Age – Important in terms of a bodies development, an 18 year old is going to be markedly different from a 22 year old

Reach – More important that height IMO because it incorporates wingspan and height and ignores the wasted height of having a long neck.

Weight – Lets you know if someone is in shape, strong, has a big build etc

Max Vert – A good example of explosiveness and athletic ability

So in the draft prospects all draftees go through the combine where they have measurements and athletic testing done. From these tests scouts, analysts, and all of us try to define players from these measurements and tests and change our rankings of them based on these results. I got to wondering which of these tests are the most critical and how accurate our judging of players from these results really are.

So my first question is, if you were given the basic position of the player (guard, wing, forward, or big) which 4 of these 16 results would be the most important and critical to your decision making on how to rank these players without stats or seeing them play.

    The choices are:
    – Age
    – Height without shoes
    – Height with shoes
    – Weight
    – Wingspan
    – Reach
    – Body Fat
    – Hand Length
    – Hand Width
    – No step vert
    – No step vert reach
    – Max vert
    – Max vert reach
    – Bench press
    – Agility
    – Sprint

If enough people answer I will have other posts to follow.

It really depends on the player…For instance, knowing Anthony Bennett’s weight and body fat % are probably two things that teams would be interested in finding out whilst a player like Shane Larkin would have different question marks

I would say agility would be my top choice because I want to know how quick a guy can close out on a shot or how fast the recover if beat off the dribble.

    In no particular order

    1) Reach- Like somebody mentioned earlier, I feel this is more important than height because you can play equal or taller than somebody else because somebody may be taller due to having a longer neck.

2)Agility-Determines your ability to change direction quickly with balance and control. Need that on defense and offense.

3)Body Fat%- Two guys can weight the exact same but look totally different physically because muscle outweighs fat. I think people tend to look at weight more than trying to figure out one’s body fat % but body fat% can give you a better idea of how good of shape, one is actually in. Lebron weighs more than Carmelo but Lebron looks more in shape than Melo just for example.

    4) Age-Gives you an idea of the type of development one is capable of achieving whether it be body development, maturity, and how advanced a prospect is for his age or how much work they need.

Overall I think this is what I would be focusing on just looking at a prospect without seeing them play. But different positions require different abilities so it all depends on what you want from your prospect.

    I would first look at what is between his ears, but using your list;

    For a big:

Body fat %- has lots to do with work ethic

Max no step – when you are battling for boards it really helps

    Hand size- catching passes

    Wing:

    Body fat %

Max very reach – ideal wings to me can finish abouve the rim and grab boards

Wingspan – really helps to have a longer guy to help with defensive versitility, also helps with basically everything

    Pg:

    Body fat %

    Agility

    ?? Wingspan

Again I reiterate that with all the incredibly gifted bodies and athletes in the NBA, 90% of basketball is between the ears.
