Woj, the reporting robot from Yahoo! Sports, tweeted that Josh Smith signed a 4-year $56 million contract with the Detroit Pistons.

Whatcha guys think? Doesn’t seem like the ideal fit, but in the East it could be enough to get in the playoffs.

With most teams in the east tanking, Pistons should be good enough for the 7th or 8th seed.

Terrible fit. His contract for a player with his game makes me queasy. Joe Dumars, his impatience and lack of foresight strikes again.
My sympathy goes out to all Pistons fans. Their ceiling as a team now is as a treadmill team.

So are they expecting him to play the 3? or continue to have Drummond come off the bench? Not a big fan of this to be honest. They’re going to owe Monroe next season and I lack faith in Smith as a small forward due to his poor shooting efficiency outside the paint. If Drummond and Knight continue to develop, KCP can contribute from day one, and Smith can fit it with the rest of the team I think it puts them in the playoff hunt.

Right. Defensively, if their frontline is Drummond-Monroe-Smith, they should be exciting. Spacing on the floor when running the pick and roll is going to be quite an issue, however.

That will be the worst outside shooting frontcourt. 0 ability to give their guards space to penetrate

It is obviously enough to get Detroit in the playoffs with the front court of Smith/Monroe/Drummond but if they want to be a contender they need to improve their guard play idk if Brandon Knight is a PG or SG but I could see them as a 6th or 7th seed

They could get a really good SF in return for Monroe, but I love Monroe.. Nothing really wrong with making this deal because it probably pushes them to the playoffs, but I like all 3 players on their frontcourt and would rather they all start for teams (Smith at SF isn’t as entertaining). But Pistons will be a very interesting team to watch next year.

Anyone noticed all these logjams at positions created? They draft KCP after it seems Knight would be moving to the 2. Still have Stuckey. They now have 3 (2 of them are All-star caliber and drummond is close) in their front court. And yet a rather big hole at the 3. On the bright side, their bench is much improved, their now a playoff team, and I really see KCP as a ROY candidate if he starts.

…but that’s just because the Pistons are clearly out of the tank-for-Wiggins lotto.

However, as a Piston’s fan I’d be at least a little disappointed. Smith is an exciting talent, but $14M/year? To me that’s just crazy. He’s a tweaner w/huge upside, but hot & cold results. If you’re the Pistons, how certain are you that Smith’s 2013-14 will be better than Millsap’s in Atlanta or West’s in Indi? To me it’s a toss up. Smith has the upside, but the other two have been superior in terms of advanced stats pretty much across the board. I’d take Smith for upside, but not at such a massively inflated cost.

Atlanta made a great move when they signed Sap @ $9.5m/year. He will possibly totally replace Smith’s production at a far more reasonable rate.

As a cav fan, I’m just happy we didn’t sign him. Detroit has a nice team though but Smith is so overrated he’s gonna be exposed now. I said the same thing about Amare though and when he went to the knicks he killed it his first year so I could be wrong.

I remember hearing on ESPN that Josh Smith wanted out of Atlanta because he was sick of losing in the first round every year. Granted it seemed to be an opinion of one reporter, but clearly he’s not concerned with contending or even advancing the playoffs with this signing.

Horrible move in so many ways. Pistons have overpaid for a player that doesn’t fit in with their young talent. Another guy that will clog up the lane for Drummond and Monroe. Pistons improve just enough so they are now just a first round playoff team that will have no draft pick in a loaded draft class(You’re welcome Charlotte). Pistons lose their cap flexibility going forward and have to resign Monroe to a big contract next season with Drummond commanding a max deal in the not so distant future. Just mind boggling. I know the owner is all about winning at all costs so Joe Dumars felt pressure to win now but making stupid decisions is not beneficial in the long run. At least it’s not as bad as the Ben Gordon and Charlie V signings I guess….

I am deeply saddened on this day! It will be a longer rebuild now, I feel very sorry for Drummond and Monroe. It’s like taking a jackhammer to a solid foundation, just don’t get it. At least the radio callers in Detroit will get their wish and make the playoffs only to go nowhere!

