chall23ParticipantLooking at the recent stat lines for the Rockets games ive noticed Thomas Robinson isnt getting much playing time at all? I find this pretty weird considering that they gave up their starting PF in Patterson to get him. Does anybody else find this a little weird that they have Greg Smith starting over the #5 pick in the draft? I think out of all the PF on their roster they should at least be splitting time between T-Rob and Motiejunas.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantWe don’t exactly have a set PF starting. It usually changes from week to week from Patterson, Morris to Motiejunas and Greg Smith.
Nobody stands out. The more minutes we give Thomas Robinson, the worse he plays. The more minutes we give D-Mo, the less he cares about rebounding or defense.
We desperately need a power forward that will play well consistently.
At the end of the day, Motiejunas and Robinson are rookies and are not ready to be starting power forwards on a playoff team.

220ParticipantThat’s why its so surprising to gather so many young power forwards. Patrick Patterson was a vet compared to the rest of the rosters power forwards who all played one season or less. Trading Patterson for Thomas Robinson certainly makes some sense for the future, but then the Rockets still have Donatas Motiejunas, Greg Smith, and Terrence Jones. Jones spent nearly the whole year in the d league, but he’s been eating into Robinson, Smith, and Motiejunas’s playing time and producing pretty well.
It would make sense that at some point they’d want to move at least one if not two of the four young power forwards so the others can get the playing time needed to get better.

KHAM83ParticipantThey are in a predicament. T-Rob is in their future plans, and require pt to improve, but they are battling for their playing seed right now. Its best that they put out their best ineup now. T-Rob we believed was one of the most NBA ready prospects this past draft, but it seems as if he has a lot to learn still. At this point in time, Smith gives them a better chance. Some guys need PT to improve, but if T-Rob is the hard worker said of him, he’ll work hard and improve during practice and the off season.

BigChamp12ParticipantThomas Robinson will be a good player, but as of now, he doesnt contribute as much as the other guys contribute when they are out there. T Jones has been very very good lately and will be in the playoff rotation. As of right now, I think their best PF is Greg Smith. His motor and knack for the ball is ahead of the other guys right now. He rebounds at a high rate and also finishes well and is just the safer player to put on the floor, IMO.

TallmanNYCParticipantT-Rob is still not as good as Mojo, Smith or TJones. One can only shudder to think what sort of coaching he was receiving from the Kings staff. Probably the Rockets need to basically detox him and start over from scratch, Morey is obviously high on him since Morey traded three guys who can play and Morey did this in the middle of a historic playoff run. Maybe with some training TRob can become productive. Also, while the Rockets offense is fluid and in some ways easy to play in. Forwards need to be able to shoot jumpers and TRob is not doing that well. There aren’t a lot of set plays called, so if you don’t make the right cuts instinctively, you are going to mess things up. You can’t just rely on memorizing a bunch of plays and doing your part that way. It’s Jazz out there, not Classical music.
One thing I’ve noticed is that he seems a little short out there. I guess he makes up for that with his huge wingspan and athleticism. Is there any possibility TRob could play small forward? I don’t remember any handles in college, but who knows maybe those skills are there.

NJBrown5ParticipantJones has been playing nicely off the bench for the Rockets recently. He’s getting more time due to his style of play and his familiarity with Houston’s system. I agree with those who’ve said TRob is the future of Houston, but right now, I think the coaching staff would like to see how far this current line-up (w/ Greg Smith as the starting four, and a solid rookie rotation of Jones and Montiejunas off the bench) and up-tempo style of play (which Harden prefers) can take them.
Robinson will get his minutes in due time, but they probably won’t start pouring in until Summer League play.

franfranParticipantTerrence Jones is the man!

TallmanNYCParticipantThe problem is that Greg Smith is also the back up center. Now this is no problem when you have blown the other team out by midway through the third quarter and all the starters can rest for the last quarter. But they will need someone other than GSmith to step up and play 20+ minutes per game.

TRC1991ParticipantRobinson, just because he was highly drafted, may not be as talented as Jones, Motiejunas, or even Smith

PabloFiascoParticipantToo many forwards…..we knew this on draft day. They’ve drafted for the same position 3yrs straight with multiple picks in drafts

HitsterParticipantIf Motiejunas can move across and play some C in due course then they can start Greg Smith at PF maybe without having to worry so much about him covering for Asik. If Royce White ever gets himself sorted then that is yet another PF option. I wonder if they will give the PF’s time to develop or if they look to sign a top FA.
They have all these PF assets plus have team options on Garcia and Brooks worth nearly $9 million which would be nice trade pieces. Daryl Morey seems to have got Coach McHale a solid starter at every position bar PF, so that could be the missing link to make them a legit contender lead by Harden.
With the PF’s hopely Kevin McHale can develop one or two of them as he has always been known as a good coach of bigs or could they maybe give someone like Ben Wallace or Mount Mutombo a ring and see if they could work with the young bigs.
