According to CBS sports, the pistons are interested in FA Josh Smith.

    http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/22578966/report-josh-smith-has-5-6-free-agency-suitors-including-detroit

Personally, I would like to see josh smith in detroit. I think he can start at SF and play pf throughout the game as well. Having Smith at sf would be good for the pistons because it gives them another athletic shot blocking forward next to Monroe, who isn’t the best defensively. Also with drummond at center this covers up monroe below the rim/defensive play. Also, Smith would be a good post up option outside of monroe he gives them another good passer. Finally, this gives them an “insurance policy” incase Monroe decides to leave detroit.

He could cause alot of problems against teams like the east like the pacers and heat.

    Our lineup could be

    Knight
    KCP
    Smith
    Monroe
    Drummond

yes… the pistons have significant cap space.. the only real player theyre paying is stuckey (i guess charlie villanueva too, but he could be amnestied at any time). but they still need space to extend monroe and save for their other rookies.

i hope they make a strong push for iguodala though. he seems like a much better fit with them.

Amnesties should be made before the FA period, just clarifying this…

If that actually happened, Pistons could make a run for Rondo in a trade.

I’m sorry to say but Josh Smith is not a good SF. I love Josh Smith but he’s best when playing the 4 so he can utilize his strengths. If he thought he was a 4 and only a 4 then he wouldn’t be settling for so many jumpshots. The pistons just drafted Tony Mitchelle who I’m very high on, I think he will be the perfect big off the bench for them, he can play with both Drummond and Monroe and compliment them well. The only player they need to go after in FA is iggy, or wait till next year and push for LeBron.

I honestly don’t know why any team would be after Josh Smith. His horrible IQ, lack of leadership, broke jump shot, freelancing defense, uncoachability…then on top of that, his price?? Dude wants max. Even if he just gets close to that he’s an automatic salary cap killer.
Don’t do it Joe. They need a SF and they need leadership. Josh Smith is neither.

It’s time for Detroit to load up on talent to keep them drafting in that #10 range I would actually be happy if they didn’t sign anyone and started getting in the Andrew Wiggins lottery right now. The only teams that are worse than the Pistons are Orlando, Charlotte, and Phoenix. They need to draft an impact player before they start signing free agents. If they try to make the playoffs next year by signing free agents it will set the franchise back another 5 years.

You would think Dumars would learn from the first time when he signed Villaneuva and Gordon. Smith is a horrible player that is going to want way to much money and won’t synergize with their young core of Monroe/Drummond.

Josh Smith at SF? That would be awful and I am sure the Hawks are going to S&T him.

Do not question why any team is interested in Smith. As a Hawks fan, we will like the opportunity fora sign and trade so we get something for him. What a waste…. unfortunately, one day for another team, he will mature and play smarter.

I could see signing Smith to such a large deal is Houston or Dallas, which ever doesn’t get Dwight. I would be worried about Smith and Harden coexisting once it’s game 47 and Smith takes 10 jumpers in a half. I think Harden would strangle him. He doesn’t fit as well in Dallas but they need somebody and would probably go after Rondo. Either that or jump into to the FA period next year and get a good lottery pick. If Howard doesn’t stay with LA I think Howard goes to Dallas and Houston grabs Smith.

Hope it doesn’t happen. They need to think down the road when they have to resign Monroe, Drummond, and Knight if he’s in their future. I think whoever gives Smith a big contract will sooner or later have buyers remorse.

I think the Pistons should sign iggy. That would give them knight-kcp-iggy-monroe-drummond. with a decent bench. I think this is a playoff team but they need to focus on keeping their young big men for the future.

josh smith is a good player but he thinks hes better than he actually is… sometimes he plays really well.. then sometimes he plays like crap.. still takes to many jumpers that he doesn’t consistently make… for him to shoot only 46 percent from the field isn’t good at all… overall.. don’t want him on the pistons

Smith can still play 4-3 while Monroe plays 5-4 and Drummond plays 5. It may not necessarily be the best path for Detroit but it wouldn’t be the worst move. I think they should stay in the Wiggins sweepstake and at the very least end up drafting a guy like Glenn Robinson Jr. With Knight, Stuckey, KCP, Singler, Smith, Monroe, Drummond you have some serious scoring issues.

Why tank on purpose when most likely the charlotte bobcats, magics, kings or pelicans would most likely get that pick. Pistons are 1 or two pieces away from playoffs. Depending on how KCP turns out, they could be one piece away. Iggy would be nice, but he would be a undersized back court and he’s already 29. Josh smith in my opinion needs a new change of scenary, which i think would help him out

This would be an awful fit, awful use of cap space, awful addition to the lockeroom for Detroit. You have a young team with guys in their very early 20’s learning together and growing chemistry together. The team is based on an inside outside offense…mainly ran through Greg Monroe…Monroe posts on the block and the offense alot of times moves around him. Brandon Knight Spotting up for 3’s and cutting and I’m imagining KCP would be doing alot of the same. You have Drummond who doesn’t have much to offer offensively but he is a great rebounder on that end and he is fantastic on the finishing end of lobs. I’d imagine a more versatile perimeter oriented SF being the best fit in Detroit rather than somebody like Josh Smith who is absolutely not that. Not to mention he’s never been much of leader or been considered a great lockeroom guy so i just don’t see what reason Joe Dumars would want to go after him.

The pistons are not going to contend anytime soon so I think Smith or Iggy in 3 yrs time will be on the decline.

They could look at Corey Brewer, he is young enough, plays good defence and will not be too expensive.

The Pistons are well under the salary cap this summer and then are waaayyy under the following summer. They could just keep their current team, maybe just make the playoffs or get a 10-14th pick in the draft, then load up next summer….

That pick is top 8 protected next year, so unless they get worse… they will probably lose it…Maybe some of you are closer and know better, but its my understanding that if the pistons get worse next year, Joe Dumars is fired. Operating on those two premises, I think its safe to say that the pistons will try to make another big splash this year in free agency. However, I do not think that Josh Smith is the right player… He is def an great player, but he is not a great small forward and thus would have to get into a rotation for pf mins… that said… Monroe’s Jumpshot is still a work in progress and until that is taken care of, its hard to have him play with Drummond.

Is it weird that I would like to see them amnesty/trade stuckey and sign Tyreke Evans? I think that Tyreke is a really underrated, (albeit overrated for years) better version of Stuckey. His decision making and PG skills are better as is his defense. He is younger and I think he can be had for a good $$.

Paul Milsap is another player the pistons should target… he is more of a pf, but has slid to the 3 in the past. Again, I likely see him as having a cheaper $$ than a player like smith.

If Reddick is another player they should target but only if he is below $8m/year.

But the real question is do you give brandon knight another year at PG…

I forgot about that Bobcats trade……I really wanted the Pistons to trade this years pick for Tyreke Evans also.

The Kings would of drafted Trey Burke and Mclemore and been set with their backcourt for years to come

I really like the idea of bringing in Iggy playing point forward a lot and helping Knight handle his duties. I they can’t get him they should really take a look at Millsapp. He is in the positive side of the combo/tweener forward and is an underrated defender always top in the steals category. To spend 12 mil a year on Smith sounds horrible to me knowing he plays his worst when shooting all the long balls. Yes he is a good player and one of the best passing forwards in the league but this doesn’t seem to be a good fit for this young team.
