Shaquille O’Neal has plans to open a free children’s hospital in Baton Rouge

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/shaquille-o-neal-plans-open-free-children-hospital-002625568.html

“I wasn’t supposed to announce this, but I’m going to do it anyway,” Dr. O’Neal said. “I had a talk with the powers that be in Baton Rouge, and my plan is to build a Shaquille O’Neal children’s hospital. That’s my plan, so that right now is in the works, and hopefully it gets done. ”

Dr. O’Neal said the idea has been discussed for two years, and his goal is to join with Our Lady of the Lake “to build the biggest, freest hospital in the state of Louisiana.”

“All sick children can come for free,” he said. “That’s my vision.”

Shaq might be the greatest superstar ever. The guy won Chips, became a rapper, was a actor and pissed some people off along the way but had fun doing it. Made and still makes tons of money and is looking to do some good with it. Love that guy.

Where is the cash-ola coming from?? Hospital employees aren’t big on volunteer work.

Free clinics are pretty common. This isn’t some utopian, unrealizable idea. The “cash-ola” will come from Shaq and other donors. Much of the staff and logistical support will presumably be provided by Our Lady of the Lake. This is great work on Shaq’s part. It’s a grave injustice that we live in a society in which we have both millionaires and people too poor to afford healthcare, but if that’s going to be the case, it’s at least good to see some millionaires willing to devote a small percentage of their fortune to good causes. And, at least in Shaq’s case, a large percentage of those millions of dollars aren’t the result of any direct exploitation–unlike people like Bill Gates who make billions of dollars through intense exploitation and then pretend to be heroes when they devote some of that stolen money to philanthropic efforts. So, I applaud Shaq, but I hope we can all strive to build a more equitable society in which everyone is able to receive adequate medical attention without having to rely on charity simply to see a doctor.

“Wow, isn’t that socialism? Sick children getting a cure even when their parents don’t have money? Why does Shaq want to foster lazziness and free-riding?”

That’s what real right-wing Americans think, I guess.

You have been mis-informed. Charity and Socialism are not the same. Charity is VOLUNTARIALY given out of the goodness of your heart to help people less fortunate. Socialism, is taking your money BY FORCE, in which much of the money goes to government employees rather than the people who it is intended for.