So angry. Charlotte enjoy our pick. Dumars needs to go. Pistons royalty or not he just made another Charlie V./Ben Gordon signing. He needs to be shown the way out if the Pistons are going to have any chance of recovering from mediocrity. Keep in mind that this is coming from one of the loyalist Pistons fans out there who has missed very very few games over the last 4 years even when they were bad.

Dumars may have sealed his fate with this one.

Unless he has a bunch of other moves in mind I don’t see a front court of Drummond, Monroe, and Smith being very successful together. I’d imagine the three of them won’t be able to play together much unless one of their jump shots improves dramatically. Hopefully this doesn’t slow Drummond’s growth.

I hope he does not trade Monroe or Drummond. We have a bright young core and if he hadn’t made this ridiculously stupid signing we could have probably added one more in next years draft which is loaded. Now I don’t think we will have a pick next year.

Thank God they signed him. As good a player as Josh Smith was, I still think the Rockets should focus on Ryan Anderson. With him out of the picture, we can focus our attention to Anderson.

As for the Pistons, I have no clue what they’re doing but they must be plotting something pretty big if they’re going to sign a player that plays the same position as their best player.

They might be looking to unload Greg Monroe and for some reason, the name Luol Deng comes to mind

I don’t see why they wouldn’t at least explore the deal.
They’d both be teams dealing from a position of strength/depth to fill a need, both in terms of position in their starting lineup and fit.

The Rockets want to keep Asik with Dwight on board because…why?

Josh Smith is not a 3. I’m glad everyone on this site agrees, such a bad signing!

Joe is clearly trying to save his job but I think everyone on this site could do a better job.

You have youth and are a sf away from being a up and coming good team. (2014 draft has “superstar” potential) smh man. Now they play for 7th or 8th seed in the east and that’s where you want your franchise to be? Wow

Congrats josh on a great pay day!

Really wish San Antonio had the money/wanted to get Josh Smith.

They could have helped fix his shot, they could have actually coached him, their was just so much potential for that being a great destination for him. He also would have been insanely scary as a do-it-all role player for them, they’d basically have 2 Kawhi Leonards. Instead he’s going to “be the man” on a lottery team.

I know the Pistons were 30+ wins, I know Boston and Milwaukee will be awful this year. But I still think Atlanta is better than them, and I like the Wizards more than them too. I think this is an 8 seed at best, and a very low ceiling on this team. Unless Andre Drummond morphs into a combination of Shaq and Dwight and start owning the league, much like his “draft class creation” did every franchise I did in NBA 2K12.

Depends on what type of offensive they run, if they are running an uptempo O then they will be decent. Half court sets they will suck. Should be a 7th or 8th seed though.

Seriously. Detroit played Villanueva and Maxiell at PF for almost 70 percent of the time last year. Josh Smith is an instant upgrade over both of them. By a Mile. Personally, I do not think Monroe is good enough at playing PF (right now- he needs to work on his outside shot) for him to play for long stretches with Drummond. Adding smith to the mix allows them to develop both players gradually because smith can slide to SF for short stints. Its a good move. I dunno if it makes them a playoff team though.. Personally, I would like them to go after more wing help, but this is the decision they made. Its a very cautious move and says that they are going to give knight another year at PG…

Basically they’re taking Josh Smith over Greg Monroe, since Monroe seems to be the odd man out, which is just so dumb. Not sure why Detroit doesn’t want to keep Monroe.

If Monroe is really available than the Thunder should ask how much it would cost to get him to OKC. Switch him and Ibaka from 4 to 5 depending on the Matchup, and combine this with Monroes skills and passing game and this could really be a team.

I will never understand how these organizations dont see that certain players DO NOT play the positions that they want them to play. As much as people think he is, and as much as he tries to be, Josh Smith is NOT a SF. And thus, is a bad fit for a Pistons team whose best player is a PF.

