Wavy BagelsParticipanthttp://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba–spurs-finalizing–45-million-deal-with-tiago-splitter-195615678.html
A little too much money considering he softened up more than a Mister Softee ice cream cone in the Finals, but it’s a safe signing. He’s been donning the black and silver for the past 3 seasons and is used to the system already. I would have liked for the Spurs to have heavily considered Marcin Gortat, but it doesn’t make sense to bring in a a big unfamiliar with the system and waiting for him to be.

TRC1991Participantjeeeeeeze Tiago Splitter is NOT worth $9mil a year. Is he even better than Timofey Mozgov?

CameronParticipantThe market for big men inflates their value. Rumour was Portland was putting together an offer-sheet and if they go 50mil/5 years then the Spurs are in an even worse spot. After the finals it’s been hard for me to even think about the NBA and Splitter was pretty much told to go sit at the kiddie table the entire series. That being said, he was solid in the regular season and if he can help keep Duncan fresh for the playoffs then why not.
Plus I don’t really think Gortat is much better.

Wavy BagelsParticipant4yrs. But you’re right, Indy. The deal is relatively the same, minus that extra year.

doubledribblerParticipantI am shocked. I like Splitter, but I don’t see how you can justify paying him 9 million a year for 5 years, especially after being forced to basically remove him from the lineup in the playoffs during the last 2 years (OKC and Miami).

IndianaBasketballParticipantHe’s overpaid regardless, but is it 4 yrs @ $36 million or 5 yrs @ $45 million?

ph90702It turns out that even the Spurs aren’t immune to giving out bad contracts.

PurpleMonkeyDishwasherParticipantSo then Pekovich must be getting max… and they said signings were going were going to be less crazy this summer!

Sewok15ParticipantHe is a big guy that can’t really hit a jump shot or score in the post…he also isn’t really a shotblocker. He fits well in their system because he can play off Parker and Duncan but no way he is worth 9 million a season. I thought the Pacers overpaid David West a little at 13 million per year but that looks like a bargain compared to this deal.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantI thought after his subpar finals he would wind out as a steal for some team. I guess not. They have to tell him that he is not Boris Diaw, Splitter would have been fine if he didn’t pass out of the paint. He pass out of at least 12 five foot shots in the last to rounds.

DolanCareParticipantIf the Spurs are willing to pay that much for a big, they should have just pursued a more productive FA.
