I know it sounds simple but it really is like this if you break it down:

    Muscle memory+good mechanics=smooth jump shot

You do not need a big paragraph man. Look in the mirror man or glass window and watch your form. Do it right and do it all the time.Walking with or without a ball.
    All toes forward
    Bend knees
    Elbows in.
    Follow through.

Source: self taught and now I drain threes like nobodys buisness.

He “can hit it all the time”. So why would he need advice? My advice would be, start by being honest about your game. If you think you “can hit it all the time”, you won’t work to improve.

Start out about three feet away from the basket. Stand still and shoot the ball with one hand, make sure to hold follow threw. After making five in a row, step back three feet. Continue this process out to the three point line. It should help to take some of the hitch out of your shot.

We use to always yell out BEEF when we shot.

    B-Bend your knees
    E-Elbow in
    E-Elevate
    F-Follow through

We were also taught that you want your thumbs to make a T with the thumb on your guide hand on the side of the ball as the top of the T and your shooting thumb as the I of the T. One of my best friends scored over 1000 points in high school mainly on 3 pointers and held his thumbs more parallel like II but he also had smaller hands. It is all about what is comfortable for you and then when you find what works it is all about muscle memory. Ideally you would want your shot to look like Ray Allen or Reggie Miller but that isn’t always realistic. It is all about practice as well and not just getting shots up but getting shots up in a game like scenario.

Confidence is also key and while I was full of confidence when I got hot if I missed a few shots in a row my confidence was usually shot and might as well have been punting the ball at the basket.
