I’m wondering if anyone has an idea of what the cavs will do with the surprise of the draft Anthony Bennett.

    Can he play the 3?

    What about Tristan Thomson?

I think they can play them together a lot. He is a 4 but would be able to play some 3 on occasions. With the modern game and evolution of the Center, I don’t see why TT can’t play a fair bit of Center. Although it is a small line up, I think it can work in the game today. They can also play them together if they play Bennett at SF and think he is able of switching to some 3 for periods (although this won’t be his primary position).

I like this pick a lot. Bennett is very versatile and allows Cavs to play many different line ups. Cannot wait to see Bennett playing with Waiters and KI, he compliments them well knocking down shots, and provide toughness.

Cavs love their pick action and with Bennett the team can run deadly pick and roll, pick and pop plays with Irving and Waiters. I also believe Bennett will give the Cavaliers’ front line some diversity, the bottom line is the Cavs needed help and Bennett packages together power and skill in a very likeable personality.

I think Bennett is going to be exciting to watch in the pick and pop with KI, he’s going to be a match-up nightmare, but he doesn’t really have a low post game, bad shot selection and bad fundamentals on defense. He has all the tools (except for height) to be an all star but the question is whether he will work on those things.
I’m curious whether you think he will start and if so at the 3 or 4?

I think he will play as a stretch 4 and some but less early on as a power 3. He could post up some 3’s even though he doesn’t do that much as is said by AD23 above. I actually think he could probably play the 3 like 60 percent of the time. He could easily guard one of those 3 and D 3’s and punish them when he is on offense.

Small ball is all the rage and he gives them counter options to play it and defend against it. How many 3’s in the league can penetrate against a half court defense with the ball, like 6, its only about 8 shooting guards, which seems crazy but true. Plus I think the Pacers using West defensively against the weakest offensive player will catch on. Why can’t he just stay in front of Rudy Gay a few feet back and let him jack up long two’s. Can he run through screens or punish the screener is a big deal though.

This was Chris Grant’s take on it, http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2013/06/video_cleveland_cavaliers_gm_c.html,
    http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2013/06/video_cleveland_cavaliers_gm_c.html

Grant said he is a four but can play some 3. He mentioned Bennett could be a great pick and pop with Kyrie and Dion Waiters plus spaces the floor when they drive. The most important thing Grant said was that when he watched Bennett there were things he saw that other guys just can’t do. I really think that’s what led to Waiter’s getting drafted.

    Mike Browns take on it,
    http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/cavs-coach-mike-brown-sees-versatility-in-bennett-anxious-for-competition-with-tristan-thompson-1.409387

For short, he says they will directly compete for minutes, but will play together some also. It was reported Brown, while he didn’t have anything close to final say, he preferred Bennett over Noel and Len. His son was a UNLV recruit and he saw more than a few games in person.

I tend to be of the belief that Bennett will slide into the Speights role, but probably poaching a few of Thompson’s minutes. Karasev would seemingly take Ellington’s spot. Cleveland has a lack of perimeter scoring that needed to be addressed, and I think Karasev should be in a position to find some early success with Kyrie. The Cavs are still too easily guarded because Gee, Waiters, and Thompson can’t shoot, but that is something this draft could not help with. They have invested in who they have. One would hope that the return of Mike Brown returns the club to appreciating the importance of a team-wide commitment to defense, but going from terrible to just bad is not going to be enough.

Thompson isn’t good enough to worry about him. Bennett should play the four and IMO in front of Thompson. His potential is limited offensively and has no right hand.

Also Karasev should help stretch defenses as he is a great shooter and I see him starting maybe at the 3 if he can guard the position by the end of the year.

Cleveland drafted him 4th overall two years ago. I’m not arguing where he is at as a player. He is limited offensively, but he showed improvement and there is no reason to believe they are going to simply give up on him. Bennett, however, is also not so good as to think handing him 30+ minutes is going to serve much purpose. He is small for a 4, slowed down offensively as the year went on, and is going to be challenged defensively. Going first did not make him a more complete player.

The Cavs were terrible defensively and will be again this yr. They need some balance in their starting lineup. As inept as Thompson is offensively, he was the Cavs best defender last yr (since AV was injured for the majority of the yr). I don’t see why he would be removed from the starting lineup.
Bennett can earn his minutes by getting in better shape, learning the nuances of NBA defense and learning how to play with consistent effort. If what the Cavs say is true and the players will compete for minutes from day one, then I think Bennett is behind the 8 ball as far as starting his rookie yr. I can easily see Thompson outworking him for the starting 4 spot.

this might be a good time for a team to trade for waiters, who could be 90% of Harden in a couple years.

The Magic would be well advised to offer Oladipo for Waiters, as would the Cavs to accept.

Chris Grant said on I think it was ESPN Draft Night programme he thought Bennett would be mainly an NBA 4 but would have the ability to play some 3 if required.

If Cleveland decided to draft him first they must have a plan long term for him as I don’t think Coach Brown and Chris Grant would waste a pick at the top of the draft without having considered all options. No mock as far as I know had the Cavs taking Bennett as everyone thought they were after Len or might take Porter to fill the SF role. It seems the Cavs took a compromise pick and the reasons for this I think are :-

    1. The Cavs already have Varejao, Thompson and Zeller in the frontcourt so taking another specialist frontcourter might have been an issue so Bennett gives them the flexability to use him at SF and he fills some of the need there and they may also be willing to let Speights move on so Bennett can immediately take his minutes.

    2. Varejao has a near $10 million team option for 2014-15, so could be a big trade chip which Chris Grant could use with the other first rounders he has accumulated via trades and if he moves Varejao then a lot of front court minutes open up which Bennett will help fill.

    2. Bennett has more versatility than Porter so they can use him at 3 or 4 if needed. There is a loaded draft next year and the Cavs may have one eye on a possible move for Wiggins or Parker and if they take Porter then it could have been an issue fitting him in alongside Wiggins or Parker perhaps.
