Sewok15ParticipantI don’t know the terms of the deal but doesn’t this seem like an odd signing to you guys considering how loaded San Antonio is on the wing. Belinelli doesn’t bring anything that Danny Green or Gary Neal doesn’t bring in my opinion. Add that to Kawhi and Ginobli and I don’t see a ton of minutes for him. I know they say you can never have enough shooting but this seems like overkill to me.
My only guess would be they don’t plan on playing Corey Joseph many minutes at backup point guard and Gary Neal will get more time at the point…that opens up a little bit of PT at SG but with Manu already coming off the bench this seems like an odd signing to me.

dacula18ParticipantThey got him cheap at 2 years 6 mil. He is basically Gary Neal but cheaper and taller, so it was probably a good move if they end up not resigning Neal.

RafterParticipantAdding a shooter doesn’t hurt for a very good price at $6mill for two years. The Spurs will be a bit heavy in the back-court which means they’ll probably let Neal go. It’s funny how big Neal was in the Finals to only be replaced, that’s business right there.

Yes, I will admit that Neal is a better shooter than Bellinelli.
However, Bellinelli is a far better fit for the Spurs than Neal is. Marco can handle the ball, something that Neal can’t do. That takes pressure off of Manu to create opportunities for the 2nd unit.
Marco is also more balanced with his shot taking. As huge as Neal was in the finals, essentially he is a gunner that doesn’t play defense. Bellinelli, while not a great defender by any stretch of the imagination, is a passable one that gives effort on that side of the floor. The best part is, we won’t pressure Marco into doing more than he’s capable of. He struggles when he’s the 2nd option on offense, like he was in the playoffs. He won’t have that problem here. Not to mention everyone always plays to their potential on the Spurs.
All in all, another great signing by the Spurs. They’re getting more international by the season lol. I wouldn’t be suprised if Livio Jean Charles comes over in 2 years and starts tearing it up.