Im a die hard piston fan and the fact that I was there when we won in 2004 and watched both titles in 89 and 90 with Joe D a player on those teams.Cant lie as of late been very unpleased with him and how things have gone these last few years. Now as a former player and a current coach. I do know this Joe D did two things he did in 2004 he a took his tim ein free agency let some things fall into place before signing smith he b took a gamble you can all sit here now and say how dumb this is blah blah but I have a feeling this is just the start trades will now happen. In 04 he didn’t trade until deadline and it was a gamble everyone said why Sheed he is tis and that a headcase etc etc guess what we won a title then. Now im not saying we will do that this year but this is a huge start.I truly believe Monroe is a reat player but the way we need to play doesn’t fit his overall game.Smith does and Smith has been to playoffs our locker now consist of so many yug guys who haven’t had that experience we do need a grity tough hard nose vet like Smith to tell those other start maing excuses lets play simply put I coach at the college level and sometimes you need a thug or two to win it raises the competitive atmosphere from day one and players begin to hold eah other accountable period. Ala Melo at Cuse. NBA no idff don’t want whole team of softys or thugs but you need a blend of thugs and buckets. Monroe has greta trade vaule and B knight is not the answer so Joe D will now try one of two things and both Im ok with as should all piston fans be a package Monroe and or Knight for a proven PG to help lead team and kinda check Smith ego if it gets to wild and b get a proven SF if that point option is not there. Everyone can knock this signing but also need tobe aware of how Joe D handled all year we heard Josh only taking a max or near max deal so that’s 5-100 or 4-80. All year we heard this well Joe D got him for 4-54 that’s not near max and is about the same you would give Monroe next year so you package him now ship him all you did was sign your PF of future year early. People need to realize before you knock this lets just think do you really want Monroe in pick roll solutions long teem he cant shoot or dunk.Smith just cant shoot bt he can dunk the hell of out the ball. Monroe really hasn’t improved from season to season Ive watched his whole growth is stopped after year one same with knight you see Monroe biggest problems is he never be regarded better than Cousins and he is a lunatic and Knight biggest problem is he just not mentaly tough enough to play PG in Detroit think about PG we have when we win titles Zeke Billiups he Hunter tough as shit Mike james was tough Knight doesn’t have that mental makeup he always be the mediorcore pg calapari coached in face every year Cal stil coaches the further down Knights name goes of great PGs under him cuss he consistently finds a better one he not Rose not Evans he just Brandon Knight a guy who in high school made living with his handle and jumper but he cant bully you no size he cant out quick you he ia a fundamental sound pg that’s all well in good in a backup or a 28 year old pg but not a 21-22 year franchise pg gotta Everyone talks bout Cheeks with westbrook the reason westbrook is so good is cuss he don’t give a damn he has chip on his shoulder and he gonna shoot regardless is KD is open or not its just his makeup he a asshole.Guess what folks you need your PG to be one to set tone for rest of your team which is why I truly believe now after one month you go get Rondo let him prove he healthy get him by Aug don’t wait for him to play 20-30 games and develop his rep back get him now when everyone doubting him.

Smith has got a nowhere near max deal and per year is about the same as Al Jefferson took so money wise it isn’t a bad deal. People are jumping up and down saying that Monroe and Drummond will cause a logjam with in the frontcourt but Utah had Jefferson, Kanter, Favours and Millsap for two seasons and not a lot was said.

Drummond is still learning and if KCP does start they may want more experience in the starting line up so Monroe and Smith start at frontcourt positions. Smith is now mainly a PF but he can slide across to SF if they want to go big or have him guard the likes of LeBron, Paul George, PP etc. Also Smith had more 3 points shots and success last season than at any time in his career so he can play away from the basket and allow Monroe and Drummond spacing.

There are 96 frontcourt minutes so each player can get good playing time before you even think about sliding Smith across to the SF position.

Monroe can be renewed this summer and I’d assume the Pistons will look to tie him down long term.
