I know I posted this on the Draft forum, but I wanted to bring this topic over to the Hawks’ fans to hear what they think. I, for one, think this would somehow, some way spin the tables in the Hawks direction.

Mull this over, the Hawks, once upon a time, drafted Pau Gasol (Barcelona, Spain) with the #3 pick in the 2001 Draft, only to trade him to the Grizzlies for Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Marietta, GA). Ouch! And, in another move, in the 2005 Draft, the Hawks passed on Chris Paul and Deron Williams to draft Marvin Williams with the #2 pick. Double Ouch!!

I think, if the other teams agree, the Hawks should trade Josh Smith (College Park, GA) to either Memphis or Oklahoma City, for the draft rights to Ricky Rubio (Barcelona, Spain), point guard!

Poetic justice? What goes around, comes around? Grace? Mercy? YES!

The real kicker is making sure you draft Rubio. While OKC will be easier to work with (they have more money to spend, and Rick Sund knows the roots of that franchise). Memphis is a safer bet (plus, it was Memphis who offered Smith the contract the Hawks had to match last summer).

If this happens, then everything changes for the Hawks summer. First, you don’t have to resign Bibby. You don’t have Smith’s $10M on the books. You can sign Marvin Williams to an extension. You can even try to lure Lamar Odom away from the beach with a guaranteed starting position. Here’s a quick peek at what the lineup COULD look like:

FC – Al Horford / David Andersen / Randolph Morris
PF – Lamar Odom / Solomon Jones / Othello Hunter
SF – Marvin Williams / Maurice Evans / James Singleton
SG – Joe Johnson / Flip Murray / Mario West
PG – Ricky Rubio / Acie Law / Speedy Claxton

All that for under $70M? Why not?

Will probably need to find away to eliminate Claxton’s contract, and an experienced back up PG would almost be essential, but this is exciting!

Have to sign Flip Murray first since he is a FA..Rubio is a risk/reward guy. Nobody knows how he will fare in the NBA. If you trade Josh and put alot in Rubio and he doesnt succeed it will be a huge blow. I didn’t want the hawks to resign Josh for the money he got because he isnt worth what Joe Johnson is getting paid. There will be alot of suitors for Odom so ATL will have a lot of teams to contend with.

apparently josh smith has a line in his contract that says the team he is traded to has to pay a $6 million trade clause. so basically either memphis or okc would have to pay smith 6 mil before he even touched a basketball for them. thats what is hurting his trade value

There is the $6M payment for Smith if he gets traded, but I wonder if the Hawks can pay a portion of that to get the right deal done.

Also, someone else pointed out that because Memphis signed Smith’s offer sheet last summer, then they cannot trade for Smith until August 15th.

Then, you put that with the fact that Sam Presti at Oklahoma City is not ready to pull the trigger on a player who is not ready to be Kevin Durant’s dance partner, and if Rubio falls to the Kings, they’d swoop him up in a heartbeat all leads me to believe, Smith probably isn’t on his way out of Atlanta.

If this is the case, and the Hawks want to keep Josh Smith, then you have to REPLACE Mike Woodson. As good as Woodson has been for the Hawks, if you believe that Smith can be a top 20 player, then you have to take all the necessary steps into helping reach that ceiling. I don’t believe Smith will ever respect and listen to Woodson enough to get there.

    OTHER STUFF:

draftexpress.com came out and said that the Hawks may package the #19 pick with Speedy Claxton’s expiring contract, just so they can afford to bring back Bibby. http://www.draftexpress.com/blog/Jonathan-Givony/#Word-on-the-Street-June-16th-3263

This would mean NO 1st RND pick for ATL. It’s all in what you believe. If you believe this is an overall weak draft, and there is no real value at #19, then by all means, sell the pick. BUT, as Rajon Rondo and Rudy Fernandez told us, there is major value to the teams who do their homework.

Just say no to trading Josh Smith. We’ve invested far too much in him just to let him go.

I really, really wanted Ricky Rubio on the Hawks. I just thought that he’d be a great fit running the show. Now, it looks as if the T’Wolves are gonna trade up to the #2 spot to get him. Oh well, looks, just as long as we don’t draft Jeff Teague, I’ll live.

I like your team. But Josh Smith (and P.Gasol) is my favorite player.
I would like see Ricky in Atlanta Hawks. I’m spanish and fan of Hawks.
For your team, I think need a better C from the bench.
    I wouldn’t know if trade Josh…
    Sorry for my english.

With the Warriors and the Suns struggling to complete the Amare deal, Phoenix is thinking about other offers. Phoenix really wants Josh Smith, and rumor has it that they’ve offered Amare Stoudemire to try and lure him away.

I don’t like this trade for either team. Atlanta would get one year with Amare and Joe to try and win the East, then they’d be back where they were in 2004. And I have no idea why Phoenix would wanna give up on Amare, and leave Nash with a bunch of young guys. This proposed deal makes no sense.

On second thought, this actually may be a good thing for the Hawks if they don’t believe Josh Smith will ever mature into a top twenty talent. They’d be telling their fans, we serious about winning right now. And, I like this lineup:

    FC – Al Horford
    PF – Amare Stoudemire
    GF – Joe Johnson
    G – Jamal Crawford
    PG – Mike Bibby

The Hawks wouldn’t be able to afford to resign Bibby, Marvin and Flip, and truthfully, they’d probably have to pick one of the three. Bibby would give them the best shot to win this year.

It’s not for the future, and it’s something to think about.

~ Why is PHX putting Amare on the trading block?
